Shirtless in the Gym

I work out at home, although I am shopping for a good gym. But all the ones I have visited would probably bar me from my favorte workout gear - a 16 yr old shirt, faded with holes, and stretched out of its original shape that says “lick it, suck it swallow it”

Someone earlier mentioned Wally World has an under armour equivalent. Anyone?

Reminds of a a set of rules we have posted up at our gym, alongside the usual, ‘all gym users must wear shoes’, etc. there is one that says - All male members must wear a training top" I mean that is so sexist, why is it ok for the females to go topless and not the guys?! To be honest though us Brits being the not so in your face and being somewhat more reserved than our American bros, to train topless in a commercial gym you would deserve a good beating!

On a more serious note: I train at my university’s gym, and sometimes I find myself needing to pump some iron at the end of a stressful day. Of course, if it’s not a gym day, I won’t have all my gear with me, but I decided one day that this shouldn’t deter me from getting a good workout in.

So, I just strip down to my underwear (as I just said, I usually wear boxers, so it’s OK) and workout like that, and barefoot too, like Arnie. I mean, I’d look like a right dork doing squats in my boxers and nice dressy shoes, no?

One of the plusses I’ve found is that on these days I get less people bothering me or wanting to start conversations. Also, they always seem to stop doing their rack curls and leave the rack to me when I approach. In fact, I always find an empty bench available when I need one.

Showering is a bit of a problem, as I don’t have a towel. But not to worry, our changing rooms have some hair dryers in front of the mirrors, so I can get a full-body blow-dry while doing my post-workout posing. Blow-drying has the added bonus of giving Me Beast an afro.

Of course, I have to go home commando–with no underwear–cos they’re all sweaty and I’m not some kind of filthy freak, you know? It’s a shame that Me Beast’s afro is usually spoilt by the time I get home, though.

I should point out that I do workouts like this out of necessity, not because I particularly enjoy it. And I never, ever flex in the gym mirrors. Except after biceps, as I believe it’s mandatory.
I should really try this…I would really like empty rack every time…

LOL

yeah walmart sells something called athletic works (~$10.99) that fits a bit tighter than under armour…and starter, which fits very awkard…about the only advantage under armour has is their line of gears: cold, snow, heat, metal, turf, etc…and that sticker and doggietags…and it feels better on the skin…i use athletic works when all my under armour needs washed…

I train in a good gym. Overall, it reminds me of the one that Ronnie trains in. There just aren’t many larger bodybuilders which is what I was referring to. At the gym I used to train at in Texas, half of the gym seemed to be competitors with a few regularly doing NPC shows. It is motivation in itself to be around people with similar goals rather than a bunch of 160lbs kids who are jumping on the treadmill so they can see their abs despite lacking development everywhere else.
Just when i get out of the dreaded 150s you come along and say that! LOL. Sure is motivation but i hate being considered skinny. The funny thing is that everyone things im a beast at 160, then i come to T-Nation and i feel like a little newbie. I’m not complaining.

So when is it possible to meet the expectations of the Professor?

Don’t worry, I live in Southampton, that’s far away enough from Wales I think.

Miserere,

They have this invention known as a “gym bag” which lets you carry gear around in the off chance you decide you need to “work out”…

One word: Ringworm. If you’re in a public gym wear a shirt.

I’ve never seen anyone in my gym without their shirts. A few that I wouldn’t mind seeing…that said the locker room is an entirely new topic!! Why do the people who should not flaunt it the most??

Really!? Do you think they might sell them here in England? Or is it a Canadian invention you haven’t exported yet?

Wow…that would be so handy…

Hell yeah, and if you’ve ever wrestled, you definitely know what an ugly sight this can be. Good point!

It could be that at 5’10 200 LBS, Im the smallest guy in there.

Clearly not the typical soccer mom, treadmilled, air conditoned social club that many “gyms” have become. I would love to train someplace like that. Being around people who have achieved more than you in terms of their physique is great motivation.

X, are there not good gyms around you? It’s difficult to find a good one around here too, actually.

Haven’t checked this in awhile. That’s cool. I like my gym because it has the freeweights and racks I need. But I agree-it would be nice and motivating as well to train with some serious people.

My simple solution for preferring to be shirtless in the gym but not doing so (out of respect for rules or others):

And I am actually not in any way gay.

When I was in high school (a few years ago) before the gym was remodeled, it was a long dark, dirty room on the second floor of the gymnasium complex that hadn’t been improved since the 1970s. No air conditioning, just a couple of fans – a few short windows up near the ceiling along one side, bad air flow. In the fall and the spring, it would get hot as hell and pretty much every guy would strip off their shirt. I had the pleasure of seeing a few girls strip down to their training bras on a couple occasions.

Now that I think of it that was probably a very odd gym experience. I went to a small boarding school though and everyone knew everyone else.

I workout alone at home, and in the summer it’s definitely a plus to be able to go shirtless.

Defending yourself before you’re accused makes you gay.
