Sinister (Movie)

To any horror fans here on T-Nation, check out this trailer

Looks creepy as all hell and initial reviews have been very positive. Same producer as Insidious.

Incidentally, to anyone who thinks the horror genre is dead, I’d highly recommend Insidious. A genuinely unsettling movie with a very unique take on an old horror premise.

Any other horror films to recommend which may have passed under my radar??

Sinister… looks pretty good, but I’m weary of the same devises used in countless other films. Hopefully the film is way scarier than the trailer.

I did see Insidious and thoroughly enjoyed it… except for the way the demon looked - a bit too “clowny” to be truly terrifying.

Agreed. He looked like the offspring of when Darth Maul anally raped a Cirque du Soleil performer.

The old woman in Insidious scared the crap out of me. Read some of the plot interpretations that people have written when you get a chance.

Paranormal Activity? Why would anyone claim to have anything to do with that piece of shit?

Sinister doesn’t look too bad though.

x2… I don’t get my hopes up fro any horrors any more, but every now and then (few years) something comes along to tide me over.

There’s a new film called “VHS.” I thought it was extremely well done. I’m critical of horror movies, too. Cabin in the Woods was also pretty good, though not especially scary.

The catch-22 of being a horror fan is that you end up hating 99 percent of the genre. I have to give credit where it’s due as far as Paranormal Activity is concerned. You can’t watch it without jumping the first time through, and it does a wonderful job of working with the Freudian ‘return of the suppressed’ theme on which all horror is based.

PA was shit on all levels, only 5 secs of the movie was remotely good (dragging the lady down the hall). Every other aspect of that movie should never have been made, nor people hyping it. f-in tards

In think its in the 2nd one that the woman is sitting at the kitchen counter and all the cabinets swing open. That scene scared the shit out of me. Very unexpected. But overall, it didnt do much for me.

I liked all the Paranormal flicks… especially the last one. Fuckin’ evil grandma.

Anyone who has ever grown up in an old house and has had paranormal experiences can relate on an almost primal level.

Otherwise, your judgement is based on your previous FILM experiences.

Tru dat about hating 99% of the genre. When most people talk to me about horror they assume I hate it because of how critical I am of it. I actually really enjoy horror movies, it’s just that so few of them are actually enjoyable.

Paranormal Activity did nothing but make people jump, and that does not a good horror movie make in my opinion. Those silly demon memes make people jump.

Sinister looks like it’s worth checking out. I didn’t see Insidious, but based on the trailer, I don’t want to see it. That looks like a shit pile and after the comments about the demon thing, I don’t seem to be missing too much.

Give it a chance. I bet you’ll like it.

Insidious was very good. I’ve never showed it to a person who appreciates horror and heard negative reviews about it.

I’m excited for this Sinister movie to say the least, as a huge horror buff. Off the top of my head, underrated and overlooked horror movies:

  • Cabin in the Woods - (Can’t stress enough. Not “truly” scary but it’s Weeden’s ultimate “love letter / fuck you” to the horror genre. Extremely well-done and refreshingly original.)

  • House of the Devil - (Is on Netflix Instant. If one is not a true horror fan, this movie probably isn’t worth much. It has an extremely slow and long build-up, but has old-school film elements that Hitchock would be plenty proud of. Very underrated.)

  • Martyrs / Irreversible - (Not horror in a traditional sense, especially Irreversible, but these are thoughtful and provocative movies that accomplish excellence through sheer brutality. Unfortunately, many people will be turned off by the violence and won’t understand what these movies are trying to achieve. Irreversible should be Netflix Instant)

  • Dead Girl - (Also not a typical horror movie, but has a very eery and ominous feel to it, and is pretty damn disturbing. Also Netflix Instant.)

There’s other movies on my Instant Queue that I have yet to get to, which I’ve heard promising things about, Including “Antibodies” and “Grave Encounters” but I cannot personally vouch for either of these. There’s more than that but I’m blanking atm.

Insidious was decent compared to most crap modern horror movies. I think I’ll go check out Sinister. Honestly, I am a huge horror fan, but today’s horror films are just not being produced like they used to. The last modern horror film that got me was ‘The Ring’…not only was I never bored, but it had me anxious throughout its entirety.

Insidious was great until Cirque du Soleil showed up. They had the atmosphere perfect up to that point…then it was all laughs.

Cabin In The Woods was NOT horror at all. I liked it but think he would have only really won me over if he would have cast a black guy as the pot head. To date, minorities still don’t make it out of scary movies alive.

Even Asians get decapitated.

“Cirque du Soleil”…lol, yeah that kinda threw it off a bit
