Rebirth of the Juggernaut: Brute Force and Ignorance (Part 1)

Track Run
1.5 miles
11:22

Notes: Think I’ve finally hit my baseline. This was just a 5 second drop from before. My legs seem to have caught up to my lungs. Fitness test in a week, Murph in 2.

General notes: Woke up at 195.4.

How are you organizing your training now? I see you’ve been running more often again, and still running 531. Just curious how your week looks now

It’s been a pretty easy transition for me. I’ve stopped all strongman conditioning and replaced it with running. So running 2-3 times a week. With the distance only being 1.5 miles, it doesn’t tax my recovery, so it hasn’t had to affect the rest of my training any.

Rest of it is still the same. 5/3/1 for press and bench. ROM progression for deads. Dealer’s choice for squats.

Any reason in stopping the strongman stuff? Not sure if I missed this in the log somewhere. I appreciate the responses. Really enjoy reading your log

I’ve got a physical fitness test with a 1.5 mile run on the 18th, and then I’ll be running the Murph crossfit workout on 25 May, so emphasis in training shifted to support that. After that, I’ve got a few shows that have piqued my interest, but nothing I’ve signed up for officially. I really want to get to Strongman Corp nationals, but there just aren’t a lot of those shows around, so I may end up crossing feds just to keep the fire going.

Notes: Another forum had a challenge for 20RM deads. This is close to that. Wanted to get it all done in one shot, but wasn’t quite in the cards. For doing it at the end of the workout, I’m ok with it.

GHR sit ups w/25lb plate behind head
2x8

Notes: Getting better about bringing this back into the programming, but still just feel like I spend a LOT of time on this day.

How high are your mats week to week?

That number I put in paranthesis in front of the mat pull indicates how many mats I’m using that week. So this last workout was a 5 mat pull. I’ll start with 7, and then scale down to the floor, removing a mat each week (skipping the 1 mat high week, just because it doesn’t seem worth engaging).

If you’re asking about the actual measurable height, I’m not too sure. I think the mats are 3/4" thick, but I’ve never actually taken the time to measure.

Yeah I meant the thickness. Thanks dude

Notes: I improved my mile time, at 7:18 vs 7:22 last time, but the wind picked up on those last 2 laps and it was like running in place. I’m definitely at the best I can do without specifically dedicating effort to improving my time (speed and tempo runs, longer distances, etc), and that’s fine with me. I’ll do my fitness test on thursday, do another run the sunday after that, and then Murph on thurs after that, and then probably be done running for a bit.

Woke up at 194.4. Cheat meal was a mother’s day brunch. Lots of bacon and other meats.

Hey man, read your most recent article within minutes of it being posted and I’ve read it several times since. I gotta say, that might be one of my favourite articles of all time. That being said though, it’s a bit of a bummer haha.

Do you ever wish you were better coordinated and less of an oaf? I’m guessing you probably tried and realised it wasn’t for you and thus just decided to embark on the life of an oaf.

Glad you enjoyed the blog post. I had fun writing bit. I honestly don’t see it as a bummer at all; it is just me knowing who I am an working within that framework.

Regarding coordination; I see it as inherently a genetic trait rather than a trainable quality. Some folks simply have a greater inherent ability to pick up physical skills than others. Some people are natural athletes, and can quickly learn a new sport or physical skill, and others simply aren’t. I can spend a lot of time and energy mastering a skill to be able to get better at it, but it doesn’t change the fact that I am an oaf. I can get my phsyical skills on pars with those who are naturally better, it just takes longer. It’d be nice to be better at it, but I suppose not being talented taught me how to work hard.

I have found that working hard is much better than natural talent.

As a guy who’s pretty good at a lot of things I think it’s fun to have talent :grinning:

By good, I mean better than most in terms of sports. And the standard is now rec league adult sports. On the flip side I’ve become a jack of all trades but master of none.

I could have played college sports in 3 or possibly 4 sports (different levels for each sport). Unfortunately, no one counseled me in my best opportunities so I chose incorrectly.

Where can I find this blog of yours?

I don’t think I’ve ever related to anything as much as point 20 in your most recent blog post man haha. Don’t give me that damn ball!

Ya, where’s the blog?

Also, I played 4 sports in HS, one college, but could not get the coordination to skip until freshman year in college.

I essentially was good at several movements in each sport.

Baseball - Swinging, catching throws at first
Soccer - goal keeping (I had a defender do all my kicks for me, because I couldn’t)
Basketball - post up, baby hook or turn and dunk.
Football - hit hard and run at the QB

Anything else and I was in unchartered territory.

@Biker in an ideal world, I’d have both, haha. But having never had one, I just have to fall back on the other.

@Frank_C and @dchris The name of the blog is “mythical strength” It’s a blogger site. I don’t think I can directly link it, but it should turn up if you search it.

@furo I think everyone terrible at sports has developed a similar strategy. I shoudl have also included that, generally, in a sport with man coverage, I typically find the OTHER non-athlete on the opposing side and enter into a gentlemans’ agreement with them. Basically, neither one of us will try to score, and neither one of us will run very fast, and we’ll both just take turns covering each other. Makes us look productive, haha.

Found your blog. Good stuff and I might start my own soon. I’ve considered writing out my thoughts in article format but don’t have anywhere to put them. Blogspot might be the answer.

I don’t know why I haven’t asked this sooner, but what’s the basis for your handle, T3hPwnisher?

My connection/interest/attraction to The Punisher is pretty simple. I’m a police officer. The Punisher skull is pretty prevalent in law enforcement circles. For me, it’s the idea that people get punished for their evil works. I wish everyone was actually held accountable for their crimes. Break into someone’s house and steal their stuff—punished. Armed robbery—punished. You get the idea. And because the world isn’t perfect (because humans are involved) I’ve adopted a bible verse to help me keep my sanity.

Nahum 1:3
The Lord is slow to anger but great in power; the Lord will not leave the guilty unpunished.

I tried to link it, but it got taken down. Had no idea we couldn’t directly post shit
