Rebirth of the Juggernaut: Brute Force and Ignorance (Part 1)

Thanks @simo74 ! It was a good reminder to myself as well.

Speaking of, meant to log that I’ve been undereating and it showed today. My physical is looming, and subconsciously I’m sure I’m trying to play the bloodwork game while also trying to play the weight gain game. Less than 4 weeks: I gotta finish strong.

PM WORKOUT (1430)

30 thrusters w/135
Time: 3:15

Rest of daily work

Notes: Time is getting really solid on that. Perfect feeder workout after Deep Water squats. Really forces me through the ROM.

Forgot to log that, during press workout, I was doing pull aparts and chins between sets.

DEEP WATER INTERMEDIATE Week 3, Workout 3

AM WORKOUT (0305 natural wakeup)

Log cleans 150 w/3:50 between sets
1x12
8x11

5x10 band pull aparts spread during rest periods

Axle shrugs against light bands
1x104

Chins
3xF

Notes:Got about 4.5 hours of sleep after coming home from Tang Soo Do in the evening and starting this up. TSD itself was pretty cool: got to learn some new one setp self defense and we got a new student that’s a transfer from the Netherlands. High ranking dude, which also means there’s now one other male in the class aside from myself and the instructor.

Wore my 1980s style fingerless lifting gloves for the log cleans. Helped keep my hands from tearing.

It was incredibly humid in the garage this morning, and then the skies opened up and I could hear the rain pounding even over the sound of music. Definitely need to watch my salt intake, because I was pouring sweat. I was lacking in “pop” on the cleans, but given my fatigued state that’s understandable.

Officially registered for the competition yesterday: I am signed up as a 181lb competitor for Midwest’s Strongest Man 2021. Events/weights as follows.

Viking press: 255
Car deadlift: Car
H-Stone carry: 325
Axle Squat: 375

Just realized how heavy that stone carry is. In general, this is my kinda show. Static, reppy, low technique, heavy carry. Still gonna run Deep Water Intermediate to the end, then dial in the diet a bit. DoggCrapp might actually be the right prescription so that I have more days to spend drilling my carries. SVR II would work just fine too though. Too many avenues for success: never a bad thing.

hurr durr did your boyfriend something something

I always appreciated the irony of being catty about what someone is wearing while they lift weights and acting like THAT makes you more “manly”

This style of glove is awesome. i used to wear gloves in college because all the knurling was gone from all the bars in the weight room and the extra friction in the grip was necessary.

Car deadlift: Car

Lol

Brought a pair of these gloves to my first day of high school football weight training. Made it approximately 30 seconds before my head coach made me throw them away. Note: not take off, actually throw into the garbage.

Exciting news about the show. Never done a squat with an axle, wonder how that would change up the feel of everything

@cyclonengineer They’re always good to have on hand (pun not at all intended but now I’m super proud of it). It was a good look back then, haha.

@tlgains Hah, it seems obvious, but the other categories are truck and tires for the female competitors

@atlas13 Man, how goofy, haha. Axle squat’s biggest issue is the complete lack of flex and collar spin: it’s gonna wanna rip right off the back. Thankfully I think my slow squatting style will be an asset there.

PM WORKOUT (1500)

21 Tabata protocol rounds (20 seconds on/10 seconds off) of the following circuit

Round 1: Stone of steel shouldering
Round 2: 40kg KB swings
Round 3: Burpees

Notes: This was awesome. Really blew me out quick. I want to get back in the habit of picking heavy stuff off the floor, since it looks like that’s how the H-stone is gonna go. All the work with overhead off the floor paid off, as I didn’t skip a beat on it. Rest of it was a solid fatigue inducer.

Ohhh, the burn. My last few shoulder workouts I’ve either put them first as pre-exhaust or last as a scorched earth maneuver.

Right on.

I’ve worn my Mechanix search gloves a few times at the gym. Keeps my hands from getting chewed up too bad. People either think I’m a hardass or a dumbass. Either way is fine with me

@SkyzykS It’s amazing how little resistance it takes to make that movement so effective. A hard lesson learned as I reach my “masters athlete” years, haha.

@kleinhound I need to just spring for something like that. Be nice for the winter here too. My hands are already a horror show; any chance I can get to spare them, haha. And yeah, it’s amazing how much people care about handwear at the gym.

DEEP WATER INTERMEDIATE Week 3, Workout 4

AM WORKOUT (0310 wake up via alarm)

Axle Bench Press 256
1x10
1x9
1x8

Close grip axle bench press 216
3x10

(3) Incline DB bench 100s
1x9
1x8
1x7+burnout set of dips

Dips
1xF
1xF+burnout set of push ups

Push ups
1xF
1xF+burnout w/slingshot+burnout w/catapult

4 rounds no rest of
10 KB swings
10 chins

Notes: 3:00 between sets of benching/2:00 between dips/push ups. 5x10 pull aparts spread through out the workout. Once again, just some ennui with this workout. It’s hard to get up at 0310 JUST to bench. I’m seeing solid progress, and it helps my pressing, so that’s cool, but still…

My shoulder is feeling better. Right patella hurts much. Floating pain.

Back is pretty fried from the log yesterday. Conditioning needs to be more quad focused for a bit. Got deads on the horizon and I plan to crush it. Golden opportunities for big eating this weekend.

PM WORKOUT (1500)

100 thrusters w/95lbs
5 KB swings w/40kg bell every time I set the bar down

Time: 13:12

Notes: This is awesome. Something I came up with after reading similar WODs. Burpees would work just fine in place of swings of course, but I got Juarez valley soon: I’ll do enough burpees.

DEEP WATER INTERMEDIATE Week 3, Workout 5

AM WORKOUT (0555 natural wake up) FASTED

10 KB swings
5 chins
10 swings
5 dips
repeat until 50 chins and 50 dips had been done, do swings to finish out the 15 minutes

Accomplished all remaining daily work

Notes: Just something to kick start my Saturday. Planning on running a light/reppy Juarez Valley today so that I’m not totally broken come deadlifts on Monday.

@T3hPwnisher awesome stuff here as always.
Do you still recommend the Inzer lever belt? I think it’s time I get a belt.
And do you see any drawback to me getting the 10mm? Just seems like it would be lighter and break in faster. I don’t know what the extra thickness would provide as I’ve never used a belt.

The litigious person in me is quick to clarify that I pretty much NEVER recommend anything: I just say what works for me, haha. I like the Inzer belt so much I got a second one so I have one I can wear without a soft belt underneath and one I can wear with a soft belt.

Regarding break in time: is there a particular reason you need to break in the belt faster? I’ve had my original 13mm since 2011, and I’d say it’s still not “broken in”, which is what I prefer. I got a 13mm belt from elitefts that was “pre-broken in” and it felt awful. Basically zero support, couldn’t even tell I was wearing a belt. I like the 13mm because it makes me feel bulletproof.

Roger that. But are you also saying you need a soft belt underneath for comfort? Again, total rookie to the belt game here, so that sounds like a pita.
But I’m not going to ask for your recommendation and then say “fuck you that’s stupid” lol. Just trying to make a good choice for me.

Does that sound like me? Haha. The soft belt is for extra support. Great for pressing. Also keeps from getting pinched on log and axle cleans. I don’t wear it for squats or deads because it gets in the way.

The belt IS uncomfortable, but that’s what you are paying for. Stability is uncomfortable, because it means extra pressure, which is a GOOD thing.

Awesome, thanks. I’ll get 13mm and pass on the soft belt until I need one.
What would be an example of a decent soft belt?
