Southern California Wildfire Pics

Based on news reports here in Europe i get a feeling that the california wildfire gets worse every year. Is that an accurate picture, or do the only report more about it?

Damn, nature really has to take a hit with such a big fire. And i can’t imagine how awfull it is to see a fire getting closer to your house every hour …

Hey Maximus, or anyone else who has any input, these pictures got me thinking…have the wildfires gotten a lot more frequent over the last few years? Or maybe they are just being reported more? Or maybe I am just paying more attention.

It just seems like every summer, for quite awhile now, half of southern California is on fire.

This summer on the Northern Rockies /Great Plains it has been very quiet so far. It has been a very cold summer in fact. However until we get some significant snow we could still get something. The two biggest fires on the district I work on both occurred in late Sept. early Oct.

I think that they are either more frequent or consistent, but the severity has gotten worse. It seems like each year, the fires get worse and become harder to fight, with more acreage being burned. But we do have fires every year, that much has been consistent. The problem is that people get lazy and do not clear the dry brush that surrounds their homes, and then some idiot will toss his cigarette out the window driving and the whole hillside goes up in flames. Usually this seems to be the case. We also have these Santa Ana winds, which is hot air and “fans the flames” making it worse. On top of all that, the cool ocean breeze is blocked by the Santa Monica Mountains and never seems to make it here. It’s funny, you could drive a 10 mile distance, and the temperature change will be about 15 degrees. If you go over the Santa Monica Mountains, it gets much hotter or cooler.

7 miles away too close? back in the '03 fires, or was it '06? I can’t remember, but one of them was literally 100 feet out my back door. When they finally let us back into the neighborhood, we went to our house and there was nothing but scorched earth once you got 100 feet out. it came right up to a big old oak tree and, stopped right under it. Good thing it didn’t go up.[/quote]

100 feet too close? My house burned down in a wildfire two years ago, so it’s all relative.
