nlmain…CMAS 2 star, which is loosely a Padi rescue diver, loosely. But to do volunteer work with recording marine life & cool stuff like that with an organisation in my area you need a 2*. I’ve been wanting to do that for awhile, maybe even go away some time for a few months to do a marine conservation project. I know worse comes to worse I just do the test over again but…the little Gollum in me WANTS IT NOW!
Ok I’m over it now, TOM is fast approaching, which means my 1-2 days of pain will pass by Sunday, it has good timing for a change. Anyway last night I started thinking about how supportive everyone is in my diving club, so I started to get “warm and fuzzy” feelings now when I think about diving. I’m doing some visualisation of the test too, guess if I couldn’t do everything last Sun might as well imagine myself doing it.
I tried to do some studying last night, but fell asleep, I woke up to do some cleans & presses to wake up, then fell asleep again. So no studying, but damn for some reason my cheap ass York bar feels heavier than the oly bars at the gym. Lectures tonight.
That dive cert sounds really good!!
Cal - yeah I guess there are worse things than the tummy tightening first. It’s only really been the last couple of years where I’ve actually had to pay attention to my waist. My arms are going a bit softer than they used to too. Ah well with age comes wisdom too. But I’m working on tightening things up, this whole test thing has had me lose focus on my lifting. But next wewk it’ll be me & the bar for the rest of the winter.
The samething happened to me once, I went off snorkeling, wound up following this one fish, er, I don’t know for how long lost track of time, I got back just in time to stop a major search part. Here some fishies for you to enjoy
Lexy, yeah you’re right its all mental, and I’m a bit mental myself right now, of course TOM isn’t helping.
MiMsy, thanks! Although I think you need a bit more luck than me.
fish vid is very pretty ![]()
I’m planning a dive in BC next April wich should be cold but very fun.
Hey nlmain, yeah I assume the waters in April will still have some the cold winter in it. Interesting about CMAS rules & recommendations for diving, one can’t dive over 20 meters unless they are classified as an active diver in the last 90 days. If you have not dived in 90 days you have to do 3 snorkels & 3 dives working up to 20 metres. I assume it would be slightly different if it was all tropical dives with great viz.
Anyway weather was too shitty to do test this Sunday. So I met with my coach in the morning for a lifting session er since I didn’t really do anything last week. Last week was a disaster for many things, unorganised, stupid long lectures, TOM & just feeling demotivated.
But I got some new sexy red Do-wins for 35 little ones, much better than spending 100+ big one. The left one is slightly tight but was told they stretch after awhile. Didn’t get a chance to use them on Sunday’s session but can’t wait to try out on Tues.
TOM saps my motivation too. Actually, I’m fine during - it’s the week leading up to where I can’t get my arse out of the chair. I guess it’s the drop in hormones.
As for softening up, yeah, it happens easily but I guess there’s no real excuse.
Apparently, this is why I need better wrist wraps. My coach was presenting my wrist around to everyone. Ideally my wrist should not be able to bend like that the other way.
Calsies, I know, no real excuse for softening. This TOM was pretty bad, but I barely had a moment to myself last week. I like my ‘me’ time.

Holy hell that’s disturbing. I think your coach is right. I’m also jealous of all of your snorkling. That sounds amazing!
Looks like a case of hypermobility. Which is great in some ways (it doesn’t hurt in the bedroom, certainly!) but having such a big ROM can be down to lax ligaments which could spell trouble on the injury front if you’re not careful.
I hear you on the TOM stuff. Looks like I’ll get mine right in the middle of my weekend away. Suck.
Hey ironcross, its amazing but actually its getting cold and miserable, I’m ready to put up my fins for the winter.
Cal, yeah I gots some hypermobility in a few places, mainly upper body. My scapula shoulder bones do this weird thing (so I’ve been told, can’t really see around my back to well), but they can stick out like little fairy wings, I can’t seem to do it at will but it happens. My elbows are funny too, but the coach says they are good a locking out, so at least that’s one thing in my favour.
Went down yesterday even though I should’ve been at our annual diving club meeting. Was too lazy & I’d promised to be down at the gym anyway. Had a nice session, coach only corrected me once. Shoes are good too, I can get into position without wiggling my feet around, which will save me a few seconds of concentration. Still need to work on pulling the hips up.
Snatch work yesterday, but the coach wasn’t there so I got a little rebellious & changed/added a few things. Those jump snatches hurt my wrist, so only did 2 sets. Exchanged sets starting at hip hinge/crease instead, felt much better on my wrists & got to work the hip up & pull. Bar felt heavy though. Also added 3 sets of off the floor snatches, my new buddy was there said they looked ok.
Then dragged myself down to the pool, I practised some snorkel training stuff, like mask replacement under water, & doing 2 lengths with just the snorkel and no mask. Got some nice burny chlorine water up my nose a few times. Tried to go under about 3 metres but couldn’t clear my ears so left it at that.
Cal, HAHAH!
Yikes, that hypermobility is crazy, altho could be fun for pranks, “my wrist! my wrist!..just kidding”
Switching things up when the coach is not there is a great idea! I find that sometimes under the watchful eye of the coach (we actually call our coach Hawk Eye Joe behind his back, lol!) things can feel a bit tense, like everything always has to be done right and corrected, a lot of thinking.
But when he’s not around you get a chance to play a bit more, which is cool as it builds confidence and brings the ‘joy’ back into the lifts (to use Lexy’s terminology). Then next time you see the coach you can be like, “look what I can do Coach!” and then he’ll begin to correct you and the cycle starts all over again. Lol!
Cool on practicing the snorkeling! I assume you snorkel with just the mask if you want to go under water…? I snorkeled once off the Florida Keys and almost drowned when I came face to face with a very large grouper! They are docile I believe, but intimidating for a land mammal!
Maschy! Yeah my wrists, so far only hurts on the stupid jump snatches. Then again my coach decided to keep me on light enough weight until he feels that I should move on to adding weight. Which in a way I’m fine with. I have not been lifting consistently enough to question anyone and I don’t need any more injuries. But yes I’ll have fun with some stuff, its not like I’ve never done snatches off the floor before. I keep forgetting that I can just drop the bar though, I don’t have to prissly place it down.
As for the exercise without the mask, its good to get used to if you are ever diving and for some reason another diver decides to knock it off you with their stupid fins. Swimming without a mask while breathing through a regulator can be quite a nuisance, as you are swimming & trying to breathe stupid water gets a little up your nose, oh yeah and the not being able to see jack shit.
Im f-ing tired today, feel 10 years older.
So crawled to the gym with a hangover, how did that happen??? Snatching was meh, as to be expected. Presses and front squats were ok, well except for the 4th set of FS, felt a bit pukey. My knee was ever so slightly niggly.
There are only 2 platforms in the new gym, no one was on either of them when I signed in, then 6 of us decided to go at the same time. In fairness the fellows were nice enough and they moved over. Have to say this new club member gym feels way more cozy and homey then the oly one, the other one was just to open and the platforms always made me feel like I was on stage (which I don’t like). But I did have more of a rapport with my former coach, but my new one is good too.
Although the new one’s philosophy is to not train lighter around TOM. Ah I’m not so sure about that one. Once he feels that my technique is consistent he’s moving me unto a 4 week cycle. Which is great as long as the heavy sessions are not on TOM. Just kind of goes against what I’m trying to do with making peace with my hormonal time. I’ve spent too many years, no decades, fighting with it. Anyway we shall see, I’ll do what I’m told then go from there. Who knows the cycle might actually revolve around it

There’s plenty of research out there to back up deloading around TOM, maybe take it to him and he’ll adjust the program to actually meet your needs?
Thanks Patches! He’s very very old school, he thinks doing bulgarians is a waste. Don’t worry I’ll think of something, or well the cramps will make me think of something when the time is right.
Had a good session, well except for every 3rd rep, these triples are tiring. Did hang snatches, above & below knee. I don’t like the below the knee hang, makes my shoulders all tired & shit. I tried to get him to let me just do it right off the floor, but he says next week. Ah well, it’ll make coming off the floor again that much sweeter. Did some presses, & FS and on my own some bulgarians & ab work.
Nice endorphins though.
Don’t like morning workouts. Didn’t feel at all in touch until after the 4th set. Just more snatch work, hoping to be lifting off the floor next week. My traps are killing me, but got in a few fierce ones.
Front Squats felt easy. So tired going to go watch movie & veg out the rest of the day.
Hmm, gotta pay attention to where I’m putting in the aggression during the lift. I think I put in the right place yesterday but woke up thinking that maybe I didn’t??? My shoulder was killing me yesterday after the session, rolled it out & had to hook myself up to the TENS machine for like 2 hours, feels fine this morning though.
