137 civilians dead.
Military personel - over a thousand dead.
Russians hide the info on their loses, of course, cuz they couldnt care less. Going by what Ukrainians say, it seems that Russia is losing much more than Ukrainians right now, the problem is that every Ukrainian solder is worth gold, while every russian parasite means nothing to anyone.
That actually hashes with my family oral history, even though I don’t recall hearing that explanation about the origin of dumb Polack jokes. I just know that my mom and her four siblings did not speak Polish, despite being raised in the 40’s through the 70’s by two Poles. I know that this was by design, as my Polish grandparents, both born in Poland during the teens and early twenties, made a very deliberate effort to raise American children.
Back on-topic, does anyone have any sources they’d recommend for good reporting on this unfolding event?
Of course not, I’m just telling you the racist stereotype that’s very prevalent among the members of the Russian elite all the way from Tsarist times.
And with US intel about camps and extermination lists, it seems that he’s planning to convert their racist assumption into reality.
Haha I knew this was coming. I hoped it was clear I only meant a defensive war. Taking Russia in Russia is not a recipe for winning. Guerilla warfare in the cold east is fucking horrible. But that is a reason why I don’t think Ukraine is necessarily doomed. They have more men and a better position strategically.
It has been said above but Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons for protection and sovereignty. We have a duty to defend them. The EU and the US. We made a deal.
To the immigrant point above. The immigrants that came to the US 100 years ago are different in mind than this that come to the EU or US today. The people who came 100 years ago came for freedom and they knew they would have to work their ass off as nothing was guaranteed. The spirit was one of risk taking for a better life. The immigrants today are largely coming because of a guaranteed 100% financial burden free life (at least in the EU). It’s a different mentality if you seek freedom or if you seek security.
We see it now playing out. This who seek security will have neither freedom nor security. We want to be secure and not fight? Ok, then some other Power will take every country until you either fight or are not free any longer.
I have no affinity for Russia. I’m fascinated by it partly bc of its affinity for shit like this.
With that said the “comrade Rolodex” approach has really helped me
I have a great affinity for Germany
Oh look, the Russians who share the same “Judeo-Christian values” according to Bannon and Tucker are deploying their jihadi head choppers to Ukraine. This aren’t frontline combat troops, they will be used to murder/rape infidel civilians.
So my “theory” around the hyper sonic missiles is this (based on nothing more than guess work BTW):
Hyper sonic tech is not new. And while it is powerful - I think it is not all powerful. Not to the extent Russia thinks.
Think about it - the USA has 11 aircraft carriers. The UK has 2. Nato has 17 out of the 22 in the world. If there was a tech that reduced their capacity - the combined government of North America and Europe would not just “allow” it to happen. So while they are great and all, and whilst it can penetrate standard counter measures that the civilians know of - the Russians have not been allowed to develop a new super weapon against whilst there is no defence.
What type of bullshit is this? Get women out of the military. Make it a group of men with one goal again. If our military is woke, we are doomed.
The concern with Hypersonic missiles isn’t them taking out ships, it’s striking the mainland without defensibility. They are nuclear capable.
Leveling a few blocks in Manhattan permanently is far more effective than taking out an aircraft carrier
Not true at all. Perpetual war due to entangling alliances squanders a nation’s blood and treasure, leaving it vulnerable to attack. The Afghanistan war made America 20 trillion dollars poorer than it would have been otherwise, and destroyed the lives of thousands of young men. We are worse for it.
America should trade with as many countries as possible, but stay out of foreign wars.
Im not necesarrily concerned with woman in the millitary
Though I do wonder whether it would impact squad morale if everyone is focused…
My qualm is… lowering fitness standards for women in combat units to fit diversity quotas… as has been done
Feelings don’t matter when someone is shooting at you… the vast, vast majority of women won’t be able to meet the initial criteria. Those who can are probably unicorns/rhonda rousey subtypes who can hold their own.
Not every woman is attractive… you’ve got some fairly masculine women out there.
And also… your moms are together… great… you stood up for gay rights! Hurrahhh!!! How does this have anything to do with anything?
Lol the ad had like 4k likes and 80k dislikes.
If you’ve ever been in a solely male space and a woman came in, no matter how attractive, you know how it affects squad morale. The adaptation of fitness standards to meet mediocrity is just the icing on the cake. I don’t know why we still pretend that women and men are the same or are able to do the same. Maybe a war is needed to change that shit again.
Weak men create hard times.
Edit: I don’t want to derail the thread. It’s just this mentality that led to Putin taking advantage of our weakness. Men who don’t accommodate are always stronger, Putin and Xi know this. The fate of Ukraine decides about the fate of Europe
How many Americans would rather fight a war than pay $200 to fill the tank of their $60k suv that they drive on paved roads exclusively? Or wear a jacket inside on a winters day?
I fear that the kind of sanctions needed, will be deemed unbearable by the American electorate due to greed. We are generations removed from war that affects our whole society, but most everyone knows financial insecurity from the recent great recession.
War from the west is not needed. Crippling sanctions will do the trick, but will we realize in time how many magnitudes worse war is than losing some creature comforts temporarily?
Oh yeah, fuck Putin.
I agree that war should be avoided, but I’d also caution against statements like this. Costs of living have risen dramatically and have disproportinately affects low income individuals. It’s not just “creature comforts”
Much higher gas prices can quickly turn into a choice between losing job bc lack of affordable transportatation (US public transit is shit) or cutting back on other necessities to afford gas
I very much doubt that Russia will go nuclear. The cold war did not go that way after decade of tension. It seems unthinkable that Russia would do that. For a start - it would end his life within hours as the USA/UK/France all launched their weapons. Also the range on those weapons is not unlimited. So they would need to mobilise to the middle of the Atlantic to launch.
I think the biggest “risk” is a strike against a ship. This is the Russian “something you have never dealt with” line. It would assert a level of dominance. But would not result in the total nuclear destruction of his country / world. Just an opinion. But again - I feel that there is no way the USA / UK / Nato has let a new super weapon develop with no counter measures.
He doesn’t have to. Just the threat will make Biden shit his pants and do nothing. We are going to wait a month until the shooting is over and Ukraine is no more to see if our sanctions are working.
The Russian economy is the size of the Florida economy for a closer reference.
I love that America’s options are supposedly war and sanctions. ![]()
I guess not being involved in something that has nothing to do with us isn’t an option, because Domino Theory or something.
No shit quote of the day:
Macron says there was ‘duplicity’ from Putin in their conversations
French President Emmanuel Macron has said Vladimir Putin had been duplicitous in his conversations with him, discussing the details of the Minsk agreements over the phone while preparing to invade Ukraine.
“Yes, there was duplicity, yes there was a deliberate, conscious choice to launch war when we could still negotiate peace,” Mr Macron told reporters after an EU summit in which he said France would add its own sanction to an EU package.
