Shoveling Snow Can Kill You

Did the above study use BMI as their obesity scale? I hope not because BMI is a joke. At 5’9" I’d have to weigh 168lbs or less to be “normal”. 169lbs and I’m overweight. At 205 I’m obese.

I completely agree that on a case by case basis, for a muscular person, BMI is a piss poor indicator. I am overweight at 6’4", 225lbs. The average NFL runningback is obese, if not morbidly obese.

For the overwhelming majority of the population, I would say that it actually holds true, for the most part. Most people who are 5’9" and 205 are not built like you or an NFL runningback. They are built more an “obese” person. I don’t think there has been a big global spike in muscularity.

I definitely agree that a more comprehensive index would be better, but for overall trends/risk factors etc. working with large groups of people, BMI’s generally not so bad.

Ya, begrudgingly, I suppose so. It just seems too generic to me. I know the activity level in America is a joke, but I still find it hard to believe the majority of people are at a level where BMI is an accurate measure for them.

Maybe I’m in denial.

BMI is meant to be used for a generalized, population group, not individuals.

This works because most people don’t lift and have a lot of lean mass.

That being said, most people who get pissed off about the inaccuracies of BMI shouldn’t, because chances are they don’t possess a fraction of the strength level or lean mass you do.

I recently read that almost 30% of the WORLD population (or 2.1 billion people) are overweight or obese as of this year. The developing world is jumping on that train in a big way. As I recall the estimate based on current trends was that 50% of the world would be overweight or obese by 2030.

Was that the same report of obesity costing over $2 trillion globally? What a stupid problem to have.

Here’s another nugget of gold:

Obesity research confirms long-term weight loss almost impossible

Yep, that’s the one. For the first time in human history too much food has become a bigger problem than not enough. Crazy.

But… But… I always here people crying about “overpopulation” and the “world will end”…

While I sincerely appreciate the compliment it’s still hard for me to fathom the majority of people have such little lean mass that BMI is even remotely accurate. I’m not saying it isn’t true just that it’s hard for me to wrap my brain around.
