san diego housing

I’m moving to San Diego later this month. I have arranged housing thru 8/31, but am looking for a room under $600. Anybody of you San Diegans have advice? Thanks, Pete

Good luck. Try the outskirts. El Cajon is white trash heaven and you can find a couple of decent places there.

We were just there, and i could have sworn that I saw some places downtown that were listed at 600. They were near Ralph’s grocery, or the gas lamp district. I could be wrong though.

If your looking for just a room in the $600 dollar range look in the roomate section of The Reader. You should be able to find a good place in La Mesa, College area, Mira Mesa, or Mission valley. If your willing to spend a couple more hundred dollars you could find a nice studio at the beach such as Pacifac Beach or Ocean Beach.

For that amount you’ll either need to peruse the newspapers and online for the roommate ads, or you’ll need to go significantly north, south, or inland. If you go the roommate route, look in the school papers, as students are always seeking roomies to assuage rent costs.

Hey…sorry to be a thread hijacker, but I just found out that I will be moving to San Diego also! I haved decided that the consultant/traveling lifestyle is not for me anymore. Does anyone know any good, specific complexes in the 900-1100 range? Also, any thoughts about good gyms? I appreciate all of your help.

By the way, Ko and Patricia, I was in town interviewing on Friday, and drove by the civic center. I saw the comic-con banner, and thought of you. Hope you had a good time! I was staying on Harbor Island…Matt

Matt, Pacific Villa is a fine complex on Clairemont Dr.

Thanks! Do you have any info about that complex?

Hey, Matt: You should have stopped on by the Con! Maybe next year? I’ll either have a table or a booth next year - so definitely stop by. To answer your question about gyms in San Diego. There is a 24Hour Fitness right in Horton Plaza. But for a better gym, there is a World Gym just north of downtown San Diego, it’s right off the freeway - you can see it, too. I worked out there when it useto be a Golds Gym back in '97. It useto be a car sales lot - and the building has plenty of room. But, Machine knows about ALL of the gyms in that area, where is he?

As for housing, there is a ton of new development going on in the Gaslamp district. Someone mentioned Mission Valley - that's a good area. The neat thing is that the Coaster goes right up through downtown SD and up to Mission. So, it's pretty easy to get around. Might I suggest checking online at one of the site's about San Diego, like City Search or their Chamber of Commerce. I have a site that I go to, I'll find it and post later.

Matt, I do not live in the complex, but own a home near by. A friend leases a 2 bedroom unit for 1,000 a month. There is a swimming pool and laundry rooms. The units that have a view of Mission Bay and the ocean are a tad more per month. If you get a map of San Diego,Hwy 5 (freeway), look for Clairemont Dr. which starts at the freeway and goes east up hill. This complex is approximately two miles for the ocean and 1 mile from Mission Bay. In my opinion, this is one of the nicer areas. The view is from La Jolla to downtown. There are many other apartment complexes along Clairemont Dr. This area is a perfect location. 5 minutes to the airport, SeaWorld is a mile away. The beaches are minutes away and in close enough to get the ocean breeze. Hope this helped.

Hey Matt, Just read Patrica’s post and the World’s Gym she spoke of is about a mile from where I am telling you about. I train at an old Jack LaLaine (sp)(California Health Spa) which is a block from Pacific Villa. It has an indoor and outdoor swimming pools. About @ miles east 24 hour fitness. In Pacific Beach a mile away is a Powerhouse gym. Hope this helps.

Patricia…glad to hear you had a good time! I was in town to interview and check out the area, so my time was a bit limited. But, next year I’ll come!

I’ve been looking at the citysearch site, as well as apartmentguide, but what I’m looking for is people’s personal experiences. For instance, thanks for the info on World gym. It’s nice to know where people have gone and had good luck.

My wife and I are going to fly out there in a couple of weeks to look at all of the apartments and areas that sound interesting, so I’m trying to get as much info beforehand as possible. Thanks again!..Matt

It definitely helped! Thanks a lot!

Thanks to all for the advice.-Pete

The Readers website is www.sdreader.com, and you can check out the newspaper for rentals, its www.union-trib.com. If you want a place by yourself your going to pay at least 700 a month, if your rooming up with someone you can find a nice 2 bedroom for 900+, good luck.

More San Diego questions. What area of SD has the highest babe concentration? What area’s best for nightlife? Thanks
