Shopping for an Engagment Ring?

A quick note about white gold vs platinum. White gold is especially white at first because it is rhodium plated. The finish can wear over time and take on a slightly yellow/golden tone when compared to platinum which is a true white metal.

In order to maintain that bright white finish, you might have to have your jeweler redo the rhodium plating down the road. It’s not supposed to be an expensive fix, and I don’t know how long it takes for the wear to show (and I’m sure some people are never do anything about it) but it is something to be aware of. I heard this as well. Thanks!
My wedding band is already starting to show signs of yellowing after only 2 years. Which I beat the crap out of it so that’s to be expected. but just trying to give you a little reference.

platinum is very soft. It dents and bends pretty easily for a metal.

My wife’s engagement ring gets re-plated every year or so - very cheap to do. We didn’t have a lot of money when we got hitched, so her engagement ring was white gold and our weddings bands were titanium, with custom inscriptions (and hers customised to fit around the engagement ring).

Yep.

How long have you been dating? Have you ever gone out with her and female friends? Listen closely when they talk about jewelry. I listened more to the conversations about chicks wearing ugly jewelry, that way you absolutely know what to stay away from.

have you ever bought her jewelry? Even if not, go through her jewelry drawer and get an idea of what she likes.

I would buy her jewelry for her birthday, and I memorized her size. I put some of her rings on my pinky to make sure I knew how it fit so I could check the size when it came in.

Find a small shop. Preferably owned by a Jew. I kid. but sort of not. Finer (guys name, Alan Finer) would take trips back to isreal and bring back stuff specifically for me to look at. And tell me stories about the trip. Pretty dang cool if you ask me.

In my experience, small shops CRUSH everyone else in terms of price. I am talking like more than half off. I also found that smaller shops will hold stones for you while others come in to compare. I didnt have that kind of service from zales and the like.

Concerning the diamond itself, my thoughts are thus:
After a certain point, the price goes up without any real payoff. VVS and VS are a lot of times indistinguishable from each other unless you know exactly what to look for and have a loop.

Same thing with color, after a certain point, only trained guys with loops can tell the difference difference. or if you sit 2 diamonds next to each other that are significantly different, but who the crap does that except a jewelry store?

if you find a great stone that only has a minor inclusion, see if they can mount it with the inclusion under the prong. sneaky little trick Finer showed me that i sure didnt know about.

I think cut is important. I (and my wife) prefer round cut diamonds because they allow the diamond to be a diamond and shine (prismatic shape and whatnot). BUT, if the cut is a little off you can get dull spots, or if the face is too broad you can get duller shimer. The broad face makes the diamond look a little bigger, but it dont sparkle like a diamond anymore. same with the other cuts, imo. marquise and square may look like a bigger stone on a carrot-to-carrot basis, but they dont shine like only a diamond can. those cuts should be left for other stones imho. But if it is what she likes then i shut my damn mouth.

If you just cant decide, go for the bigger one. i got my wife a respectable size (at least for these parts - more than 0.5 less than 100 carrots :P) and even her friends that dont like round cuts always gawk at it.

platinum prongs cuz its stronger and stiffer. at least according to the material data i can find.

I really like this 1 carrot ring. It’s exquisite. Fine enough to make Bugs Bunny jealous!

Was trying to post this image. Hope it works this time.

I jacked it to a picture of your wife Waittz. Good Job.

You pick the stone, let her pick the setting.

This the best bang for your buck as far as the stone:

Super Ideal Cut Round (don’t skip on cut or get something that is not round, this cut gives the best sparkle)

F-G color (very tough to tell from D and E, especially in the right setting, but saves you some money)

VS-1 or VS-2 (can’t see the “flaws” with the naked eye until you get to SI-1 unless the flaw is in a bad place, but saves you some money.)

Get the biggest rock in your budget based on the above specs.

Got the ring last night. Jjackkrash are you a wizard? Pretty much exactly how it went down.

I tell her everyday that somewhere, someone is masturbating to your Instagram.

Sweet. If you followed that formula, you did well. Picking the stone is the man’s job, and if you let her pick she might want some stupid non-round cut. Bullshit on that. But picking the setting without her input is just too risky. I proposed with just the rock and took her to a custom jewelry maker who was also my client to build the setting exactly the way she wanted. It worked out great. And those stats IMO hit the sweet spot for price/quality of the stone.

Now all you need to do is give her a Pearl Necklace…

You dont?

Maybe I should have put up a disclaimer for keeping out the misogyny.
haha

Lets see you when she hands you the divorce papers. Somehow I doubt you’ll be happy with the result.

Usually when someone actually wants something bad to happen to a random stranger for no other reason than personal satisfaction they are either very unhappy with their own lives or insecure. Eitherway I feel sorry for people like you.

I picked out the stone and two settings, one I wanted to get her and the one she thought she wanted style wise. Then made her come in and try both on. Mine one. She loved it.

congrats on the engagement man
