What? Silva said he’d fight Fedor.
Bad choice of words on my part. In the interview I watched on Sherdog he said he’d fight him but that it was realistically not a good matchup. Something like-“But come on, this is Fedor we’re talking about.”
I should also rephrase in that I’m sure GSP wants to fight Anderson. I just don’t think he thinks he’ll be competitive, hence it not being at the top of his list of priorities.
BJ was talking about it awhile back, he probably could have done it too if he would have trained seriously. I remember he said his diet for the GSP1 fight was a milkshake and burrito a day.
HA awesome! BJ dominated GSP in the first round before GSP came back to win a split decision. If BJ would have trained half-way serious he would have won that fight.
Yeah Anderson fought WW in the early part of his career (was Shooto MW champ at 167) so I think he can do it. If his goal is to fight GSP though, I think a catch weight (177) would be best.
Regardless, I like the way Anderson likes to challenge himself: two LHW fights, wants to fight Frank Mir, wants to cut to WW and fight GSP. Can’t fault the man for that.
I think Silvas frame has naturally filled out through maturation [and obviously training and eating], so I’m not sure how he’d feel/perform at 170. GSP talks all the time about being the best, so why does Silva have to drop? Why can’t he move up to 185, or a catch 180? Pretty sure he walks around at 190+, so I don’t see the problem. As dominant as GSP is at 170, I don’t think he wants any part of Silva, regardless of weight class. Too big, too fast, too much power and accuracy. It’s just a bad fight all around for GSP.

Here is a weird thing to think about, BJ beats GSP and then Hughes and is once again WW champ. What would have happened to GSP or Hughes. Would the GSP we know today even exist would he even have started to train with Firas, Jackson or Chaimberg? Weird how things work out.

add to that a superior reach, an advantage on the feet, and a very good defensive game off his back.
Currently, GSP will be at a strength deficit. As well as he stifled Alves, he couldn’t stop him from muscling his way into small gaps in his top control and standing up. At MW, Silva will be a few lbs larger than Thiago, and probably stronger.
Another factor to consider is the reach adv., something that many of GSP’s opponents did not have. Silva’s accuracy, power and length could potentially stave off that God-like double leg.
IMO, the result of this matchup would come down to whether or not GSP can close that distance on a semi consistent basis. If so, the win will likely go to him, albeit a grinding, unanimous dec. that many will call LnP. If he can’t, and ends up fighting Anderson toe to toe or in the clinch, he’s in trouble.
It’s not going to happen right now that’s for sure. Silva pretty much ruined the Maia fight. I thought it was pretty kickass for the first two rounds, but in the third he stopped showboating and flat out stopped fighting.
As it stands, there will be concerns that if he ever fights Georges, and does in fact outclass him (you never know given his skill-set) he’ll do the same thing to him as he did Demian and make him look bad. Shame, but there are more interesting prospects for him LHW.
Pretty obvious he needs to be challenged. Who would he fight in his first fight at 170? Alves? Not sure I’d want to see him against anyone but Alves and GSP. I think there are probably more interesting match-ups at 205. Rashad, Rampage, Shogun, Machida. Couple of those and few more wins for Jones would make a great build-up to fight between two incredible athletes. We don’t need someone that can beat Silva. We just need fights that are competitive enough he won’t be able to clown around.
What about HW? There are a ton of strikers he could face up there as a warm-up fight. I doubt he’s much smaller than Barry or Yvel. These guys are nowhere near the top of the division and there is no way Silva could clown with them. Give him one of the top contenders that loses after that. Carwin, Cain, Dos Santos. He’d eventually get killed at HW. I wouldn’t mind seeing that after his last few fights.
They probably have to keep in the 185 division as champion or risk losing him. It seems to me like he wants out and as soon as his belt is gone, no more champion’s clause. Him leaving the division would pretty much kill the division as well. No matter who was champion, people would probably just assume they would have gotten killed by Silva and lose interest. Probably guarantee no headline fights at 185.
I really hope it happens. Its an interesting fight to think about. Mir could cut to 230 given his size and how much of it is muscle. He would probably rule in the clinch and on the ground my sheer size and strength, though with his previous performance, testing Silva’s power in the clinch would be foolish.
On the feet, Mir is fucked IMO. He lacks the striking skill and reach to fuck with those tentacles Silva calls arms. He needs to back Silva up and bully him against the cage and on the ground where he has the upper hand, a difficult proposition.
Bad matchup for Mir, but he can pull it off, and if he does, pure sweetness.
yeah, Mir vs Silva would be bad for Mir…he got schooled by Vera, who is really a easier version of Silva…
Mir’s key would be to box (like with head movement, footwork, etc) and wrestling…his punching is improved, but he still can’t take a hit. if silva wanted to improve his image, this would be a matchup to take, IMO…
