That’s EXACTLY why I tell all the teenagers that come on here talking about they’re going to eat chicken and broccoli 6x a day they’re crazy. You don’t get to turn 40 and then decide to eat cheeseburgers and pizza. Do it while it won’t kill you!
I’m all about false promises to myself. Right now, at work, I have a quest bar in my backpack. It’s been there for months. I tell myself “If I’m ever so hungry I can’t stand it, I’ll eat that quest bar”. It’s most likely completely crushed/melted/destroyed at this point, but that false promise has kept me from going to the snackbar and eating Fritos (only 3 ingredients: corn, corn oil and salt, they’re the best “triage” snack).
One of those false promises I’m making is that, when I turn 60, I’m going to let myself just get horrendously fat. Just eat all the things I’ve denied myself and let the chips fall where they may.
I’m most likely not going to do that, but promising it to myself seems to keep me from having meltdowns.
Haha. I think that’s the value of the promise of the “cheat day” too - it makes the denial not seem permanent
Actually woke up when the Mrs alarm went off at 0550 this morning. I WAS awake at 0415 when one of the dogs started spinning up, but I was able to doze off and on after that. Significant win. Changed up the morning routine a bit. Had breakfast, then did the following circuit
5 rounds
10 chins
4 standing ab wheel
10 KB swings
Done in 5:28. I REALLY like this approach to get all the work in for a relatively short amount of time. I may add 1 more rep to the ab wheel and possibly 2 to the swings. Chins were a different grip each time.
Hit 35 pull aparts and 25 press downs, took the dogs for a weighted vest walk, came back and did 30 GHRs. Supposed to run with the Mrs later today, but also got some landscappers coming out that may require my attention, so we’ll see.
I drunk purchased the vertical diet book recently and didn’t regret it the next day. Seems very well researched and put together.
@boyce79 Appreciate the nod dude. I don’t tend to struggle in the way dudes on the vertical diet do regarding eating to gain and bloating. Stan is a smart dude for sure. I feel like I know what I need to do as far as nutrition goes: execution just needs to be consistent. I have to remember to balance health and performance. In much the same way I used to only look at carbs, I have to start considering sources too.
LUNCHTIME WORKOUT
5 mile run
Grippers (dropset)
6 forced closes with the 2.5
6 forced closes with the 2
8 reps with the 1
11 with the trainer with a 20 second hold at the end
Notes: Running was the absolute last thing I wanted to do today, but it was good for me to get out and do it. Seemed to help loosen the body up, and though we moved slow, I didn’t feel winded at the time. Race is coming up, and I’m just going to gut it out at this point. It became a low training priority once all this health stuff cropped up, but I still appreciate the experience.
The mountaindog approach is pretty damn simple to follow from what I’ve read. There’s not much to it besides common sense type stuff. It’s not like he’s pushing any crazy approach just try to eat good foods and limit processed crap.
The simplicity definitely appeals to me, but more than that, it’s the specific foods that are not only included but MANDATED. Grass fed beef, grass fed butter and whole eggs. I’ve always performed well eating those things, but my health markers improved when I removed them from my diet. However, I was eating grain fed stuff and going for cheap prices: I’m curious if I can find that balance I want between performance and health by employing that method.
I don’t know how much grass fed beef matters, but organic/no chemical seems to. I eat whole eggs, but I like the hormone free ones not the mass produced ones with no colour in the yolk. It tends to cost a little more, but it’s cheaper than a pharmacy bill or illness. Less processed = more better for me. I had high cholesterol, now I have 160-170 cholesterol.
I like the dude and I think his approach makes sense, but he did recently have a heart attack.
That may be due to drug history, his specific disease history, genetics, etc., but worth mentioning.
It’s actually something already mentioned in the log, haha
From what has been discussed, it was unrelated to plaque build up, which is where my conern lies.
@hardartery Went in a similar way. Currently at a total of 155, down from 286. Took the LDL from 200 to 66, while seeing some improvements in HDL and trigylcerides as well, but was on a statin at the time, so now trying to do it med free.
Regarding grassfed, this is what’s leading me down that path (from John Meadows elitefts article on the subject)
" I cannot recommend “normal” store bought grain fed beef as these cows have been fed grain, and grain feeding depletes all of the things in the fat that make it healthy and magical – namely a perfect balance of Omega 3 to Omega 6 fats, and CLA (Conjugated Linoleic Acid). The unhealthy Omega 3 to 6 ratio that is heavily skewed toward Omega 6 is very inflammatory to your body, and is thought to increase chances of heart disease and overall bodily inflammation. The PH of the rumen is heavily affected by grain, greatly increasing acidity, thus completely throwing off Omega 3, CLA, and other levels.
In case you are wondering what exactly happens to the cow fed their unnatural diet, (external website) states “when fed an unnatural diet of grain, acidosis can result and lead to a condition called “rumenitis,” which is an inflammation of the wall of the rumen. Rumenitis then leads to liver abscesses as the rumen wall becomes ulcerated, bacteria are able to pass through the walls and enter the bloodstream. Ultimately, the bacteria are transported to the liver where they cause abscesses. From 15 to 30 percent of feedlot cattle have liver abscesses, hence the need for antibiotics and such.” Not pretty."
It’s worth the experiment for me, if nothing else.
I’m definitely interested in your results
I grew up on “Organic” beef. Because there were 6 kids and it was the only way my Dad could afford to feed us. He was a contractor, and we used to go to the farm auction and buy a cow every summer/fall. It would go to my Grandfather’s or a friend with acreage and get fed a blend of grain and corn and a few other things like molasses for a month or two and then go to the slaughter house. It was the cheapest way to fill the freezer for the year.
Later I get married and move away and I’m eating the stuff from the grocery store, mass produced stuff. It was the 90’s and “Organic” wasn’t a thing yet. My numbers tanked. Suddenly I have high cholesterol (260-280) and I’m gaining weight like crazy. the cows still ate grass the whole time they were eating the blend, and it was only for a month or two, so maybe that makes a big difference. I know we pay what we have to pay to get the less processed stuff and a lot of numbers got better. Now I have to get serious about the diet for a while and get less fat.
Yeah, this gets into the whole “grass fed vs grass finished” discussion as well. It’s all pretty fascinating. Or at least it’s what I tell myself, haha.
0430 Wake Up (got up on my own, dog was a little rascally, figured it was good enough)
50-ish minute walk w/45lb weighted vest
Breakfast
5 round circuit of
10 chins (new grip each set)
4 standing ab wheel
10 KB swings
Time: 5:22 (6 second improvement)
Band pull aparts
35
Band pushdowns
25
AM WORKOUT (0730)
45 Minute Every Minute on the Minute workout
Odd minute: 3 reps of front squats with 185lbs
Even minute: 3 reps of SSB squat w/255lbs
GHR
1x30
Notes: Sleep continues to improve. I could have dozed again, but honestly wanted to get the walk in with the dogs while it was still early and cool. Did some fasted walking today, stealing from DoggCrapp. That circuit continues to be a great way to get in my daily work.
Props to @oldbeancam for the EMOM idea. It was an awesome workout: good split between conditioning and building. Allows me to get in my front squat and SSB work too. Definitely wanna keep that going. 30 minutes was the original goal, and 45 was the stretch. Had a little more in me, but with it being a first exposure and deadlifts coming up next workout, wanted to wait and see on it.
Making today a moderate carb day. Haven’t done that before. Feel like this is the kind of workout that supports that sort of day.
Decided to put an end to my impromptu weight loss phase by making some very anabolic breakfast sandwiches this morning. Bacon, egg, and pepper jack on a pumpkin spice bagel. I figured if anyone would be into this combo it’d be you haha. They were delicious. I spent a good period of time hating on pumpkin stuff because I think pumpkin spice coffee is an abomination and that’s been like 99% of my exposure to it, but I’m discovering that as a solid food it’s legit.
@mr.v3lv3t My love for it can be traced to thanksgiving. My mom would make an amazing Pumpkin bread as a side, and I’d eat about the whole loaf, haha. I’m sure it was super anabolic. Glad you’re giving it a chance.
0430 Wake-up (Dog got me up, but I was pretty awake at that point)
50-ish minute weighted vest walk w/45lbs w/dogs (going just a little further every time)

4 standing ab wheel
10 KB swings
35 band pull aparts
25 band pushdowns
35 GHRs

3x315+chains
1x405+chains
6+3+3x495+chains
3 minute rest
4+2x495+chains

Pulldown 130 w/d-rings
7x10
Pull apart
7x10
Neck harness 55
7x10
Pulldown stripset

7x120
6x110
7x90
DB power cleans 10s
1x100
Reverse hypers
50xBodyweight
50x50lbs
Notes: Morning stuff is pretty typical. For the PM workout, I came into it knowing deadlifts were a bad idea. Hips are pissed at me. I was able to gut out the main work, but once that was done, my right hip/glute wasn’t speaking with me any more and I had some numbness going down the leg, so I went with some easier work. Plan was a circuit of 10 rounds, but I got a phone call after the 7th round that just threw the whole thing off, so I went with stripsets, brought in a classic with DB power cleans and finished off with the reverse hypers just to get the blood flowing.
Tomorrow, I’ll hit up the daily stuff maybe and then just call it. I’m definitely due a day of rest.
Also, got myself something nice for my birthmonth

Rocking my tnation shirt
Nice truck mate, good to see you looking jacked but more importantly looking genuinely happy. Good on ya Pwn.
Nice! I’ve driven Honda’s my whole life. The medical transport company I used to coordinate for had 6 cars - 5 2010 Honda Fits and 1 Ford Focus. 3/6 of the Hondas were over 400,000 miles and the Ford shit the bed at 150K. I also have a long term goal of getting a truck for myself, but it’s 5 years off, hah.
Also, I feel like it’s hard to use this word without sounding like a douchey frat bro, but you look diesel, bro ![]()
