Announced by Sarah Palin and McCain officials today.
I don’t know what, if any, impact this will have on the prospects for the McCain/Palin ticket.
Sarah Palin made the announcement today, in order to rebut some vicious rumours that began circulating in the blogosphere a couple of days ago - rumours to the effect that her youngest son, Trig, was actually her eldest daughter Bristol’s child.
“Senior McCain campaign officials said McCain knew of the daughter’s pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, deciding that it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.”

I’m jealous of the incredible dynamics (and bloodsport!) of American politics. Canadian elections are, in comparison, boring - a reflection of how “nice” we are.
LOL@ Palin being a proponent of “abstinence-only sex education”.
Not that the mountains of evidence in the form of peer reviewed scientific studies shouldnt have been enough (as if Christianists could give a damn…)
It sucks for the daughter to have all this attention on her as a 17 year old mother to be. The blogging/conspiracy that she was the mother of the downs baby was awful too…
Sarah Palin at home with her family in Wasilla. From left is Piper, 5; husband, Todd; Willow, 12; and at right is Bristol, then 16. Not pictured is Palin’s son, Track, then 17.
Trig was not yet born when this photo was taken, in March 2008.
She’s engaged to the father, but in Palin’s case this will be trumpeted by the media as hypocrisy and her failure as a mother of her own children by her own standards and it probably is to some degree.
Obama’s campaign says anybody attempting to play politics with this issue will be fired, but that won’t stop every single ally of his not formally employed by the campaign from pounding it to dust.

I agree abstinence only sex education does not seem to work. You can’t fight the media and pop culture. About 30 minutes per day of abstinence only training…if that…and about 3 hours per day of sex in your face, TV, mags, movies etc.
This won’t have much of an effect on her candidacy however. And if the liberal media tries to make it a big deal there will be a nasty backlash. Do you know how many mothers have had daughters get pregnant at an early age?
They better find another way to shut her down this will never work.

This is the beauty of picking Palin. If the left goes after her, they put all of their pet agendas on the guillotine as well.
Are they willing to throw their women’s movement under the bus just to attack a VP candidate? Somehow I doubt it.
Don’t tell me that if one of Obama’s daughters would get pregnant at 17, the outrage wouldn’t be tremendous.
For same reason a candidate should be married and have children, this matters: A candidate is expected to have a model familiy and live a life according to certain values. Values, that some candidates and partys are even more eager to promote.
Sarah Palin’s values somehow didn’t stick to her daughter’s uterus, and that is telling.
Anyway, this will p[robably hurt her appeal with the Evangelical crowd, which was probably a good 50% of why McCain picker her in the first place. He really didn’t do his homework on this one <_<.
This matter’s little to me. Personal issues are personal.
However her support of abstinence education does make this utterly hilarious.

What is abstinence only training? How does that work?

why does this matter? Better this child be born to this particular 17 year old girl then some crack whore welfare spawn.[/quote]
Nobody’s been arguing otherwise – and you know it!
The issue is whether girls (be they privileged kids or crack whores) should be taught about sex and given access to contraception. The question of women’s rights to do as they please with their bodies is central to this newsbite as well.
“Why does this matter?”, you ask. Because it’s ironic that Palin happens to oppose both.

Who is outraged? So far, the only people posting ave been those who thought it was funny.
I don’t know how it translates in German, but outrageous, hilarious, etc. are all words used to describe things people find humorous - not anger.

It’s not as if this is Nancy Pelosi’s daughter in which case we probably wouldn’t even find out because Pelosi makes no noise about this kind of thing. Issue or not, they WILL make it one.
CNN also dug up a 24 year old DWI that her husband got.

Palin’s a feminist now?
If people attack Palin because she’s a woman, you might have a point.
Attacking her retrograde ideas and positions has nothing to do with her being a woman.

Retrograde ideas? Such as? She believes in abstinence? Really? You want to take on the entirety of the Catholic American population by ridiculing something like that?

McCain knew her daughter was knocked up before he offered the job to Palin.
What kind of homework needed to be done? Focus groups?
