Bench Press-shoulder not feeling good, worked up to 225x6 then done
Chest Supported Row-45#platesx3x6
External rotator swing to 90/90 - 35x2x8
EZ bar cable curl 120x2x12 S/S Neutral DB bench 65 x 2 x 15

Saturday Midday

Start at loosehead. I was front lineout lifter as well-we won all of our own throw-ins, stole 1 of opposition and disrupted 3 or 4.
Scrums were great, we wheeled nearly all of their put-ins, had no issues winning our own ball. My opposite in the scrums (tighthead) was a fattie, had 2 inches over me in height and was definitely over 300lbs, but once i was able to get my head under his sternum, and obviously keep my hips below his, he was fucked.
Real marshmallow, but was a good trial for me to solidify my technique and show off some of the work I’ve been putting in.
I only put in 45 minutes, was a road match so we were liberal with the substitutions. 58-0 win.

Sunday

No deep tissue-had super bowl crap going on, seriously disrupted my recovery efforts.
Upset about that, especially considering it was a shit game to watch

Glad to see the hard work is paying off.

Nothing can be sweeter than that; dominating your opponent.

Thanks bud, it was a great debut at prop and despite having over 50 penalties against us (not exaggerating, this ref was mildly braindead), we were able to win enough set piece that we dominated the tempo of the match. And I got the start this Saturday as well, stoked for my new endeavour.

Monday and Tuesday

No training, definitely felt a cold/flu coming on. Just went to work and went back to bed for both days, I think I was able to circumvent it.

I think I get these colds when I have miss out on regenerative efforts (deep tissue, etc.) as well as shortened sleep periods and excess booze. Easiest to correct is the booze so I will start there.

Wednesday - P.M.

After plenty of water, ZMA and sleep I felt much improved today and decided to re-engage training conservatively.

Bike tempo warm-up

Bike tempos - 2 x 10 x 40sec@ 120-130 RPM
Adtl 300 reps of low amplitude abdominals - 3 x 20dynamic side plank/side, 20 McGill curlups/side, 20 stir the pot on 55cm swiss ball

Thursday P.M.

Team training - medium intensity

Split squat front foot elevated - barx2x5/leg
Squat - work up to 305 2 x 3
Hip thruster bent knee, heels on bench - 135x2x12
Pullups - completed 1 pullup and my elbows felt like they were going to explode so that was it for the day.

I’m still feeling some effects of whatever cold I had, the work sets felt okay but overall I felt achy and shitty, had to shut it down. Couple more days and I should be back to 100% or close.

I’m sure you got your nutrition dialed in completely, so you’ll be back at it soon, the worse thing we all are guilty of is coming back from injury/illness to quickly.

Take it easy buddy.

Thanks bud, I’ve definitely been guilty of it before. Good luck with your training.

Great log, looks a lot like James Smith (the thinker’s) approach if he were to make a rugby training program. Is he an influence on your training?

He was the programme manager for the country of Portgual (15’s, 7’s, U-18, U-20, etc) for (I believe) 2 years. As well as consultant for athletes and rugby teams from Oz, to NZ to Aviva Premiership. So he is quite well-versed in the specific demands of rugby athletes.
He indeed does have a large influence on my training as he is the sport consultant I chose to hire for this journey.

Saturday Midday

Did not get the start, no clue why. I wheeled every single opposition put last week, all lineout lifts were perfect and we stole or disrupted nearly all of the opponents…I’m at a loss.

Anyway, came in for last 35 this past Saturday. We had similar success at the scrums although we played a military team and their strength was a bit higher than our previous opponent. I did not lift in lineouts but was at the back. We had success in the lineout drives, though. I had a couple great support runs on some winger breaks but was unable to cross the try line. I think it is the timing of my support run which is not affording me maximum velocity as I receive the offloads. overall I did not play at 100%, my mindset was disrupted from not getting the start. An area still in need of improvement-mental acuity regardless of circumstance. Another big win, 74-12.

Sunday

Deep tissue massage

Monday P.M. 2/10/2014

Incline treadmill - 10min @ 2.5mph @ 15% incline

Clapping Pushups - 4x3
1-Arm Floor Press - 65lbsx2x12 (1st time performing, will bump weight next week)
Bent over BB row - 205 x 4 x 8
Shoulder giant set - seated db front riase, seated db lateral raise, face pull x 3 x 8

Its all a mental thing. Use the excuse for not getting a start a way to prove to the coaches that they made a poor decision in not starting you. You got 35 minutes, should have been the best 35 you ever played because you played those with a vengeance not a chip on your shoulder.

Shrug it off and just focus on having your best game every time to step on the field, regardless of start or not.

Keep up the good work, don’t let up now, your just getting started.
Good luck bro.

I have dealt with selection issues in the past. Nothing makes me more angry and motivatedâ?¦ which I focus all the energy back into training and preparation.

Don’t let this get you down. Chin up, train harder and show the fuckers that they head made a big mistake!

Sorry to hear you didnt get the start mate.
Its a long gruelling season mind and although he got out of the blocks first, you’ll finish the stronger.

Thank you guys, that’s just what I needed to hear.
I have identified that area as something I need to improve upon in my mental training, but it’s huge to hear it from other folks as well that I am doing the right thing.

Cheers to you all and keep training hard!!
