The reason he turns his back on his ways is because he sees the hypocrisy in the nazi gang in the jail, and is forced to spend time with a black guy. And because they PIIHB. He doesn’t try to stop the neo-nazis anyway, he just tries to save his brother from turning into one. Also both blacks and white in the film are portayed as evil, eg. the black guys who break into his car leading to him attacking them. Or the black kid at the end bit. It’s a good film because it isn’t about racism against black people, but because it’s about how hate breeds more hate, and how both races can hate each other. Hell if anything blacks came slightly worse off in the film because atleast the white guys turned their back on racism, whereas the black kid at the end went batshit insane.

I would say it is important to learn from it and know about it in detail.
I also don’t think he is beating himself up about it. In fact, I would guess many younger guys today are completely unaware of just how fucked up shit was in the 60’s and before…and that goes for all races.

I did see the film and what I have outlined is pretty much what happens, save for the twist in the end. It is a grim film and I enjoyed it.
