Riddle22's Training Log

Here are the details of my upcoming meet and my planned openers:

It’s on 2/28 and it’s APF sanctioned. I’ll be competing in the junior 198s wearing a belt, wrist wraps, and knee wraps. My planned attempts are:

Squat
1 - 430
2 - 460
3 - ?

Bench
1 - 285
2 - 300
3 - ?

Deadlift
1 - 540
2 - 565
3 - ?

The 2nd attempts are flexible, depending on how my openers feel. I never plan 3rd attempts because I’m usually going for a PR on my 2nd and I wait to see how that lift turns out.

I weighed in this morning and made the 198 class. I was hovering at a little over 200 all day yesterday so I cut my water intake last night and didn’t eat or drink anything before weighing in this morning. I was 198.5 at first before i stripped down to just my boxers so I was definitely cutting it close.

The meet will be tomorrow and i’ll post tomorrow night with results.

2/28/09 Meet Recap

Today didn’t exactly start off too well but I ended up doing ok.

I opened with 430 on squat as planned and got that fairly easily. I moved to 460 on my second and missed it in the hole. I took it again on my third but stalled about halfway up. I think that my knee injury caused me to lose alot of squat strength. It wasn’t hurting today, but I missed 3 weeks of squatting right before the meet so I definitely wasn’t at my best.

On bench I opened with 285 and it was a grinder but I got it. After that I knew I wasn’t going to do very well on bench either so I went up a modest 10 lbs to 295. I stalled halfway up on both my 2nd and 3rd with that weight.

Deadlift went a little better. I got my 540 opener fairly easily and moved to 560 on my 2nd. That was probably the slowest deadlift ever, but I got it. I went to 575 on my 3rd just for the hell of it but missed it at lockout.

So I ended up going 430/285/560 for a 1275 total. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but it is a PR total.

I know what I need to work on for next time. On squat I just need to keep doing what I’ve been doing. I was my strongest ever on squat before my knee injury and I think I would have hit some huge weights if it wasn’t for that. On bench I really need to work on my technique. I always stall about 3/4 of the way up which shouldn’t be happening on a raw bench. My tricep strength is there, I think it’s just my techique holding me back. As long as my arms are, it’s really hard to keep the bar in the correct path. For deadlift I need to hammer some rack pulls.

I never do those and it shows because I’m alot stronger off the floor than at lockout. I could feel my traps and upper back starting to give out on the last two attempts and I think some heavy rack pulls should do the trick.
