On a personal note, I have chosen to directly mentor and support under-represented STEM majors (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) for a large part of my academic career. I am from SoCal, and left Caltech as a bright-eyed professor at an East Coast private University that was largely white, especially in the hard sciences and engineering. We would bring in a cohort of first generation college students, and I was involved in mentoring them and advising them. As an organic chemistry professor, I’m used to the “weed out” class for pre-meds and the unfortunate realization for many that they won’t be competitive for Med School.
I was always shocked that for many of these underrepresented students, competing in a difficult class wan’t their biggest worry: it was comments like those from Zeb that criticizes traits associated with their ethnicity. It really opened my eyes to what these students hear and have to deal with, and how it affects them. Zeb, you’re comments don’t affect me and that’s not what makes me angry; I am a white PhD, head of a department at an elite University (now I’m back in Cali for 2 years, after spending my first 13 years in academia on the East). In NorCal, it is certainly different than it was in the Mid Atlantic states, in that there are far more traditionally underrepresented groups in the sciences and University overall, but your comments still sting.
Now, Zeb, if I’m mistaken and you’ve made similar negative comments about white women “plastic faces; botox; bleached blonde; etc…” than let me right now offer my sincerest apology.
Democrats may be cheering this, but they’re doing it from the sidelines. They aren’t driving any of the investigations - they can’t. This refrain that “the Democrats will pay for taking us down this road!” makes no sense.
They are, huh? By doing what - making Republicans issue subpoenas?
Wow, Democrats really are quite powerful. They’re in a Congressional minority and don’t control the White House, are disorganized with no real national leadership - but they’re forcing investigations into all this Russia-Trump stuff.
How does the minority party apply pressure to a Republican controlled SCOTUS, POTUS, and Congress again? I genuinely don’t understand the logic of any R complaining about Dem interference when they control every branch of Govt.
In Raj’s and Zeb’s fantasy world, all bad news for Republicans are lies conjured up by Democrats - all-powerful ones, apparently.
Democrats on Capitol Hill couldn’t organize a well-attended breakfast meeting at this point, but they are manipulating the levers of Congressional committees to bring down Trump with fake claims.
Well to be fair, Obama (the Nigerian born Muslim ISIS creator) is still probably to blame for all of this. 1 party controlling all 3 branches of govt and the large majority of states doesn’t REALLY give you power, the media being on your side does.
