Self-Prescribing Levothyroxine?

So these are older labs:

FT4: 20.21 pmol/L (12.0-22.0)
TT4: 113.7 nmol/L (66.0-181.0)
TSH: 5.63 uI/ml (0.27-4.20)

More recent:

TSH: 6.3 Ui/ml (0.27-4.20)

FT3 5.90 pmol/L (2.8 - 7.1)

I also have had a very small lump that had been fluctuating in size over the past 2-3 years on the right side of my neck.

TSH has been gradually getting higher and higher since I started getting all my issues.

So I’m going to be taking Levothyroxine because TRT hasn’t fixed all of my fatigue, depression, and emotional issues. At what dosage should I take it? 25MG ED? What happens if it makes me feel worse, could I just stop taking it?

I know this may sound stupid, but I’m desperate for relief. Doctor saw my labs and told me that I’m fine because T3 and T4 are still within range, but I’m having some extremely similar symptoms related to hypothyroidism and I would like to try, I have nothing left to lose at this point since my fatigue has made me useless and unable to achieve anything. Taking an rT3 test is not an option, taking the test here is way too expensive and doesn’t cover insurance. Should I be taking synthetic T3 also or just T4?

You have a lot going on there…

First of all, just given your TSH number, the lump in your neck, and your symptoms, you need to get you ass to a doctor pronto!..just not the one who told you your numbers look fine…not that doctor…another doctor. Any other doctor.

Secondly, if you were to take thyroid meds, you wouldn’t want to take just T4. You’d want to take a balanced combo of T3 and T4. However, I wouldn’t recommend using any meds at this point until you’ve seen a competent doctor.

I’ll second the above. You need to get that lump evaluated. If you do end up on thyroid, you need to include T3. With your numbers and symptoms, if due to thyroid, you likely have a conversion issue and simply taking T4 will continue to elevate your rT3.

@gtron Yeah man, I know but I literally have spent alot of money going to the “best” endocrinologist with high qualifications in the country and she didn’t even comment on my TSH and had “no idea” why my testosterone is low… So assuming my RT3 is high, wouldn’t I only take T3 meds?

@highpull What kind of dosages would you reccomend as a starting dose for both T3,T4?

Wouldn’t you guys agree that TT4 needs a bit of a boost? I’m a bit on the lower end of the range. Hypothetically would it be crazy to think that that all my problems will be solved if I boost my T4 a little bit?

Usually the T4/T3 ratio is around 8 to 1. I think most everyone that participates on this forum does so to help others. I’m very hesitant to encourage you to self prescribe thyroid. It’s nothing to mess around with or guess what doses to use, more difficult than testosterone. Plus, you have a nodule, a persistent one at that. Someone needs to evaluate it and determine exactly what it is.

I have high rT3 and all other aspects of my thyroid are “in range”. Defy Medical had me on 15mcg of T3 only meds hoping that would bring the rT3 down. It didn’t. So today they bumped me up 25mcg to see if that works.

The only reason I chimed in is because to bring rT3 down, you do need to be on T3 only meds.
