Snapper's Strength Sojourn

word! 10 bucks is awesome! …i’m kinda digging that separate room thing. I prefer doing my stuff alone

Not heavy like me, T? Have you looked at my weights lately? I’m super light. Tomorrow will be painful, however, since I have to do nine reps at about bodyweight. I’m so not a high-rep girl. So high reps at any weight just about kill me.

Regarding the women’s-only lifting area . . . I think whatever works for people. Some women are too intimidated to lift around men, especially if they are beginners. To be honest, since I noticed the women’s area didn’t have a cage, I didn’t investigate it closely. I’ll check it out tomorrow. Plus, I often train with my coach. I teased him that he’d have to yell the commands to me from the door if we start training there.

It’s not quite $10 since there are some hidden fees. $29.99 one-time joining fee plus $25 annual facility improvement fee. Still, it works out to $164.95 per year. Funny but I probably won’t give up my 24 Hour membership if I join this place just because I only pay $13/month there. I’m a big believer in having options in life.

Hey to a fellow Coloradan! Where is this gym? I’m a basement gym person but always on the lookout for options.

George

I wouldn’t have a problem with the womens only training area if there was decent stuff in there encouraging women to lift some WEIGHT!

Theres a few treadmills, a stair stepper a lat pulldown machine, the ad/abductor machines, and db’s up to 15lbs. Its like encouraging women to be stuck in the stereotype.

Women’s gym my arse. Sounds like segregation to me!
My gym has different rooms, though all are open to everyone. The main gym has a lot of crap machines, the spinning bikes, stretching mats and a lot of dumbells. Next to that are all the treadmills, stair machines and bikes, and then above that bit there are more cardio machines, a few more weight machines and some fixed barbells.
Then, off to the side there is a small, dank room with inefficient aircon, where the oly bars, power rack, bench and smith machine are located, plus a few machines like the leg press and plate loaded leg extension and curl, and so forth. I mostly train in there, and rarely see other women. There are one or two others who are a bit more serious but most stick to the machines and cardio stuff. Bit sad, really.

Trial training session at the new gym today.

Week 2, Day 1 Smolov

Squat
10/45
8/75
5/95
4/9/108 (just a titch under bodyweight for me)

Good Mornings
10/45
10/65
3/6/85

Standing Calf Raise
3/8/270

I really enjoyed training in this gym. The music is loud (which I like), and the guys in the weightroom were very friendly. The female-only training area is actually quite nice. DBs go up to 35 lb. Two flat bench stations. Lots of machines and cardio equipment. But no cage or squat rack. I’ll try to post some videos of my squat and good mornings for feedback.

Last set of squats. A bit less than bodyweight. Very slow unracking because of my shoulder.

Your gym looks so nice and big and open! Also, your squat depth looks great, but I have never doubted thee.

And the good mornings at 85 lb. I really like these but welcome any critiques on form.

Snapper, the new gym looks great (I like loud music too, btw)!

Your squats look really good, I’m so jealous of how easily you drop into the hole!

I’m no good morning expert (I only recently started doing them myself), but I wonder if maybe you’re losing a bit too much of your lower back arch at the bottom of the movement? What do the rest of you ladies think?

Glad to hear you’re liking Smolov so far. How’s the shoulder feeling? It looks like you’re being real careful with it in the vids.

P.S. Nice legs/glutes - lookin’ hawt.

I’d take your squats as my own in an instant. As for the GMs, I’ve got nothing for you. I probably do them quite similarly to you.

Its great that you can squat just fine after so carefully getting under the bar. I did sort of wince at that.

Yep. Feedback is good. And since I’m not all that confident about my form on good mornings . . . Chime in, anyone?

Hello Soldog. Thanks for stopping in. I saw you lift in December but didn’t see you at the meet last month. Refs scare you off? The gym I’m referring to and where the recent videos were shot is Better Bodies on Jewell and Wadsworth.

Tomorrow is the day of reckoning regarding my shoulder. I’m considering making a deal with the devil.

Your squats look great. On your good mornings, I’d tighten your back a bit so there’s no rounding. They look kind of funny. Not bad. Something about how the weight balances your body almost looks like you’re defying gravity with the lean back and the weight forward. Kind of matrix looking. Keep doing them if you can. I do them once a week and it’s thickened my lower back considerably.

I had the same thought when I saw my good morning vid, O. Looks like a magician’s trick. Very odd. I also agree that my back rounds some, RBlue, and I lose the tightness. As I’ve said before, vids are such a great training tool because you can actually see what you’re doing (good and bad). Some of my squats look tres deep, for instance. Way deeper than I feel like I’m going.

Dang - you did see me? say Hi the next time.

Jan-March was a bad few months for me so that meet just wasn’t happening.

Jewell & Wadsworth eh? I may have to check that out after I move down out of the mountains.

Good luck with the shoulder!

I live “in the mountains” too, Soldog. Where are you? I drive a ways to get to a gym.

I’m up top of Conifer Mountain about 9700 ft. Been up there since 1989.

The distance is why I built up my home set-up off of Craig’s list and Play-it-Again Sports.

At some point I should consider this. Squatting once per week isn’t resulting in huge improvement.[/quote]

Quik hijack - kimba, have you thought of adding a back squat to your DL day, a bit like what I do?

On Dl day I do back squats prior to my DL - the logic is it will help keep my squat up as well as prep me for the DL. This was trainer Steve’s recommendation, and honestly it doesn’t affect my DL at all. Might be something to think about?

Snap - I gotta switch to a different browser to see the vids, be back i a few!

Squats before deads? I’ll think on that one.

Snap, how is the Day of Reckoning going?

When I was training each lift just one day a week, I used to do sets of box squats after my DLs. Just to get more squats in. From my experience, if I’m squatting frequently, I can maintain my DL numbers even if I’m not specifically training that lift. The same is not true for me in reverse, though. When I say box squats, I would fully sit at the bottom and have a nice little rest there before engaging the muscles again to push the weight up.

The Day of Reckoning begins at 1 pm.
