Should You Tip......

What I don’t like is that now there is a tip line on the receipt at any counter food service. So if I come in, order off a wall menu, tell a line cook what I want in my burrito (Moe’s as example), have to fill my own drink, etc- you still want me to tip you?

I always feel like my food is going to be spit in if I don’t but I don’t know what the proper etiquette is. If I am feeling nice, I might throw a buck or 2, but normally I keep my damn money.
I hate that. Even Dunkin Donuts has tip jars…why would I tip you because you stepped back 2 steps, turned around, got me a bagel, and then turned back around to hand it to me. Makes no sense at all.
That’s all a bartender does…
Yea but I put bartenders/servers on the same level. I tend to overtip servers/bartenders anyway. You know how the DC area is- If you aren’t flashing cash you aren’t going to get attention after the first round or so.

But this is also where I have trouble drawing the line because you make a valid point. How do you draw the line?!?

Try this, once you get your first round, say “excuse me, your tip for right now is, if you ignore me the rest of the night, and I’m waiting for drinks, then I’ll be waiting for you, in the parking lot.” then don’t leave a tip.

generally, I believe, if someone does something for you, you should show your appreciation.

Why tip someone for a job I’m capable of doing myself. I can deliver food, I can drive a taxi, I can and do cut my own hair, I did however tip my urologist because I am unable to pulverize my own kidney stones.

Edit: damnit, did I get beat to it??

They just want you to dump your change. Which is what I do at the coffee shop.

I spent almost $100 at Applebees last year around Christmas, when I got the bill I tipped $25 and wrote Merry Christmas, probably most I’ve ever tipped for something.

I tip, not as much as I would tip for table service.
x2

no table service = no tip

There are 3 times to tip:

 1. Waiter/Waitress as in at my table keeping my water filled. And if you do a shitty job you get a shitty tip. None of this guaranteed 20% bullshit.
 2. Bartenders
 3. Strippers, and again there better be table service involved.

I tip just about everyone. If I walk into the Olive Garden and pick up a gift card I usually tip them $5. Such small amounts mean nothing to me (figure I might spend an extra $100/year on things that most people don’t tip) but they really make the person receiving the tip happy.

I was a pizza delivery guy for a couple years so I know the difference between a $2 tip and a $5 tip is huge.

I was too! Pizza delivery. Server. Valet.

Yet I still don’t know when to tip.

I would prefer it if wait staff were paid a normal wage and I didn’t have to tip. Just add extra cost to the food.

But I bet those waitresses and waiters and bartenders that can rake in $500 extra in a night would say “NO!!! we don’t want to make $8.00 an hour.” But then they would bitch if they don’t make excessive extra money.

Give them a standard wage and get rid of tips.

I delivered for a couple different pizza shops and I delivered for a chinese food place. People were always baffled to see me at the door when they ordered chinese food, haha.

You know, I’ve thought about that too. Pretty much everywhere else in the world, waitstaff are paid a decent wage and if you feel like you’ve gotten awesome service, you can leave a little extra. But tipping is never required overseas.

Eh, I only go in there when I have gift cards…I don’t drink coffee so it’ll be to grab some water or a muffin or something along those lines.

Pay the “lazy tax” for sitting in your car, or go inside and get it.

This was pre-lifting and/or in my 1 year of lean-ness so I did not have that effect on people.

I imagine people would think I am going to rob them or offer a scene in a porno now.

on strip clubs, I feel it would be remiss to not include this in the thread:

I tip crappy at strips clubs, even if I have money to blow, and I have just as much fun as the Sultans dropping a c-note every drink.
