My first XC practice as a chubby 14 year old I had to run 8 miles. I found the key - run very, very slowly. Some may call it a walk, but they just don’t know what they’re talking about.
Also forgot to mention your latest blog post man. Really resonates with some of the other reading I’m doing at the minute. Specifically that the people I admire most (Dan John, Bruce Dickinson, etc.) All have one thing in common, and that’s the instinct to overcome obstacles. And I say instinct because it seems instinctive for them to find ways around whatever gets in their way. It doesn’t seem to be a question of mental or testicular fortitude, it’s literally hardwired into them. If there was one thing I want to teach my babies, that would be it.
I think you’re describing engineers.
I shared a flat with 6 engineers for 2 years at uni. I’m definitely not describing engineers.
@simo74 Thanks man. It was funny, she commented “You’re in pretty good shape to be able to just go for a run like this with me”, and I said “I think I’m in pretty bad shape, and that I just have a good pain tolerance”, followed by a pause and then me saying “but thanks”, haha.
@TX_iron Furthest I’ve ever run was 8 miles, and that was MANY years and 50lbs ago, haha. Still, I have a similar hope: if I can get to the point where it’s just about getting 1 foot in front of the other, I should be ok.
@jshaving I’m all for that! It seems I can’t stop, or else I’ll die…
@dagill2 Glad you dug that post dude. I had a blast writing it. Definitely been peculating in my head for a while. And teaching that to a kid is frustrating to say the least. My wife is the same as me, and our kid will give up when things get tough, and they’re a kid and it makes sense, but both of us have no empathy for it, haha. We’re all learning each other.

Notes: 3:45 between heavy pulls, 2:00 between giant sets. Went without straps up to and including the 515 set. I was NOT feeling like I had any heavy pulls in me today. Perhaps it was the run yesterday, or that I had been averaging 5 hours of broken sleep all week this week, but either way every set from 515 on felt HEAVY. Somehow, I just kept finding more in me when I dipped in for it, but after that 705 set I was fairly confident I had used it all up, so I went back for 605 to see what I could do. I could feel myself not getting my hips down on a few, but it’s good to know I have that strength from different angles.
Still focusing on keeping my foot placement on the trap bar similar to the foot placement I would use on a conventional deadlift. I had to focus on bringing the feet back together on the 605 set, because they kept wanting to come out.
Giant sets were rough. Front squats are finally at just about the right weight.
The last couple of reps on those 605’s I thought that was the last. But you kept going. Refusing to stop.
Very much in the line of your latest blot, which I enjoyed.
Looking forward to a recap of that ½ marathon, I can’t see you pussy out now you’ve mentioned it… You’d refuse to quit now.
Do you get much carry-over from the trap bar to your conventional pulls?
So just the 2 PRs then?
Do you leave the lights off so you don’t see the crazy weights you’re lifting?
Good work man, as always.
Being big and strong when running is like having a straight flush while playing Go Fish, hah.
The only thing that brought me under the 2 hour mark, was pairing with a buddy who is about my build and does them pretty frequently. I figured as long as I could keep up with him, I’d post a somewhat respectable time and not have to think about it much.
The half marathon world record got broken in Copenhagen this weekend, it is now 58:01. I rekon if you double that you are still doing well.
Holy shit.
@mortdk Appreciate it dude. They were definitely a trial. Quitting isn’t the issue now: it’s figuring out what to do with the kiddo. Got no family nearby. May have to see if I can get a friend to watch them while the wife and I run.
@jpmason1985 This is my third time using one in a decade, so I really couldn’t say. My primary reason for using it is just to get variation in a max effort movement, and to overload my body to get it used to heavier weight.
@dagill2 2 HARD PRs, haha. Definitely not one of those days where everything felt light. And that’s actually all the lights on in the garage. It’s just dark.
@TX_iron I am totally stealing that analogy! That’s a great one, haha. Sub 2 hours would be amazing, but right now goal would just be completion.
@simo74 Right now goal is just maintaining a mortality rate of 0%, haha.

AM WORKOUT PART II
Treadmill run
Incline: 1
Speed: 6.3
Distance: 6.55 miles
Time: 1hr 3 minutes
Notes: Ok, big training day here. For the presses, went 3:45 between heavy presses and 2:00 between giant sets. Hit this workout after waking up and walking my kid to school. Working nights this week, so learning how to use my downtime. Found myself running out of gas through the workout, so I’m gonna need to focus on getting in some decent calories quickly. Left bicep is still really achy, despite taking a break from events yesterday, so I’m cutting the direct bicep work down for now. Balance. Was an otherwise productive session.
Took off 30 minutes and ran half a half marathon, so I suppose that’s a quarter marathon. Picked a speed that set a 9:30 mile pace. Not fast by any means, but sustainable for now, especially with the incline set. I definitely wanted to stop at mile 2, but pushing through that got me in a better place. I’d have parts within later miles where I felt good, and then it would suck again. Still, wanted to see if I had halfway in me before I gave this some serious thought.
I know there are probably better and smarter ways to balance this training, but I’m just gonna experiment and see what works for me and my schedule.
Developed a small hotspot on my foot. Will need to watch for that. Gotta get the calories in too. Treadmill said I burned 1000 of them. Not sure if that’s real.
Andrew Clayton posted about you on his facebook. Pretty cool stuff ![]()
Holy cow! I have made it, haha.
Hold up, how old is he?? I’ve been following him on IG for a while now and always thought he was in his thirties, but that “watching YouTube videos after school” like has me fuckked up.
Pretty sure he is 26.
I know it’s post-surgery and whatnot, but that pic really shows how much size Pwn has put on since the start of this log.
This is SO FREAKING AMAZING ![]()
