…but we were all assured Trump was very different and he would MAGA by not selling out American interests.
Color me shocked - shocked - that was a fabrication.

The president’s son-in-law and adviser is under FBI scrutiny in the Russia probe, but is not known to be a subject of the investigation.
If you think about it, it’s nothing but bizarre that Kushner is in a position of such influence. I mean, who the hell is this guy anyway? By dint of what training and/or experience is he qualified to shape the policies of the United States? This guy is in charge of, let’s see: dealing with the opioid epidemic; brokering peace between Israel and the Palestinians; and reorganizing the government. How on earth is he qualified to tackle any of these things?
So far as I can tell, he has exactly one qualification, that being the maiden name of the woman he married.
If anyone is wondering who the deep state is they’re people in government just below the people at the very top who work to facilitate the political goals of the donor class - Saudis, Jewish lobby/Israelis and individual donors like Zuckerberg and Bezos.

Plus, Apple starts lobbying on autonomous vehicles.
That was a bigly misread on Trumps part. There’s a lot of stuff in business and penny ante politics that can get shmoozed over with casual “but he’s a good guy” conversations, but not at this level.
Its not the misdeed that gets ya. Its the cover up.
Yeah, I actually do think that is a plausible explanation for his talks. If there’s one thing he is not, it’s a politician versed in the law and methods of DC. He’s shown a number of times (in my personal opinion with disastrous results, but opinions are like assholes) that he has approached his administration and other heads of state like he would in real estate. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say he probably tried that here too.
Problem here is the firing of Comey after the fact. I don’t have an issue with him approaching Comey and saying “hey, he’s a good guy, you think you could ease up?”…well actually that’s not true–I have an issue with it, but in the grand scheme of everything he’s done I don’t think that kind of conversation should be the one he hangs on. It’s really possible he was going into “corporate schmooze” mode. But then he fired Comey. Even if there wasn’t any criminal intent behind the conversation that shit just looks bad. And could bite him in the ass.
I don’t subscribe to the ‘perjury is perjury is perjury’ argument.
This is where we differ. I do subscribe to that where my head of state and elected officials are concerned. Should it have been a federal issue in the first place? No way. So it wasn’t about what he did for me.
I’m old enough to remember when it was a priority for us to elect a President that made an unfriendly nation’s first instinct to be “holy shit, just got elected - playtime’s over. He’s someone to be feared and respected.”
Instead, we have Russians - Russians, people - looking at our President and his team and thinking how can we outfox these useful idiots to gain power?
Reagan is rolling over in his grave.
As am I. I just…fuck. The only way you win in geopolitics is to be feared and respected. You don’t even need to be hawkish. But you DO have to be respected.

I have to disagree with you on this one. It’s pretty much normal for the son-in-law of the president to have a myriad functions and responsibilities. Nothing out of the ordinary here, it’s common practice, as can be seen from the links below.
After all, we have to judge the Trump family by “Central Asian dictatorship” standards…

A Tajik government official who also is the son-in-law of President Emomali Rahmon has denied having any links to a private firm that collects tolls on a major road in Tajikistan

Already touted as a future Kazakh president, Forbes Kazakhstan magazine has now crowned Timur Kulibayev the country's most influential businessman.

Also high on my list of favorites (just behind “Who knew healthcare could be so complicated?”) was Trump’s statement (referring to Jared): “If you can’t produce peace in the Middle East, no one can.” What?I

And one related thing I can’t figure out - the (arguably) second most powerful person in DC is a young, unqualified aristocrat. Why aren’t the “populists” that support Trump crying foul? Where are the pitchforks?

Oh they have full faith. He’s going to bring back coal jobs. He’s going to get that wall built. He’s not going to interfere overseas (he just had to drop a few bombs to make sure people know he still had them). He’s going to save us money by staying in the White House and having his wife move in. Ignore the fact that he has already spent more taxpayer money on vacations than Obama did in his first three years (remember Obama the evil golfing president).

All true H, but then again Trump has been President about four months. Trump may do some or all of those things we just don’t know yet do we? And while we are on the topic. Are you as upset with Obam’s broken promises over his two terms in office?
And I know you are smart enough not to ask what those promises were.
Trump may do some or all of those things we just don’t know yet do we?
We already know he golfs and vacations a lot. Don’t really have to guess there.
Ditto on the Melanie thing. No guesswork required.
True, and like Obama we know he isn’t going to close Gitmo…
Ha!

Idk about that. With Trump’s track record he’s probably more likely to do the opposite of what he campaigned as. Then again, it probably depends on what version of Trump we’re looking at.
I guess if you take every position you’re always doing what you said you would.

I know exactly what you mean. Just like Obama declaring GW Bush unpatriotic for growing the debt to 9 trillion and claiming that as President he would lower the debt. And then…he more than doubled it.
Can you imagine that? He did the exact opposite of what he promised.
