Rebirth of the Juggernaut: Brute Force and Ignorance (Part 1)

Not a training question

Any Podcasts you would recommend? I started listening to them during my rucks, and really enjoy it. Keeps my mind busy, and I can find some real good info. Ya definitely strike me as bit of an intellectual, given the comments on philosophy and whatnot. Thought maybe you would have a few good ones up your sleeve.

Cheers

Hey man,

I appreciate the kind words. I honestly can’t ever find any time to listen to a podcast. There are a TON of good ones out there apparently, but I’m totally out of the loop on them. Sorry I don’t have anything to go with on that.

You could try TheJuggLife and the Powercast. They’re both pretty good. That and Kale Beck’s starting strongman.

Just read your blog post and I can somewhat relate. I’ve a feeling that as time passes, I might relate to it even more. That being said, I would hardly consider any of them unhealthy.

On a scale of

sitting on your ass watching TV, never lifting a finger
to
eating a low caloric diet, ensuring you’ve 8 hours of sleep and mild exercise.

I’d say it’s pretty reasonable. That being said, I’d like to think that most of us here at T Nation have had to deal with situations where we were told we should stop lifting weights cause its ā€˜dangerous’ and we’re going to hurt ourselves.

As for the whole running into zombies ideas. I’ve had similar thoughts. I played rugby years ago(when I was tiny) and I recall myself constantly running head first into all the bigger guys, trying to brute force my way through them. I had some, albeit a limited amount, success with it. I’ve always wondered what would’ve happened if I was introduced to weight training earlier.

Anyways, yes.

"Our ancestors that went toe to toe with grizzlies ended up dying off before they could pass on their stupid genetics to future generations; survival of the fittest sometimes dictates understanding that discretion is the finer part of valor. "

This was absolutely mind blowing to me. I’ve never thought of it this way. I do wonder though, what would’ve happened if said ancestors who tried going toe to toe with the grizzlies survived and triumphed.

A lot of us would be capable of taking on grizzlies and surviving.

And, in all seriousness, we probably wouldn’t have developed into what we are today.

@T3hPwnisher Hey, just noticed you were from MT! Small town MT fella checkin’ in! Nice to see us represented haha

@furo MT (born and raised) is great, low cost of living for the most part, have to leave places to get to places (distances are measured in hours driven not miles haha) Wyoming (current resident) feels very similar as far as types of people (conservative, hard working, ranch types) although where I’m at is more like central and eastern MT and not like the mountains of home, God’s country right there!

@Benanything Thanks for the feedback. In full disclosure, I got approached by another website to write that article (slightly different from my normal stuff), so I thought I’d test it out on the blog.

There are definitely other unhealthy trends out there for sure, but the absence of moderation tends to be an indicator of unhealthy activities. Binge eating fast food and not moving is unhealthy, as is obsessive dieting and number chasing in the gym. Somewhere in the middle health and longevity is found. That said, if you make peace with not having health as a goal, there is no shame in doing what you do.

Regarding if our ancestors were different; the world would be a pretty awful place for most I imagine. The smartest among us survived and resulted in a thriving existance outside of the state of nature. It’s pretty much what Hobbes wrote about. As cool as it would be for the human race to be a bunch of badass grizzlybear killers, it would mean a life of constant war that was solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short.

@Despade I actually can’t claim to be from MT. I moved here in August. I’m originally from San Diego, but I’ve been all over these past few years.

Well hell…it’s a great place to live, I hope you’re in Western/Southwestern MT at least?

Yeah, out west. I’m enjoying it. Super mild winters, especially after having spent 5 years in northen central North Dakota.

Thanks for the response man! Sounds pretty idyllic to be honest. My American dream is an F150 and a small ranch somewhere like that. That’s not going to happen, but I definitely plan to visit!

Well these are the places to do it, especially with a little capital, and if you don’t mind drivin a bit to get somewhere there is land all over the place on the cheap. I’d recommend anywhere from Bozeman west, the Crazy Mountains start there if you’re coming from the east and the landscape just gets better and better, all the way through to northern Idaho.

5x136
3x166
3x191
5x216
4x216 (push press)
10x166 (continental and strict press)

Notes: Schedule is a little screwy, so trained in the evening. Goal was 6 for that topset, but this is still some manner of lifetime PR.

DB rows 105
5x10

Band pull aparts
5x20

Notes: Performed between sets of pressing

CIRCUIT (no rest)

15 pull-ups
20 bodyweight squats
20 dips
then back again

5 rounds

Notes: Total time was 11:45. To explain, I’d do the full circuit, then I’d work backwards to 20 bodyweight squats and 15 pull-ups, then forwards to 20 bodyweight squats and 20 dips. Basically used squats to buffer the upper body work. Ended up being 75 pull ups, 200 squats and 100 dips. Slight prep for Murph. Not awful, but not enjoyable.

General notes: Woke up at 193.2 this morning. Free of most aches and pains. Pinky is still swollen.

Notes: Schedule is all messed up, but things moved smooth. I had a 15th rep in me for the topset, but I could feel my right glute going the way that my left had gone, so I gave it a rest. Thinking I might actually need to spend some time training them specifically, as I seem to be running into specific issues.

Notes: Knees aren’t a big fan of heavier loads with all the extra running, so I’m keeping things light and maximizing fatigue. I like what I’ve come up with on this stripset; still haven’t hit that goal of a full 30 on the final set.

General notes: Woke up at 192.4 this morning. Big drop; skipped lunch yesterday due to work. Still need to get in some ab work for today.

5x181
3x201
3x226
1x226 (push press)
8x181 (continental and strict press)

Notes: REALLY wanted that 4, but been training a lot of days in a row, and hit this workout up right after mowing the lawn. Energy reserves were just tapped. Still a very significant PR, and a sign that it’s time to reset the training max.

Pleased with that FSL set. I think I started this cycle with 181 for 10, so to come that close on a back off set is a sign that things are moving really strong.

Pull ups
5x11

Band pull aparts
5x20

Notes: Hitting those pull ups with chin way over. Still prepping for Murph. All of this done between presses.

General notes: Woke up at 194.0. Training schedule is all jacked up to accommodate travel and work, but it’s moving along well.

That’s not just good considering a PR, but because that’s a strong ass overhead in general.

Definitely turning a weakness into a strength, good job man.

Much appreciated Vinny. For press, strict press was never much of a weakness for me. What I really need to do is get my leg drive up to par. I think, once I can do that, I can start really being dangerous in this event.

Always means a lot to get pressing kudos from you dude.
