As far as risks to your health go, second-hand smoke is far worse than first hand smoke. First hand goes through a filter, which filters out a lot of the tars and nastiness, but the second-hand smoke is unfiltered and way worse.
I’m surprised that people seem to have much sympathy for smokers on this site. For the amount of articles about health and keeping yourself in good shape, smoking is probably one of the single worst things you can do to yourself. It hurts muscle gains and reduces testosterone in a non-trivial way. If you live with a smoker it’s likely impacting the muscle gains you could be making. For those reasons alone I’m surprised anybody here would defend smoking at all. Not to mention the fact that it kills people and costs us all billions of dollars in health care costs.

If you read the report, it says the people most exposed to 2nd hand smoke are the children of smokers and people who work in smoking environments.

(full disclosure: I used to smoke for 9 years, so I might be a little biased.)

Personnally, it’s not really sympathy as much as not having problems with smokers.
I don’t like having to breathe second hand smoke, but nowadays, it is a very rare occasion that I find myself having to do so.
For the last few years, all smokers I’ve come across smoke either outside, in their cars or at home. The worst annoyance is probably smoker coworkers with strong cigarette-breath and smelly clothes. I offer them gum until they get it.
I guess many of them do deserve some sympathy, as many of them would like to quit, but can’t seem to shake the addiction.
