Rebirth of the Juggernaut: Brute Force and Ignorance (Part 1)

Hey man. Quick question if you don’t mind. I’ve noticed since going very low carb that I actually feel better and have a much more consistent energy level throughout the day. I’m trying to figure out what some of your go to fat sources were for you when you were losing weight and bringing your health markers down for you doc. I scrolled up to late last year but couldn’t find what I was looking for.

Edit: just found your 5/3/1 review thread and it has a lot of what I wanted to know

This is probably a bi-monthly treat on average.

I eat plenty of treats. I would guess that the gut bacteria could change with the addition of veggies but not the complete removal of junk. Who knows? The human body is too complex for me to understand.

@wanna_be So that’s the thing: I pretty much eliminated ALL dietary fat when I did that. Doc told me to cut out red meat and watch saturated fats, and I took that way too far and was basically living off lean protein and veggies. It’s why my current dietary habits are so fat oriented: fairly certain I crashed my hormones. I eventually settled on a serving of mixed nuts once a day (as in, 1/4 cup) and then anything that came with fish. I was also taking fish oil, but that’s about it.

Definitely not what I recommend. The stuff you see in that review thread is definitely better. Were I to lose fat, I’d reduce some of those fats that I’ve added, but focus on keeping the monos high and have SOME sort of saturated fats.

@Frank_C Weird indeed. I know that when I go clean for a long time, fast food tears me up. I remember my first Jack in The Box experience after 3 months of clean eating. It was unique. John Meadows discusses a similar Baconator experience, haha.

AM WORKOUT (0430 natural wake up, 0730 workout)

10 mile race with Mrs

Time: 1:32:29

PM WORKOUT (1530)

30 GHRs
10 neck bridges each way

4 rounds of
Chins: 14,3x12
Standing ab wheel: 4x5
Dips: 14, 3x12 (25 band pushdowns on final set)
BW reverse hyper: 4x10

50 band pull aparts

Notes: Run felt awesome today. Coming into it recovered and having it be the first workout of the day went a long way. Breakfast was a chicken breast patty, egg whites, fat free cheese and half an avocado in a crepinni egg wrap burrito with a slice of subutter toast and some nuts n more on celery, then a Finibar and Birthday Cake Bang an hour before the run. Perfect fuel: stomach wasn’t upset and I felt energized but light. Wasn’t running at a breakneck pace: something comfy that I could chat with the Mrs with. Just a solid day. Definitely had a half in me.

Got the daily work in. Also got the whole family signed up for Tang Soo Do now. I will, unfortunately, miss the very first lesson due to work, and that will be a trend, but still good to have a family activity.

If I remember right he actually ended up in the hospital and required surgery after that lol

Nah, not from the Baconator. His words were “I sh*t everywhere”. This was already post surgery, so he had no colon

AM WORKOUT (0520 Wake up via dog) FASTED

30 GHRs
10 neck bridges each way

MEAT EATER II from Tactical Barbell

10 rounds of
20 1 hand KB swings (alternate each swing)
10 burpees
1 min rest

Time: 19:49

20 chins
15 dips

Notes: Right hip was bugging me from the race, so instead of my traditional 100 burpees I got them in with Meat Eater. Had something of a tonic effect. I was taking this at a leisurely pace, but still got my heart rate up pretty decent. Got Easter Brunch buffet inbound, and I feel like that may be the fuel I need to start BtM on Monday.

Got my schedule figured out so I can start Tang Soo Do on Wed. Sweet.

The birthday cake bang is one of the most horrendous things I’ve ever tasted lol

Meat Eater

Has ever a conditioning session been named in the honour of our glorious brother of steel, Sir Pwn of T-Nationshire

Keep it going my man, keep it going

You have a very enviable life then, haha. The older folks here can tell you horror stories of “vanilla flavored” supplements and first gen protein bars, eh @bulldog9899

I tried a Chinese knockoff chocolate protein powder that tasted like cocoa powder flavoured detergent once

I used a “chocolate” flavored beef isolate protein that tasted like shredded beef jerky.

Ahh, I have fond memories of Carnivore. Everyone one the high school wrestling team would pound 2 scoops pre and post practice in order to chase the previous gains, because obviously meat would make you stronger than whey, because science

…needless to say, the locker room stalls probably violated some UN convention gaha

Mine wasn’t even Carnivore: some malt 'o meal-esque knock off I got from a supplement store in an outlet mall. So not worth it, haha.

PM WORKOUT (1400)

Prowler
2 lengths w/180 loaded (2 minutes rest between)
2 half lengths w/90 loaded (1 minute rest between)

Notes: Weather was good and school was closed so I used the local school parking lot for some pushes. No idea on distance, but this is what it looks like

And it felt like hell. Needed some breaks on the way down. Way back was better, but still took some breaks. Good to find some limits.

This workout followed my first legit cheat meal in quite a while. Went out for Easter Brunch. Going from memory I had

3 slices of prime rib
1 slice of ham
5 strips of real bacon (no turkey)
2.5 sausage links (kid didn’t eat half of theirs)
Scrambled eggs
A made to order omelette with every veggie imaginable plus ham
2 pieces of bass
2 pieces of chicken in some sort of sauce
Crab louie
Lots of veggies
4 deviled eggs
A few bites of banana/strawberry bread pudding and oreo poundcake
And an oatmeal chocolate chip cookie

Felt good to “revist” my old self like that. Had the ability to eat more, but knew the reasonable call was to cut it at that point. A little bit of gut distress later and I was good for the prowler.

I used to try my dads EAS protein bars when I was a kid in the purple and silver wrapper and it was really disgusting, and so were the shakes. I’m sure before that they were even worse

Oh man, those were a trip. I had a “Price Club” protein bar, back before they became Costco, packed in my lunch every day of high school, and I remember finding “good” flavors and being so excited. And then there were Met-RX bars, which are somehow still in existence.

I just looked at the calculations for my day 1 of BtM, saw the squat weight, said “f**k” and then “game on”, so I guess I’m ready, haha.

These are my all time favorites. The old school chocolate chip cookie dough Big 100! I was saddened to see they recently changed the recipe, and it now has a thin chocolatey coating and just is no match for the original.

Helluva cheat meal, dude. Also, that prowler stretch looks MISERABLE - I would HAVE to keep my head down. We ran a lot of 3 mile stretches for our PFT’s and the ones with turns/laps made it easy - we had one one time with just a 1.5 mile straight road, there and back, and no matter how long you ran, the turnaround point/finish lines just never got closer. It would break me to keep looking at that distance with 180# on it.

@antiquity I remember liking them the few times I had them, but I feel like they operated under the premise of “if you throw a bunch of tasty stuff into a protein bar, no one will taste the protein”, haha. It’s why they always clocked in at like 500 calories.

@flappinit Thanks dude! Totally true. Head down, then you come up for air, go “F**K” and keep going. …not all that cool to do at an elementary school…on Easter.

Haha that cheat meal read like the hungry Caterpillar (you’re a dad so I’m expecting you to have this memorised verbatim) then you finished with this:
