If we cant quote the work of other men, then how are we supposed to support our arguements? There arent too many of us that do university studies on a regular basis. Can you do max effort and speed work on the same day? Sure. Is it optimal? Probably not. THere is no way i could do justice to a dynamic squat workout by doing a max set of good mornings before hand. That would be stupid. OGuard is much stronger than me. Louie Simmons has trained girls that are stronger than me. I will defer to them. Especially when what they say has worked so well for me in the past. Its not that i dont like thinking outside of the box. Quite the contrary. Ive come up with quite a good bit of crazy stuff in my training. But i dont see any need in reinventing the wheel. Theres too much speculation on the web.
OGuard and Goldberg, I certainly don’t mean to be taking an offensive stance towards you, and I don’t believe in just questioning things for the sake of it.
Variation is, however, the essence of your training, as I’m sure you’ve found.
Whilst Simmons et al have compiled a long list of training successes, much of their ideals and successes were stemmed from simple trial and error, both hypothesising and testing. This will apply now and tomorrow.
For us to get better we must always be doing things differently, just as surely as in 100 years training will be completely different to how it is today.
not a god idea…big martin
In regards of what should be done 1st etc… perhaps it would be better to specify the exact goal one is training for.
Obviously going for a powerlifting meet heeds demands different than someone looking to up poundages but still train for a sport other than powerlifting.
Having said that, I am not a powerlifter yet I do incorporate it, and have found that alternating heavy & explosive movements work best for me - but I’m also concerned with performance in sports other than powerlifting.
kuri you make a lot of very very good points…and i agree with you 100% using heavy movements and explosive movements combined in the same workouts is a good idea…but combining the systems of max eff and dyanmic exactly from the westside system in one work out is not a good idea…big martin
OK guys i think thats where i posted wrong as Dynamic and Max effort work, i didn’t necissarily mean as westside does it. I mean maybe doing heavy work like 5 sets of 3, then doing and dynamic effort exercises. So if i put it this way, which is the way i ment in the first place would this be a good idea??? Sory guys couldn’t word it exactly as i ment it.
It’s a good idea ![]()
Binford -
here is an example, yerday was a mild deloading workout for me
i did the follwing for my 14inch grip bench
Warmups - 14inch grip Bar - 3 static holds for 6 secs each on the way down then x8
Pushups on bench - 3 static holds for 6secs each on the way down then x5,
95x5, 135lbs x3, x2
Tempo - 10X0 - alternating sets with rows 1.5 to 2.5 mins rest between each
185lbs - 3 sec lockout hold then x 3
230lbs x2
235lbs x2 - bent bar flipped in my hands as I unracked it and it stuffed up my groove and I lowered the bar too high on the chest and wasted much energy getting it up, 2nd rep was slow!
230lbs x2 - smooth
Tempo X0X0
Plyo Triple Cluster set - 4 triples - reversed an inch above the chest
145lbs - 3 reps, rerack/rest 10seconds, 3 reps, rerack/rest 10seconds, 3 reps, rerack/rest 10seconds, 3 reps
