Rebirth of the Juggernaut: Brute Force and Ignorance (Part 1)

@simo74 Much appreciated dude. And fantastic timing on the competition. Great to see you stepping up.

@wanna_be I’ve taken first in a handful of comps at the local level already and qualified for nationals a few times. But right now I’m just enjoying the results of my training too much to change it in pursuit of competition performance. The one in April should already suit my strengths pretty well, and won’t take much modification to put finishing touches on, but if I see a comp and it’s got events I don’t care for, I either won’t do the comp or I’ll do the comp and just not train for the event in particular. I’m too old to be doing stuff I don’t like, haha.

@tlgains Thanks dude. I’ve been told on a few occasions that I could be put on a recruiting poster, haha.

@caesium32 Thanks man. That cheering section is first rate for sure, haha. First time in a comp I could actually hear them too. Apparently that strategy works.

Great report here of a really great experience. Keep it up.

Thanks man!

Any desire to try nationals?

Lotta variables at play. Gotta qualify at first, haha. Then work schedule has to facilitate. And then they gotta hold it somewhere I wanna travel to. Far too often the juice isn’t worth the squeeze.

Maybe all the stars will align. I would safely expect that to be the most viewed write up on T-nation. At least until activitiesguy finally gets his 700.

Amazing work at the comp mate! You can tell you went all in with the effort. Watching you hit those reps on deads is always a motivational experience.

@dagill2 I feel like it’d be a letdown with how I’m approaching the training, haha. But maybe I could strict press the press event weight and call it a day.

@jpmason1985 Thanks dude! Appreciate it. Effort is all I can bring, haha.

LATE AM WORKOUT

SUPERSET (Press-pulldown)

Axle strict press
5xAxle
5x66
5x146
5x166
12x191

Lat pulldown 110lbs
5x10

GIANT SETS (Press-dips-raises-pull aparts. Sets 1 and 4 axle strict press, 2 and 5 barbell behind the neck press, 3 and 6 log clean once and strict press away)

Axle strict press 161
1x10
1x7

Barbell behind the neck press 125
1x10
1x7

Log clean and press away 150
1x10
1x7

Dips
6xFailure

DB lateral raises 30
2x12
4x11

Band pull aparts
6x12

DB curls 15lbs
1x100

Notes: 2:00 between giant sets. For the curls, I took to leaning back against my axle in the rack as a semi-incline curl. Just helped keep technique a little strict so I could get blood flowing into the biceps.

12 was the goal for that topset on presses, so happy to hit that. I walked the TM back 2 cycles to give me a little breathing room post comp, which should allow me to keep growing leading into the next comp. Cut out the backoff set for today because it woulda been the same weight as the press supplemental set and that seemed silly.

Gonna open up the mad science lab on this one: plan for the supplemental work is 3 press movements. Axle strict press will be a mainstay. After that, I’ll have 1 week where I use behind the neck press and log, and another week where I do trap bar press from the rack and keg clean and press. Behind the neck press has been a great addition to the training and paid off a ton in this last comp, but now I need to get better at pressing a weight far out in front of me, so the log should carry over well to that while still being a pretty generic press overhead, while the keg will have direct carryover to the competition. Once I get the Bartos loadable keg, it will be especially easy to program. The trap bar press will get me more practice at neutral grip pressing while getting me a very full ROM similar to the axle and behind the neck pressing. I’m thinking that more angles are just going to get me stronger all over.

First time touching a log since Jul of '18. That first set was ROUGH, balance was all over, but I got better come the second go around.

Still pretty beat up. I need to run, but my left knee is swollen. Gonna try it tomorrow.

Especially since you aren’t as keen on competing anymore. Beautiful time to build up strength all around. Also, loved the “Daddy” chants. Really amped me up.

Those chants were amazing, haha. Probably helped me channel my inner Glenn Ross.

I’m really digging the “strength all around” I’ve discovered with adding in the BtN presses. I think it had some pretty radical physique changes on the shoulder girdle too. Definitely filled out more along there. Thinking some more angles will only continue to help.

Really wanna get my back to what it was before. Balancing act with all the implement work and keeping the elbows happy.

Now there is a name that lots won’t know but it sure as hell made me smile. Who’s the daddy ?!

For sure, that takes me way back.

Glenngary, Glen Ross.

Who’s got the good leads?

@simo74 and @dagill2 Ya’ll are just making me feel old now, haha. Gotta celebrate the classics.

@The_Myth Protein shakes are for closers, haha.

Forgot to document this, but noticed today that my left hip isn’t bothering me anymore. This is legit why I tend to ignore injuries, as they tend to eventually just go away if you stop paying attention to them.

If you are feeling old. I must be archaic!!

Us kids call this ghosting, although it usually applies to annoying “love” interests

@simo74 It’s not the age but the mileage. And I keep getting replacement parts and recalls, haha.

@j4gga2 I’ve been ghosting my body for years now at this point, haha.

AM WORKOUT

TREADMILL RUN

Incline: 1
Speed: 6.4 mph (9:23 mile)
Distance: 8 miles
Time: 1hr 15 minutes

Notes: Started experiencing a minor allergic reaction to something I ate at about the 4 mile mark. Made it tough to breathe. Suppose that means no Taco Bell breakfast quesadillas pre-run. Been eating a lot of junk just to get the calories up with the training. Aside from that though, this went better than I anticipated so soon after the comp. It still sucks, I don’t like doing it, but I’m better at it. It’s more the mind than anything else at this point, because my heart and lungs are holding out well and my body doesn’t break down much on it. Left achilles played nice, right foot didn’t go numb for too long, and my stride is improving.

Going to try to squat in the evening today. I have plans on throwing in high rep work on the backoff set later in the training cycle, but today is going to be a bit more traditional while I gear up for the race.

Isn’t that just a cheaper and tastier version of those ridiculous masks some crossfitters wear?

When’s the race?

If it made it hard to take in air, that’d be cool, but instead it’s more like my lungs can’t fully inflate because of some swelling. Never feels good.

Race is on the 27th. Not too long now.

Ok, so when I run, my legs get heavy in a hurry. I also breathe very heavily. I suck. But when you say your lungs and body hold up, do you mean you’re just struggling with this because you’re bored?
