Religious Liberties Laws

What if they reject the concept of natural rights?

That is like saying you would argue with someone that thinks 2+2=68. You wouldn’t, not even on the internet.

Well maybe on the internet.

314k and climbing fast.

Just to clarify, the guy who thinks 2+2=68 is analogous to the guy who thinks natural rights don’t exist?

Yes.

Why’s that?

367k… That’s 50k in 30 mins.

It’s going viral…

Because anyone that denies people were born to be free, etc, are in fact devoid of reality.

But on what basis can we determine that people were born to be free? This is something that I simply cannot wrap my head around, unless we go by what SexMachine wrote in some other thread that essentially came down to “natural right requires the belief in some higher power/being that have the authority to imbue us with certain things”.

That’s my problem. I do not believe in said higher being. As such, I find no particular reason to believe that humans have any natural rights. We only have legal rights, in such that we only hold as much power as we allow ourselves.

Note, this is not a tangent. I think DBCooper more or less hit the nail in the head with his post. This is fundamentally an issue of rights (be it natural or legal) colliding with one another, and I don’t think it’s a solvable issue unless people tackle the issue of which rights supersedes the other, etc.

You know, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if this was a calculated decision on the pizzeria’s part for publicity.

The bakery also got a flood of customers and quite a bit of moral support after the incident.

Though I’m not sure if the pizzeria planned to make quite this much money.

If we weren’t, would we even understand the concept, and would our ancestors have fought, sometimes giving their lives, for tens of thousands of years, across all civilizations for it?

When we think we have it, we’ll give up bits and pieces, when we don’t think we have it, we’ll fight until we have no breath in our lungs to get it.

That would be the biggest set of brass balls I’ve ever seen. Because one fo these days, one of the Tolerance Crusaders is going to make good on their death threats…

Where do we draw the line? What if a business owner claims his religion forbids him from washing his hands before handling your food, or someone who claims that his religion doesn’t allow him to follow proper sanitation disposal protocols? If there isn’t some modicum of sanity here, this can set a precedent that has unintended legal consequences.

One thing we don’t do is fine a Washington baker $1000 (or jail time for not paying) for refraining to bake a gay wedding cake because we’re skeered a non-hand washing religious restaurateur will come down the pike some day.[/quote]

That has been the elephant in the room since this whole thing started. What sky is falling outcome is going to materialise which is worse than those which are currently being experienced by devout business owners?

As an aside, I would like to say that Sloth has been consistently excellent in this thread.

I distinctly remember talking about death threats made to some party that would not be particularly sympathized on this board, and getting a response that said something like “I wouldn’t be surprised if they made up the claim to get sympathy” or some such.

Unfortunately, I forget the details. Otherwise I would just point to the thread.

In any case, people seem to make death threats over anything that annoys them these days. I’d be amazed if any of them made good on it.
