Thread number 3 for the day is in regards to removing a pain in my caker white ass smell from our new basement.
The basement itself will make a great entertainment space once I throw down some shag carpeting, thick velvet wallpaper and grow a killer creeper stache, but in the meantime, all I have is berber carpeting with a stubborn cat litter smell.
Aside from tracking down the previous owner and opening up a chainsaw of furious rights on their pumpkins, what can I do to remove this new friend of mine?
I had a professional cleaner come in and clean the carpets, including a “heavy duty deodorizer” (that looks like it’s spelled funny, and i wish i had that option with some girls i’ve gone down on), and the smell went away - for a day.
Do i have any option other than tearing out what is otherwise very nice berber? Someone suggested tossing down a shitload of baking soda and leaving it for a day before vaccuming it all up. Any good?
Please help me make my basement smell like morning rain.

I’m pretty sure you are not going to get rid of the smell until you get rid of the filthy carpet. You may be able to mask the smell for a while, but it’ll come back. Too bad you didn’t notice this issue before closing on the house.

ah, i’d still have closed. not enough to trump the value of a divorcing couple wanting to sell as quickly as possible. i’m sure the complete slob responsible for the fucking smell down there played SOME role in their romantic demise.
You can try a product called Nature’s Miracle. It is an enzyme that claims to go in and actually metabolize the organic material. Cat urine is notoriously hard to remove. It is a little pricey, but you can get it by the gallon at Petsmart or Petco kind of places. It is the only product I have found that actually works on cat urine, since it removes the odor causing material, does not just cover it up.
Also, depending on how new the berber is, unless it is wool, artificial carpets outgas, and the smell can actually smell like urine and a lot of other things.
If you can’t get the cat urine smell out, it might be best to pull up the carpet, then swab the concrete with nature’s miracle. Seal it with concrete paint.
Get some vinegar and a steam carpet cleaner. The vinegar (acetic acid) should dissolve the pee crystals and then you just have to suck it all up with the steam cleaner. Baking soda does a good job neutralizing the liquid part of the urine for more fresh stains, but it does nothing for removing the crystalized stinky parts.

LOL, no doubt. If the smell is that bad, the underlay and not just the carpet was probably soaked. Maybe they never cleaned the piss and just let it dry.
Personally, all I’d be thinking about is the mold and bacteria and crap growing under the carpet, even if it’s all in my head. Rip it out and buy an area rug.
