I’ve never heard of it being from prison… and in prison you can have a belt. They issue them. If you couldn’t have something due to choking hazard, they wouldn’t get pants, shirts, sheets, towels, etc. either.

Actually though, sagging pants have a purpose (as I have been learning through internships with police departments). A lot of crack dealers slinging on the corners will take a rock, twist it real tight into the corner of a sandwich baggy and shove a couple rocks up their ass. When stopped/frisked/questioned on the corner by an officer, no one’s going fingering around their ass, and they can usually get away with it. The sagging pants come into play for the easy access. They’ll:
A) grab a rock out and put it in their mouth until they get a buyer, keeping the rest in the vault…
or B) fish one out while you wait to buy one.
Either way, it’s gross as shit, and in the summer if you hit the bad parts of town, you’ll see the little baggy corners in the gutters all over the place.

Where the hell are some of you living? Sagging pants is so common around here that NO ONE is relating it to the shit you all seem to be. I personally think it is over the top if your pants are literally halfway around your legs, but to make these statements relating it directly to drug dealing and homosexuality is equally stupid.
It is a cultural issue at this point and you will see different attitudes about clothing depending on what area you drive in around this city.

Prof, I don’t think anyone’s disputing the culture issue at this point. I believe the OP was trying to locate the origin. I’d lean towards the response of low income and hand-me-downs.
Although use by drug dealers isn’t out of the question. Drug dealers and thieves also layer clothing a lot too to make what they are selling/stealing harder to find during a pat down. Drug dealers however did not invent layering, cold people did.
I dont know how it is in the rest of the world but in Texas, if you sag in prison or jail, you not only put out but are also claimed. Out in the world, sagging, big, baggy jeans allows you to steal more, carry more stuff and ditch your clothes faster if running from the fuzz. Its really easy to spot criminals here. The dumbasses think they are cool for it. They might as well tattoo “SEARCH ME” on their foreheads.
A few weeks ago I was walking home for Quik Stop and I notice a bus passing me by. Seconds later I see 2 black kids chasing the bus, yelling at it to stop while holding there pants up as they run after it. After a block of chasing they couldn’t catch up. If they only wore pants that fit, they might have caught it. Damn. I couldn’t keep the laughter in because of the silliness.
Most of the kids who sag their pants where I live wear belts. Figure that one out. This fad started out in when I was in high school and I was really, really hoping it’d die out after a few years. About 5-10 years ago it was really waning and I didn’t see it as much. Over the last couple years it seems to be on the rise again.
The sagging skinny jeans thing is worse. It’s more popular in the richer towns than the blue collar towns around here. I swear these white emo fags do everything in their power to look weak and feminine by wearing their little sisters jeans and making sure they’re thinner than the girls they hang out with.

Around here dress codes have been debated and put into schools pretty recently. OK. I will. Most of the black and alot of the Spanish kids in my area sag their pants. There’s been like 5 murders in the last 10 years (don’t think any were committed by kids in sagging pants) and hardly anyone ever gets arrested for carrying weapons. If they do, its because they had it stashed in their car.

Well then the police department there is teaching them how to catch stupid criminals. No corner boy keep rocks on his person. They need to teach them about runners, stash, etc.
Anyway, the pants started in prison - but I think the claims of homosexuality are spurious at best. There is also some roots with the hand me downs from older brothers.
The whole purpose of this is to piss off parents, I know it has been 20 years since I was in my teens. I have 5 teenagers. Fashion is just to display separation from the parents. My father grew up in the 60’s so he had long hair, I have had a flat top since 7th grade. All my boys have long hair. This is not that hard to figure out. If everyone would just point, laugh and ignore maybe they will try something new.

I live Houston,Tx. I do see the gang bangers sag their pants in my neighborhood but since I hang around the nicer areas in the City (Galleria Area,Heights,Montrose) I generally do not see many other people my age sag their pants.
