Kind of stumped me because its true, the only fat asians you see are the ones in north america because their lives are ruined by fast food restaurants.
So whats the deal, is rice good or bad to eat?
You have to look at the whole of their diet. Yeah, they eat a lot of rice. They also eat more fresh food, and less processed foods.
But, yeah, I’d say rice is better than cookies/muffins/etc, and I’d even suggest switching rice in for pasta/etc.

i live in malaysia where we have all three of the cuisines, chinese, indian and malay.
a cup of cooked rice is only 200 calories so even if you have rice three times a day that’s only 600 calories - chuck in some veggies and a few pieces of meat and you will probably get to over a 1000 calories… which is not that much… most people DON’T have a bowl of rice at every meal…
here are the calorie counts for some popular cheap meals
prawn noodles - aprox 250-290
wan tan mee - 450
nasi lemak biasa - 290
roti canai - 350 calories
these are full meals for most people…
don’t forget serving sizes are a lot smaller here.
we just have fewer people who are in the obese category.
we still have fat/chubby/round people… but i doubt if those people are MASSIVELY unhealthy…
we have much much fewer of those scary large ones…
i’d say that on the whole in asia you would consider someone like this fat:
and compared to most slimmer asians she’s probably bigger…
but then you really don’t see a lot of people the same shape as the lady in the blue tshirt in asia.

Pretty much my entire family came from malaysia, so I know what all those dishes are, but you may want to clear them up for the others on here. Is the roti canai including curry and meat? Didn’t realise how non-calorie dense the dishes I’ve grown up with are

that’s the product of a genetic disorder and no, its not obesity. i think its due to no leptin production.
actually i believe that is the product of the Michelin Man bangin some asian chick
HAHAHAHA
I think some asian babies can just be like that (though the one on the pic looks way older than a baby). I have a friend who looked like that as a baby - his mum had to open the folds of his fat to wash him properly!

As far as the body is concerned rice is a nutritionally devoid sugar source. If that’s what you’re looking for, then they’d be good.
The next point: there are fat Asians, especially in the cities. There are very few fat farmers anywhere. If you spent 8-10 hours a day in a rice field, and then ate 3-4 cups of rice a day, you wouldn’t get fat: that has to do with life-style and portions, not the food itself.
When your body sees that sugar, it could be from a doughnut: if you eat it every night and then sit in front of the TV, it may make you fat. If you eat it before you run a marathon, probably not.
OP, i’m going to try to give you a real answer rather than a bunch of ethno-weird shit non-answers.
chose brown rice over white. brown still has the good stuff (vitamins/minerals), the white stuff has all the good stuff stripped away. brown is also easier on insulin, white is high on the glycemic index.
just think of it like the difference between a whole multi grain bread vs. Wonder Bread.
If you look at the nutrition data for brown rice vs white rice, the difference is very small. Brown rice has SLIGHTLY more fiber and vitamins. Then go look up the GI or GL – they are very similar. The differences are so small, I personally don’t care about them, so I eat whichever type of rice tastes better with the rest of my meal.
The small differences in B vitamins might matter if rice is THE staple of your entire diet, as with some Japanese. It is not the staple of my diet so I don’t worry about it.
The same is not true about wheat: there are dramatically more vitamins, minerals, and fiber in whole wheat flour than in white flour.
