Shaving and Acne

I agree with this. I can’t use the Gillette Sensor Excel 3 or the Mach 3 or anything with more than three blades. They tear up my face! Not necessarily acne, but with ingrown hairs, cuts, etc.

Once I went back to using the regular Gillette Sensor Excel, I rarely had issues.

Always use hot water or a hot wash cloth to soften up your face prior to shaving. Use a good shave cream for sensitive skin and go for it. Unlike others, I prefer to shave and then shower. Use warm water in the shower to clean up, then finish with cold water to close the pores.

Grow a beard.

Aveeno may be alright for acne but I find it isn’t a very good shaving cream in general. Also I would avoid 3 bladed razors. I find they cause a lot of ingrown hairs.

Right now I use the Gillette sensor excel and it works much better than the mach 3, sensor 3, Quattro, etc.

I have pretty sensitive skin, so I (literally) feel your pain. My 2 or so cents:

  1. I actually prefer the Mach 3 razors and do not find I get more ingrown hairs with them. I just find the way the razor is configured gives me a close shave without an issue.

  2. Do you shave against the grain of the hair? I used to do that and it cause me an enormous amount of problems from ingrown hairs, whiteheads, etc. It was miserable. Once I started only shaving with the grain of the hair, things improved markedly.

  3. I think you should not skimp on what you use on your face after shaving. A friend of mine got me to try this stuff:

Sweet mother of God it was like another world. My face recovered from shaving so much better and was just flat out more comfortable. It is a bit pricey per container, but you can get away with using it sparingly no problem. Plus, given how good your face feels afterwards, it will seem a pretty small price to pay.

Hope that helps!

I have this problem as well… not acne but very sensitive skin. So much to the point that I dont even shave anymore… I just use a trimmer and go over my beard every morning… of course it looks like I always have a 5 oclock shadow or whatever you call it but its much better than an itchy face and ingrown hairs.

My chest and stomach don’t really bother me too much unless I shave after I shower. Seems like using warm water and shaving BEFORE I shower gives the least amount of irritation.

Some who are like me [adult too] have the problem of minute in growing hairs as the cause of razor bumps on the neck and jaw. I guess its not the same thing, but I’m finally prevailing over this seemingly endless curse. For me it was finally gettng at those problem hairs and fully cleansing the surface skin at all times.

Any other additional conditions you can fill us in on? ie, dry skin/sensitive skin etc., just to get further input perhaps.

To the ‘dude aren’t you 30’ dope. Go rent the Spongebob movie if you aren’t up to ‘grown-up’ discussions.
