Hi everyone!
Friday update:
I couldn’t get to the gym on Wednesday so I went Thursday instead.

Deadlift: 115-120-125-130-135 1x5 each. < This was actually a mistake. I meant to start at 105 but it went well anyway. I still have a hard time holding the bar at the higher weights but I don’t mind waiting until my grip is stronger.

Overhead press: 1x5 with 20 db, 1x5 45 bb, 2x5 25 db right arm only. < I am noticing that the right arm is seriously weaker than the left, so I am going to do extra sets with dumbells to try to bring it up.

Chinups 1x4, 2x3, 1x1 with 12 lb db, 1x1 with 15 lb db < These were really hard. I guess I was tired because Monday I did these easy as anything.

Bench: 50,55,60,65,70 1x5 each

db Bench: 1x5 30 db right only. < again, my right side is clearly weaker.

I am kind of freaking out about blackbelt. I did kickboxing and class on MW and sparring and class Tu and just sparring yesterday. My son got asked to test for purple belt and I am really proud of him. My sensei strongly encourages us to do full range of motion pushups for our test so I am working on increasing my reps of those. I can do 25 right now. I need to do 100 at the test. I can always fall back on shorter rom pushups if necessary.

I think I’m kind of worn out. I’m glad Sunday is coming soon!

You’ll do great with your blackbelt. I have faith in you!

Thanks Chrysalis! I can’t believe it’s 6 weeks from tomorrow. Whew

Monday Update:

Squat 1x5 90, 95, 100, 105, and 1x2 115 bb. < I was just about to wuss out and not hit last Monday’s 110 PR and then I said ok, fine, then just do one rep of 115 and you can quit… so new PR.

Incline Bench: 1x2 2x3 60 bb < hard

Lunge; 1x5 25-30-35-40 dbs < right quad feeling just fine this week

I also snuck into the gym mid-morning and did a bunch of right arm only pushes and pulls. There’s clearly and imbalance and I hope this will help the right side come up to the left.

I practiced my blocks with counters all weekend. There are 10 blocks and each one is supposed to have a different counter. I’m going with punch, palm strike, eye gouge, elbow, left upper cut, right upper cut, left and right hook punches, fast kick and roundhouse.

Have a great day everyone.

just saying hi…you sound so busy with your training!!

100 pushups? whoah!

I think the most I ever did was 65, waaaay back in bootcamp :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi miM,
Well, the most I have done without stopping is probably 65 too. and then 10 more 10 more, etc, for a total of 90.
Now, he wants full range of motion and this is after the full test.

I would so much rather lift than run. Fortunately it just starting hailing and lightning for the 4th time in 2 days, so i’m off the hook on that one. My boxing drill this morning was very powerful, which I attribute to all this weight training. Happy lifting to all.

Wednesday update:

Lifting this afternoon.

Deadlift 1x5 115, 120, 125 each 1x4 125, 125 bb < Grip giving out. I’m trying to avoid the mixed grip that got me to 147.5 lbs. I’ll tolerate going slower til I get it.

Overhead press 1x5 20, 25 dbs 1x5 30 dbs < I had to slightly assist my right arm to get these up. I guess when I hit 60 lb on the barbell Opress, my left arm was doing most of the work! Lazy right arm bitch.

Bench 1x5 45,55,65,75,75 bb < working back up to max 85 lb. I intend to break through that next week.

Reverse curls 1x5 13 bb 4x5 23 bb < just start these because I have foldy and frog-like forearms to go with scrawny calves. F%#@$'n old age.

Cable kickback 3x5 at 40 lb.

Then I did kickboxing which also included two sets of 50 crunches and about 100 pushups, but not all at once. Lots of bag punching which felt good, but I still don’t pivot enough on my roundhouses, and the lack of power shows it. It affects my sparring, too. We spent all of the next class doing forms and these felt solid and good. He interspersed another 100 or so pushups. I was going to my knees at a few points just to get full rom.

People keep telling me (unsolicited) I look all ripped and buff, but I think about how strong the women are here and I feel like it’s easy to be a big fish out there in the world, but when you come to a powerful women site… well you are a small fish! I’m fine with that, because I want to be better, stronger, and faster. I don’t know if anyone is out there reading this… but I appreciate this site anyway. Happy lifting to you all!

Pivot, pivot, pivot! Protect those knees and get that power. Plus you really need it for a double roundhouse if that second kick is to have anything behind it.

I know what you mean about how strong the women on this site are - truly it’s an inspiration. My deadlift is okay, but my bench and squat suck - lol!

And yes, I’m reading, I’m just a lurker by nature. OMG - that makes me sound like Chester the Molester - well, maybe on the TILF thread!

Happy lifting to you!!

I know I know! I’ve got my pivot on paddles, but it seems like when I try to kick another person I get all choked up. Maybe I need to attack from farther away.

Maybe you could start a journal about your blackbelt journey too. I would lurk around it to pick up tips.

I feel the same way with the small fish thought! You are doing great…good luck on your black belt training.

Hi everyone,
Tuesday update:

Friday I did some higher rep, lower weight stuff:
BB Squat 1x10 at 45,50,55,60,65 lb
DB overhead press 1x10 with 12,15,20 lbs
BB bench 1x5 at 45,55,65,75,80 1x4 at 80 1x5 at 75,65 lb
and 1x5 30 lb db overhead press and a 1x5 set of cable chin with the right arm only

Friday was my son’s purple belt test and he broke the board with a sidekick, first try. I have pix!

Saturday morning two hours of basic forms, stances, traditional blocks and strikes, and some self-defense drills. The sensei and blackbelts were pretty tough on us, asking us to ‘bring more power, you’re going to be blackbelts!’

Sunday I slept 14 hours and didn’t run.

Monday I almost didn’t make it to the gym but I concentrated on squats because tootles shamed me with her progress.
BB Squat: 1x5 90,100,110 and 1x2 120 lb <<<<<< for a new pr!
DB overhead press 1x5 20,25,30 lb
Reverse curl: 1x5 23,29 lb < only the second time trying these. Not sure if I like them or they’re worth it.

And today I succeeded in keeping my feet moving in a semblance of a run(jog) for the whole 2.25 mile ‘blackbelt loop’ without walking at all. Later this week, I will try to shuffle along that sucker twice. I actually did not hate it or want to kill someone this time.

Happy lifting to all.

Good job on your PR!!! (^:

Wow, great day.
I tested two limits and passed them.

Deadlift 1x5 120, 130, 140 and 2x1 150 lbs. This is a new PR at 1.34xbw! And, it felt great. I probably could have done it a few more times.
Weighted Chinups 2x3 bw+15 lbs
Overhead db press 1x5 20, 25 lbs
Reverse Curls 2x5 29 lb
Bench 1x5 45, 55, 65, 75 1x4 85 and 1x1 90. This is also a new PR. I tried to do it twice and failed. I actually asked a guy to spot me so that was fine. Usually I tip off the weights if I can’t raise it.

Sparring and class last night, kickboxing and class tonight. I am starting to feel like chewing on nails and drinking raw eggs.

Over and out!

Wow, what a deadlift PR! That is so awesome.

Thanks Kimba. I really enjoy deadlifting. I’m so happy to see your log and look forward to following along.
I like that you have measurable and specific goals. As soon as I finish blackbelt I am going to set some lifting goals too.
Have a great day!

I feel the same way too. I feel really strong and then I look at the results for the world games in Taiwan. Then I feel like a weak cookie. However, it makes me realise the limits are much farther and I can do so much more.

Monday update:

I finally got a coworker woman into the freeweight area of the gym. I started her on stronglifts 5x5. She did great! She’s lost about 30 lbs by dieting and running and looks good, but was complaining about flappy triceps and thighs. “Come on over to the other side of the gym,” I said in a sinister voice. And she did.

Overhead db press 1x5 12, 15, 20, 25 lbs bb press 1x5 45, 50, 55 lbs then I tried for 65 which would have been a new PR and… failed. So I pushed up 62.5 lb 2x1. I guess that’s a PR but I was a little disappointed the 65 wouldn’t go.

BB reverse curl: 5x5 29 lb.

BB squat: 1x5 55,65,75,85,96 and 1x1 at 125 lb. < Also a PR, and solely due to this community. I would not have tried to push heavier so quickly 3 months ago. Shoutouts to kimba and tootles!

DB decline bench 1x5 12,15,20 < just trying these out for well-roundedness.

DB lunges 1x5 25,30,35,40 lbs.

Happy lifting!

125! That is so awesome, especially ballsy given the jump from 95. I’m more one to sneak up on a PR five pounds at a time. Good on you for pushing yourself! Now, I know what might have to be done in my next workout.

Keep on with your bad self luring those women over to the dark side…

Kimba, I’ll be right next to you!

Tuesday update:
Great kickboxing and class yesterday. During kickboxing I focussed on hard, extended backkicks. One of my 10 board breaks for testing is going to be backkicks and it is not my strongest.
I’m getting the right leg to consistently kick head-high on roundhouses. Left leg has been there for a while. Class was breaking holds. I had practiced these all day Sunday with a friend and I am working on getting in a low solid stance every single time. We tried pulling each other off balance and yanking out of poorly done arm and wrist locks which was great practice.

I am totally annoyed that there’s a holiday this weekend. No classes Saturday OR Monday. I think it’s really inconsiderate of the rest of the country not to be focussed on my need to prepare for blackbelt. Bastards.

Got good sleep last night.

Tonight, I’m going to run over to the dojang and around the blackbelt loop before sparring at 6. That’s about 4.5 miles, and should be a good endurance test followed by sparring and class.

Good day to all.
