We’re not even sure whatever lives down there will eat the bait we use - why even use bait at all? For all we know the creatures down there are vegetarians.
I think just throwing a big ass trap down there and leaving it for a week or so would work. We would just have to get lucky and hope we catch something.
Too much paralysis by analysis. Just dredge up some fish. Whatever survives the trip up, we fry it up in some butter and Old Bay seasoning and find out what tastes good.

This is a coconut crab. They are the largest land-living arthropod in the world. They can crack coconuts, which are pretty similar to skulls.
the coconut crab is the scariest thing in this entire thread and it doesnt even live under water. That fucking thing could crawl in bed with you.

nothing that lives that deep could survive the surface or the trip up.And all the fish down there either eat other fish or suck the shit off the bottom. If you were to pull say a barrel eye fish or and angler it would probably just looklike a wad of nast goo.It would have died and body become lifeless.I dont think it would stay hard like say a salmon or trout.
I’m thinking a smallish submersible with some high ass powered lighting and multiple cameras. I’m sure we can build something to withstand high pressure, Not sure if remote control would be feasable. I’m sure radio waves would have trouble penetrating that deep. But maybe something else.
Just program the thing let it swim down, swim around for a few days taking video of everything it comes across and then swims back up. You could rinse repeat this and probably find 100 new species each trip.

Be tough to be a vegetarian where there is no vegetation, just sayin.

Do we know for a fact there is no vegetation? Scientists have discovered vegetation in places they never expected it to be able to survive. At least one of the fish down there must be a vegetarian to be at the bottom of the carnivore’s food chain, right?

Not 100% about the vegetation, but there is no light for photosynthesis. Doesn’t have to be a vegetarian to be prey, just edible. There are plenty of predators that are also prey. They could be subsisting on bacteria from vents or whatever else is smaller than them.
You assholes can get technical all you want! This weekend I’m taking my rowboat out to the middle of the ocean and dropping a big, metal 10x10 trap attached to 35,000 feet of rope. When I catch enough sun I’m going to pull it back up and see what I’ve got.

What if your trap gets eaten?
I’ll consider that more of a victory than standing around holding my (infected) dick in my hand.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a rowboat or 35k feet of rope. So I’m out. You guys have fun.
