Couple of points to add:
If you want the console for watching movies more so than gaming, i back the PS3 100%. 360 doesn’t upscale, and you can really see the difference, even on tv’s as ‘small’ as 32". Not to mention the difference between BD [Blu-ray Disc] and DVD is like night and day.

I believe the Xbox Elite does upscale.
I’m pretty sure it does, too. I use the HDMI connection with my Elite, but I never using it for watching movies, so I really couldn’t say how the upscaling compares to the PS3 or my HD-DVD player.
I also prefer the 360 controller. The larger size just feels better in my hands.
On another note Bioshock is coming out on the PS3. It doesn’t seem like there are many true exclusive titles these days.

I prefer the 360 controller too, gotta love those triggers.
The biggest determinate for me was the games. Mass Effect, Gears of War, etc. the Xbox just had more exclusives that I wanted at the time. But all things considered the PS3 comes with built in wireless and a bigger hard drive so it’s probably the better deal dollar-to-dollar.
I want a PS3 but the only reason I’d buy one now is for MGS4. Good Lord how bad I want that game…
Side question, with the PS3, can you can you use it as a media player, or copy movies/music to it? Does it have a stream feature like the 360?
You can access media files from a Media Server with it. You have to enable it through Windows Media Player first and make sure you have all of your files in a shared folder.

Or just download and use TVersity…works mighty well for me.
I think the 360 is a true Gaming system at heart, It actually COMES with HDMI cables, The XBOX live marketplace is very user friendly and has some great throw back games. I was just playing Street Figher II hyper fighting edition, and Rez HD, the other day. They just uploaded Soul Calibur for download on the Live Market place. I am just waiting for them to wake up and put Marvel vs Capcom 2 on there and I will be set.
Playstation has always been my first love but they dropped the ball when they tried to ass rape us for 600 bucks to buy a PS3. I will eventually get one maybe around the time God of War III comes out. Till Then I am very happy with my 360.
On a side note: I got the red rings of death last week and I am in gaming limbo till my 360 is returned. That part sucks major balls. Buy the add on fan for the system, it will save you 3 weeks of agony.
Xbox Live is ridiculously better than PS3 online play. Also Xbox Live is going to feature Netflix in the near future so you won’t have to ever go out and get a dvd again you can just watch it from XBL.

Sooo True!
We have:
a Wii,a PS3 (mine), a X360Elite (sons).
PS3 is far quieter than X360E.
PS3 system downloads are fairly regular. I have the UK 60gb model, it has 4 usb ports, slots for memory cards etc.
it plays PS2 & some PS1 games too.
The upscaling std DVDs & Blu ray was a consideration when I bought the PS3. Blu ray is great with a 1080p HD LCD. The newer DVDs get upscaled to high quality too, though the difference between upscaled DVD and Blu Ray isn’t as big as I thought, so I am quite happy to still buy std DVDs. If its a favourite I might shell out a bit more for the Blu Ray version, I have a few Blu Rays but mainly std DVDs.
PS3 bames are beggining to get better (I guess as the developers get to grips with the PS3 system) same thing happened with the PS2.
You DO need an HDMI cable with the PS3 to get the full benifit of blu-ray definition (not a big deal, just don’t buy it from best buy), and of course a TV that supports such high resolution.
What is an HDMI cable and why shouldn’t I buy one from Best Buy?
HDMI provides the best available picture. It will cost $30 and up from bestbuy. Don’t fall for the monster cable ploy, $100 cables won’t make a difference.

I’ve never heard of that … I will check it out though.
Also, anyone here have Linux running on their PS3? My laptop ate it and I was thinking about this as an alternative to get me by until I can afford another one.
PS3 is one of the top Blu-ray players on the market, and it doesn’t cost much more than a stand-alone Blu-ray player. So if you’re interested in BR at all, it is a no-brainer.
The PS3 uses a standard laptop size hard drive, so you can buy a big, cheap one off Newegg and upgrade your PS3 WITHOUT voiding your warranty. The Xbox can only be upgraded with proprietary, overpriced Microsoft hard drives.
The PS3 has built-in wireless, whereas adding wireless to the Xbox will set you back another $60-100.
Xbox Live is better than the PS Network. However, Xbox Live is $50/year, PSN is free.
Xbox does have more games, but it has been out a year longer. The PS3 has a bunch of good games coming out now, and most of the really big games are on both platforms anyway.
In summary, both are great consoles for playing games. I like the PS3 because of its better hardware reliability, and because I think it has more momentum and technological upside going forward into the future.
