No problem, really enjoy Israetels on podcasts, I think he’s a great communicator.
Have you ever thought of “carbing up” before a work out as a one off, to see if it has any effects on performance?
Don’t have to think about it: I’ve done it before, haha. It definitely DOES affect performance of the workout, and it’s why I employ them for competitions, but I don’t see a need to do that for training. Along with that, the energy from carbing up tends to shut down pretty quick UNLESS it’s paired with a fat to slow down digestion. When I go quick carbs, I’m good for the first big lift and then I fade away. When I stick with fats, I tend to keep a sustainable energy level through the workout.

Sorry couldn’t help myself. Nice PR too.
I was curious. Auto-correct was OK with it, so I assumed it was good.
Hey man, I know I’ve seen you explain conditioning vs cardio and how they are different before using very few words and it made a lot of sense… could you do that again for me? Yes, I know this is random. I just can’t find where you said it.
Check out my blog “mythicalstrength” and the phrase “cardio vs conditioning” on Google. Should set you up
Alright chums let’s do this.
AM WORKOUT (0510 wake up via spouse alarm)
Fasted 50 swings w/40kg bell
DEEP WATER INTERMEDAITE Week 1, Workout 1
Buffalo Bar Squats
10x10x350lbs
SUPERSET (hyper-abs) no rest between sets
Reverse hyper 270
5x10
Standing ab wheel
5x4
KB swings w/40kg bell
1x50
Notes: 3:45 between sets of squats. Welcome to intermediate boys. 350 is just about perfect. Maybe 5lbs under, but the last 2 sets were tough, and that tends to be my metric. Oh yeah, and the exertion headache. Getting this done in 8 sets is going to be a challenge. And let’s celebrate that I’ve added 25lbs to my 10x10 squat in 6 weeks. Things are moving great.
Will get the deads in as part of a WOD later, and then get in some sort of thruster to get some blood into my quads. Working lates the next 3 days.
I know your work schedule has always changed frequently but this just sorta made me think: how do you and your SO handle your schedule? You are often up at 3am to train, often work evenings/nights, seem to keep a reasonable bedtime for yourself, etc. (You’ve also stated that you just plain don’t sleep as much as one might think they’d need to.) Is it ever tough to find time to spend together or not really? I know you’ve mentioned going on runs and date nights and everything.
(If this is too personal of a question I can delete the post.)
No worries dude: happy to discuss.
The “secret” is just this
I get up at 0300 on my early shifts so that I have the evenings to spend with my family, vs coming home from work and then training. I go to sleep when my wife does on those days, which is around 2100-2200, so I’m getting 5-6 hours of sleep. With my wife teleworking 3 days a week now, it also makes it that I can be in physical proximity to her when I have downtime, even if she’s working. When I work lates, I race home from work so I can see my wife and do the swap off with the kiddo, then immediately train after I drop my kid off so I can get about 5-6 hours of sleep in the afternoon and be awake when my wife gets home (typically I’ll have dinner made at that point too). That way we can spend the afternoon together before I go to work. I’ll typically grab a 20-30 minute power nap before work on those days. When I work middle shift, if my wife is at work I’ll visit her during her lunch break, but if she’s at home we’ll just hang out together until I leave.
I never had an energy drink in high school, during my undergrad or while working on my masters, but once I had a kid I became a fan, haha.
Your physical feats are impressive but I personally find your “make it work- no excuses” attitude far more impressive .
Especially in regards to nutrition. I can’t imagine eating that volume of food all the time
@anna_5588 Much appreciated. “Get to yes” was one of the best lessons I ever got, from that same mentor that gifted me the makers mark.
@rroo Man, I don’t want to imagine it anymore, haha. Just gotta get through these next 6ish weeks.
First, completely forgot to post that I got my next belt in Tang Soo Do last night, so that’s cool. My background keeps slipping through. We did breakfalls last night and I “got it” on the first try. I got asked if I played sports in high school and reported (truthfully) that I wrestled.
“Oh that explains it”
Yup. It sure does…
AM WORKOUT II
Touch and Go deadlifts 308lbs (140kg)-chins-dips

Time: 6:28
Notes: Upping the weight on the WOD now. Not world ending, but solid none the less.
I wrestled with the philosophy of belting my whole career and always went back and forth on it, but regardless: it’s still a success. Nice job, amigo.
With your sporadic sleep times, do you find you have a hard time getting to sleep/staying asleep? Or are you able to sleep on demand? I have a predictable sleep schedule (about 10:00 to 6:00), but when I travel and get out of whack I always struggle to return to a “normal” sleeping routine.
Thanks for that. There’s no trick, just your “get to yes” method.
Me and my SO’s schedules are pretty opposing right now - we’re doing fine and making it work, I’m just always curious to hear other’s approaches and perspectives. It’s a little weird right now too - I have school and we both just have multiple part time jobs for various reasons. Once we settle more into a “career” type of job I imagine there will probably be slightly less variety, or at least it will be easier to anticipate the schedule changes.
I had my first Monster during a long overnight drive last summer. I’m pretty sure I asked for your input on here before buying, haha. Since then I’ve had…maybe one every other month. The first two or so times I tried it I felt like “Hey I feel more awake” and since then I stopped feeling anything from them. Going off of 3 hours of sleep right now and I’m drinking one purely for the taste since it has no effect on my energy levels. I have only ever had the purple Monster. I’ve refrained from trying any other flavor or brand, as knowing me, if I found something I really liked, I’d buy it more often, haha.
A fine choice
Ultra Violet, I assume?
I’ve tried most Ultras ( I used to have a 1 a day habit) and Ultra Violet is my favourite by a mile.
What’s the Ultra even stand for? Ultra flavor?
I actually hate carbonation. Pop, sparkling water, Ultra Violet Monsters…I can’t stand it in anything. So part of me likes drinking these, part of me hates it, haha. I gotta take small sips, and like I said, it’s about every 8-10 weeks that it happens.
