If we’re going to talk about American rock n’ roll, we have to start with The King…
Dion and the Del Satins (after the Belmonts)…

haha… you gotta go check him out man… im tellin ya… I saw Bob Wayne and the Outlaw Carnies twice last week… he should be in your area soon… Andy Gibson from III’s Damn band is with him playing the banjo and a Telecaster… Its a bad ass show guaranteed!
nice post on " la grange above" that’s a sick version !
and i ask you will we ever see great rock shows again ? rock is in a sad state today. who can even fill a stadium today except for old bands ? the shins ? the killers ? the decemberists ? arctic monkeys ? the raconteurs ? good god today’s crop of bands are a bunch of anemic posers. how did this happen ? i’ll tell you how it happened : too much fucking porn and video games have sedated everyone into believing that going to see wilco is the equivilent of going to a rock show. i mean jesus fucking christ kids don’t even buy stereos any more !!!
this is a freaking rock show :
wake the fuck up and accept nothing less !!! and go buy some speakers will ya !!
when the guys on stage can get 100,000 people to a joyfully sing on a morbid lyric like " when the dogs do find her " you can be sure you’re at a rock show.
look at that freaking crowd !
when the guitarist is playing a double neck and the singer is a dude looks like a lady it could be a rock show:
Here’s some metal for you…from the masters.
And my favorite performance from this concert in Russia…
The Russian police/security cracking skulls adds a little to the performance as well!

I agree with this for the most part. Part of the problem is today’s big bands just don’t “rock”. While Wilco is pretty good, and The Killers have their moments, neither one really rocks you.
STP rocks you. Metallica rocks you. Even The Roots rock you. And back in the day, Run DMC would rock you. “Plush” and “King of Rock” make me wanna get up. “Jesus etc.” and “Mr. Brightside” don’t do that to me. It’s just such a different style. Apparently, that’s what kids today want.
Truly, the masters.

i sortof think kids don’t want music today. they just want background wallpaper. stp sold something like 17 million records in the u.s… meanwhile wilco’s best record, yankee hotel foxtrot, hasn’t even sold a million in FIVE YEARS since it was released. but they sure get the press and the reputation. why i don’t know.

The problem is that music like that is what really sells over in The States. You can absolutely still go to a rock show here in Europe.
I’m taking on Hellfest in France this Summer and the line-up is un-fucking believable:
Slayer
Korn
Megadeth
Dream Theater
Emperor
Mayhem
Neurosis
Immortal
Hatebreed
Cannibal Corpse
Brujeria
Converge
Mastodon
There are about another 70 or so bands as well, the full line up is here:
http://www.hellfest.fr/index2_en.html
A fair few of those bands are American, however more often than not they pull bigger crowds in Europe so they tour here more frequently.
