I think a common theme in religion, at least in the West, is an underlying resentment toward God or the gods. It comes from the realization that nature/the universe is indifferent to the human experience, perhaps even hostile to it, and the gods, if they care to intervene, base it on how they feel at the moment.

I’ll buy that.

The first thing a lot of atheists point to as a proof that there is no god, or if there is it doesn’t care, are the atrocities commited by men.

I have my own little batch of resentments in that regard.

That’s the conundrum; why do we need to live our lives as if He cares when the reality is, He doesn’t? Or, He does care but won’t do anything? If the answer to every prayer is no, what’s the point?

Its a matter of free will to me, and maybe an attribution fallacy of sorts.

I look at acts of man as acts of man, but when something beyond our capabilities takes place, its an act of God.

My buddy took a fifty foot fall cutting trees. Got completely destroyed. Doctors did everything they could, but he was still a potato. Prognosis- deep coma until organ failure, or pull the plug. Its just a matter of time.

Then he woke up after a couple of months. Had a long way to go, but there he was.
Years later, I’m waiting now for him to come over and pick me up. We have stuff to do today.

:man_shrugging:t2:. What do you call that?

It’s a way to give us a sense of relevance in a huge universe. We’d rather blame God than indifference and chance because any attention is better than none. We’re like battered wives in that regard.

How do those that don’t believe in God…blame God

We don’t.

Thats where its important to differentiate between disagree and disbelief.

I think some would prefer to believe in God in order to have someone to blame. The other option is, to not believe in God at all, which brings with it the idea that all of this is for nothing.

I found this today, straight out of the Smith College gender studies department. It is particularly well-written ideobabble, but ideobabble nevertheless.

Gender studies and Smith College is redundant.

There isn’t enough beer in the world to drink to be able to listen to that blabber until she gets anxious and takes her clothes off.

It’s Smith College so the odds are she’s a lesbian or queer or something. Northampton, MA has the largest number of lesbian couples in the country.

I’ve encountered some that do

I’ll turn them straight.

Or…

Sidenote: I love the reaction videos to this tune.

Her daughter found a video on her phone doing God knows what… but it’s on Casenet

Some say religion is used as a tool to control others.

The same can be said of government.
