Rob's Natty Bodybuilding Log / Q&A

I’m a closet Ferris fan. Listened to every podcast, some multiple times, and read all the books.

Since listening, I’ve exponentially improved my life.

Which ones? “Mr. Money Mustache”? :heavy_dollar_sign::hipster:

Completely forgot about this until started up a podcast this morning.

My favorites, off the top of my head, are:
Josh Waitzkin and Derek Sivers - they have several
Ep. 44, 56, 60, 63, 80, 81, 85, 86, 88, 102, 107, 109, 117.

That should get you started. There’s a bunch more I’d listen to multiple times.

Hey Rob hope all is good,

Thought I would ask a question in here as this says it’s a Q/A thread. If you think it’s best to move it to your most recent log then that’s cool.

When hitting a back double bicep pose what are your cues? How do you make the biceps more visible?

I’ve been practicing a few poses, nothing more than just for fun, but when I hit this pose it seems my biceps just disappear! Could just need more arm mass or maybe being leaner would help them pop, but they are okay and fairly lean so I thinking if it could be down to displaying them wrong.

@kd13 thanks for posting! All good to post here, I get the notifications so I’ll always see a post on this forum.

Great question on the RDB pose. I know you asked about biceps specifically; but first and foremost, I always think from the ground up. Planting the balls of the feet, and getting a good pulling sensation and flex in the hamstrings. Lats should feel wide, and like you’re trying to flex in the same manner you would when executing a lat pull down. Shouldn’t feel like you’re trying to squeeze your shoulder blades together. For the biceps specifically, rotate the wrist/fist in towards your face so you can maximize the peak, and also think about a little tension in the delt and brachialis. Do you work the brachialis regularly with hammer curls/cross body curls etc? A lot of folks focus on numerous curl variations and hit the bicep peak, but often the brachialis is tossed in at the end or ignored. I read this article a couple years ago and implemented these techniques for a while, which definitely helped the RDB pose.

The RDB pose really exposes full bicep development. Also keeping in mind your biceps will look bigger with some nice hanging, sweeping triceps below!

Hope this helps, please feel free to post anytime. If you want to post a pic of this pose, I’d be happy offer some further thoughts.

Edit: posing is a GREAT way to build a solid MMC and will help your training a lot. Really thinking about that while training and posing will help both aspects. When you hit a pose and really try to isolate specific parts of each muscle, and duplicate that when you’re training that muscle, you should see (and feel) some solid growth as well.

Great stuff thanks very much. I feel I now have got the hang of making my back look good, not squeezing shoulder blades together definitely does the trick. The arm situation, still not looking good! I always hammer or cross body curl first, read John Meadows talk about that. Here is a picture, bit close up but it’s the only place I could prop the phone up.

Your logs were the first place I looked for pictures which would give me an idea of how it should look. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

@kd13 thanks for posting, very helpful!

Please keep in mind there are many great contributors on this site with great knowledge, lots of incredible physiques, and I’m just giving my own thoughts based on personal experience.

You’ve got a great foundation, are very meticulous and will no doubt continue to make progress. Currently, I think you just need to give your body more time in developing more muscle, and eventually getting leaner. You’ve got a good structure, wide lats compared to your waist. Ultimately, I think you need more arm development, and after a while, getting leaner will help show what you’ve got under the hood. Seeing things like a clear brachialis takes a very low body fat percentage. With your current level of mass, I think getting leaner would show those details more. However, unless you’re planning on competing in the very near future, I’d recommend staying around your current level of conditioning and focus on adding more mass overall, and you can focus on your arms if you want to.

After my first year of competing in 2 shows, it was easy to see what needed improvement, and for me, it was shoulders and arms. They were lagging significantly behind my chest, back, lats and quads. For the following year, I modified my split to hit shoulders and arms twice a week, and I believe that played a big factor in helping to bring them up. Granted, I’m still not happy with them, I mean, we all want bigger arms right?! But, here are a couple pics to illustrate the leanness factor, with and without tan. Note the first pic is at the start of my prep, and the last two are towards the end, so you can see how different everything looks with more conditioning.

Hope this helps, please let me know if I can elaborate further on anything! In my prep log I detailed my workouts if you want to check out what the split was.

Thank you very much, the plan is to spend another couple of years adding more mass, then possibly looking at doing a physique show. You are 100% right though I need more mass overall.

Arms could always be bigger as always! From the front they stand out as a strength though but look poor from behind. Not doing any direct arm work at the moment but plan on blasting then again soon.

Can clearly see in the pics you provided the difference that extra lean makes. Not planning on leaning up at any point soon, will hopefully slowly build up to around 85kg, maybe then I will carry enough mass.

Will be looking over your training again from the logs. Your transformation is probably the best I’ve seen on this site and it’s great most of the process has been logged!

Thanks again.
