To add, once plaque becomes hard and needs to be scraped off, it is called “calculus”. That means it was there long enough to harden…which means if you have it, your brushing technique is poor to begin with because you would have eliminated it before it ever got that bad.

That may be why you got some attitude from someone without true professional training. I know I am amazed by how bad some people let their mouths get before they ever do anything about it. For someone who gets FREE treatment in the military, it makes no sense at all…

Dr. X,

Would a Water Pic be a good alternative to flossing?

It would be second best and not an equal alternative. Nothing, as of yet, beats putting something between the teeth and dragging it out.

Yea, I have a water pick too. It even says on it’s packaging that it’s not a replacement for flossing.

i don’t understand why flossing is often seen in such a negative light. i’ve been called “anal” for flossing by someone uses those tooth whitening strips…and how much do those things cost ? i don’t know man, it’s not such a big chore. i floss a few times a day. just like i wash my hands after hitting the lav. i’d actually rather floss than brush.

You only really need to floss the teeth you want to keep.
