Snap Back

If you aren’t supposed to lift over bodyweight, there is one way around this. Eat up, put on a few lbs. and lift a little more. That’s not cheating, just creative problem solving.

I find myself rather jealous of your power rack and your depth. Says the chronic depth-cheater.

Thanks to all for watching my vid and commenting.

Kimba: I like your way of thinking re: eating up. But you should know I don’t have any problems with putting away my share of calories. I wouldn’t lift at a gym without a rack. It’s the most important piece of equipment in my mind.

Punnyguy: Amazingly, my depth doesn’t lessen with increased weight. I think my hips are too flexible. This is just a theory I’m working on, but I think this is why I suck at sumo pulls. I get no pop out of the bottom because my hips are too loose. The vid I posted was of corrected depth. In other words, my first few sets were truly ass to grass.

O: Interesting that you mention the ankle roll. That’s new and I think it’s a result of stalling under the bar because the liftoff hurts my shoulder. I tend to do weird things like that when training raw. Once I’m in gear, that kind of nonsense stops. Here’s your link to the static vs. dynamic stretching article: http://www.powerliftingwatch.com/node/16294.

Hel: I’ve played with the grip in squat. And you’re right. It’s easier on my shoulder the wider it is. But I feel terribly unstable with a wide grip.

Oldman Powers: I’d love to push the intensity. I’m just trying to be a good girl and do what the doctor orders for a few more weeks.

your work ethic is awesome keep p with the great attitiude

^^^Yeah what he said

Great attitude, huh? I recently insulted Glenn Pendlay. Leave it to me to do that. For the record, I did apologize. Sometimes being sassy works to one’s advantage. And sometimes it doesn’t.

I do love the doggie pic, Bulldog.

I didn’t see anything to apologize for… you were right he should have read the first page of Alisa’s log.

You are wrong, cause I did read it, just didnt interpret it correctly. But me being an idiot doesnt mean she should apologize, so, in the end, we can agree, i was wrong, and she did nothing to apologize for.

But, rest assured, i have tried to make ammends as best I could over PM. I hope she forgives me.

Saaaay, Kimba right, that is a nice rack. Good depth too.

Actually, I made that comment about sassiness and offending Glenn in jest. But my humor was lost. Because I’m not funny. Except to myself, in which case I’m wildly amusing.

Yep. It is a nice cage. But my gym has those infernal multi-sided plates, which I loathe for DLing. So I’ll be getting a supplemental membership to a gym solely for its round weights. Starting Friday.

You know, I bet you are funny but humor can be hard to get accross when you can’t hear inflection or see mannerisms.

Hello SNAP.

re: mutli-sided vs. round…not sure of this applies in your case but there was a gym in town that had both and the round were ever so slightly bigger in diameter. So, if you had a single round 45 on the bar it made the awkwardness of the multi’s go away.

I’m not sure if this size difference is consistent though. So there would be measuring involved. Perhaps there is a possibility of buying and storing two round 45s at the gym? Would save a second membership

Interesting idea, Giterdone, regarding buying my own 45s. The gym I’m looking at is only $10/month. It’s a dive. But it has round plates and a big lifting area. Also a “women’s only” lifting area that I won’t frequent because it doesn’t have a cage.

Anyways, today’s training consisted of:

2 minute warmup on the hand bike

Lying “L” External Rotation
3/10/3

Flat Bench BB Press
8/25

Pain caused me to stop this. Shooting pain in the long head of the biceps tendon again. And it’s just a 25-lb. bar. I’m trying to not panic here and focus instead on strengthening all the surrounding muscles.

DB Press
3/10/8

A) Lying DB Rear Delt
3/10/3

B) Lying Kroc Row
3/10/8

A) Standing Bicep Curls
3/10/12.5

B) Triceps Overhead DB Extension (Scary)
3/10/5

A) DB 45 degree Raise
3/8/3

B) DB Lateral Raise
3/8/3

Seated Row
3/10/50

So I have really only trained with the multisided plates and of course I deadlift with them too. Why do you despise them so much?

When the plates rotate and shift as you lift, they aren’t flat when you set it down, it always jerks me a little forward/back etc. Also, I like being able to roll the bar a little, particularly when training in equipment.

I’ll try to tackle your question, UN42, in more depth.

If I’m pulling singles, the shape of the plates is wholly irrelevant. But when pulling for reps, it’s a different story.

Having the ability to make micro-tweaks with a little roll on one side or the other is huge for me. When I DL, I truly do a “controlled drop” on the way down. My hands stay in contact with the bar, because that’s required on the platform, but I’m guiding it down, not holding the weight. When the bar contacts the floor, it bounces some, as a result, and often is no longer in as close of contact with my shin(s) as I’d prefer. I do not do touch and go between reps because I think the momentum of doing that cheats the lifter out of the strength that is built by pulling dead from the floor. But I don’t like to set up between reps for more than a second or so.

I once read some statistic that said something to the effect that for every inch away from the body the bar is when DLing, it adds 10 lb. For me, that’s 9% of my bodyweight, which is significant. Could be a total bullshit piece of math, but you can’t argue with the fact that the bar is harder to pull the farther away from the body it is.

For big guys that pull lots of plates, I’ve read you can align multi-sided plates all differently to avoid the shifting problem. But two plates is already more than twice my bodyweight. So that’s not an option for me.

There’s my answer.

I have never understood the multisided plates. I can think of no advantages, and several disadvantages.

Yes snap you are right, they dont roll, I have just always adjusted my body to the bar. I understand your frustration. Maybe they will round plates in Afghanistan for me.

hey snap! I have to give you credit for the deadlifitng with round vs sided plate break thru. I had no clue that it could effect things until i learned that from you and tried it myself.

when i started the round plates i had a massive increase in reps and wt PR’s. I can’t say that one day i just suddenly got better at deadlifting, i can say one day i changed plates and that was an instantly gratifying change. but now i don’t have em anymore :frowning:

oh! and great vids!!
