It looked like the owner isn’t too happy with him and was relieved he was suspended by the league so they have some recourse to get rid of him. As for the comment and suspension, I agree it’s more of a body of work suspension because if you suspend a guy indefinitely for a stupid coment like that then what do you do with guys who do drugs, drink and drive, beat their wives, etc.? Capital punishment?
you’er all a bunch of pussys if you crying about what he said
I’m pretty sure if Ron Artest can punch out a fan and start a massive brawl and still come back to play in the NBA, then I think a comment like this can tolterated at least a little
Andrei Arlovski > Sean Avery
I actually think his comment is hilarious, the NHL needs more of those ‘bad boys’ who don’t care what they say, or who they say it to. But that’s the thing about hockey, a lot of the guys who are too ‘badass’ get outcasted. Hell, remember when Don Cherry made that European comment and he got put on the 7 second delay thing? That was friggin’ lame.
Personally, I think Avery’s comment is awesome. He’s starting shit, straight up on TV. I love shit disturbers!
Apparently he has apologized now and they are projecting a 5 game suspension.
He is an ass only because he purposely called the cameras over and made that comment.

Interesting. Everyone is for censorship as long as it happens to someone they don’t like. If it happens to someone they do like, then it’s, “Death to Political Correctness!!!”.
Excuse me, could you fill me in for a second…
They banned a hockey player for saying sloppy seconds on camera?
I am asking because where I come from hockey players are big , though guys who occasionally beat themselves senseless on the ice?
Or is yours the version where men where tights and dance to classic music?

It looks like its turning into more of the latter
For those of you who don’t follow the NHL regularly. Sean Avery has repeatedly shown a complete lack of professionalism, on and off the ice, throughout his career (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/hockey/nhl/12/03/avery.timeline/).
The league seems to be viewing this as the last straw. Yes, it may seem a bit harsh, but what Avery said could be considered rather crass and vulgar by some and the NHL still takes leage, team, and player image very seriously.
That being said, I wonder what would have happened if, instead of Avery, it had been Bettman’s golden boy Sidney Crosby who’d said it? Methinks a slap on the wrist probably.
Honestly, I’d rather the league let him play and let the other players take care of his attitude. Hell, he got his ass beaten twice in Boston a few weeks ago. It’s only a matter of time before he gets cornered by someone like Georges Laraque and ends up severely beaten.
The guy once made fun of another player for having cancer.
He IS a cancer. The best thing that could happen is Dallas buries him in the minor leagues after he serves his suspension and see how he likes making his comments while ridin’ the fucking team bus from city to city.

Hell, I was known to take people’s legs out in Track and Field and that is a non-contact sport! Maybe I’m a jerk, nah, I’m a man and this is the reasonable way to settle things. If you date my exs without at least asking me if it’s ok.
If you do not at least do the gentlemanly thing then I am going to take you out and be really obvious about it.
Nope, you’re a jerk. They’re an “ex” and that means they are no longer attached to you. How is it “gentlemanly” to expect to have control over whether your ex dates or doesn’t date someone? And it doesn’t sound like you are “gentlemanly” in handling the situation either. It sounds more like you have serious control issues.

Hatari,
I am not saying that one should control another once they are no longer with them. What I am saying is this, as a man, it is polite to get approval of the guy that you know before dating the girl. It is at least polite to ask.
I, of course, am denying this “control issue” accusation and have had this conversation with friends. If you know the guy it is infact polite to ask if he minds.

Avery and Phaneuf are not friends. They only know eachother through hockey. Phaneuf did not have to ask to date Elisha Cuthbert.
And if you were not referring to this situation with your post then please disregard this post!
He should just work for that gay ass fashion magazine full time. Due to the fact that he’s a completely tasteless moron.

Fair enough. I was reading your post in the context of expecting someone you don’t really know to ask. That’s where the control part came in, so I apologize if I misunderstood you. I agree that it’s polite to make sure it won’t cause problems with a friend.

I’d misplaced my list of derogatory names. I’ll be sure to find it and make up for the lack of name calling when I respond in the future. ![]()
Back on topic, I agree with the previous posters who said that this probably shouldn’t be viewed as an isolated incident, but rather as the most recent of a string of actions that finally went too far.
I can’t quite remember where Dallas is placed in the league right now. I don’t think he’s got the team fortitude to buoy his team.
For the people saying so what, what’s the big deal? - Suspending him, and ideally shipping him down will keep him from getting crippled (usually happens televised) by some player/s who’ve just grown tired of Avery’s crap. There have been players who have deliberately tried to maim other players (sucker punches, spearing to the face, etc) as opposed to bare-knuckles boxing with a willing opponent. The NHLPA has usually defended the ‘Assault-ors’(sic?) rights more than the victim’s.
Avery’s a big enough dick that the rest of the league is doing the “Don’t make eye contact with him, whistle, look around, pretend this seat’s taken, etc”
but some team will eventually get desperate enough to figure he’ll be just what they need. God willing, it’s the Flames.

Does this mean most big people where you from are women?
He got 6 games it seems. This is the first time I can remember where a player was suspended more for his pattern of conduct than the specific offense. Normally the pattern is just a multiplier for what would be earned on from the act, but this was clearly 6 games for generally being a colossal douchebag.
Everyone is sick of his shit and I think the league was just sort of waiting for him to take that one last step over the line like he inevitably would.
The one thing I was liking about him was that he’s ruined the chemistry in the Dallas locker room to such an extant that they’ve been battling for the worst record in the league rather than being among the best where they belong. Supposedly quite a few Dallas players are hoping they never have to see him again.
