Rebirth of the Juggernaut: Brute Force and Ignorance (Part 1)

Lol poor kid. I know what me mean about the greasy food. Sounds like it was a once off and hopefully you’ll stay well away from the threshold for the rest of deep water.

@simo74 Totally dude. Hopefully, if I feel like I’m going to puke, it’s for the right reasons, haha.

PM WORKOUT

Stone over steel over bar (20) w/50lbs loaded
15 reps in 9:15

Notes: With this being an off season, I’m going to vary my approach a little. I’m going to either get more reps done in this amount of time or get 15 done in less time. Want to hammer my back without pushing too close to the edge, and I think this will do it.

DEEP WATER DAY 2

AM WORKOUT

NG chins
1x21
2x12
1x10

Bent over rows 205
4x10

Clean pulls 205
3x10

Reverse hyper 320
3x10

Notes: 4 minutes rest between sets for everything except the reverse hypers, where were about 2 minutes due to time. This is very different from how I’m used to training, but it’s also forcing me out of my comfort zone with movements, as I hate bent over rows and never do any type of clean or pull. Still getting a feel for the movements and appropriate weights. First 2 sets of clean pulls were pretty awful, but got a better idea of what I was doing by the end. Slipped my knee sleeves down over my shin to stop the bleeding from hitting the bar so much.

Did chins in a very strict full ROM style. Chest to bar for as many reps as possible, then chin over bar after that.

Still owe the ab work. Will get it in later today. Once the rest times are shorter, it’ll be easier.

Loved the write up brother. Very interesting and a fun read from start to finish.

Appreciate you sending the idea my way Dude. It’s one of those stories that a lotta people never believe, so it’s nice to get it out there. I can only imagine what woulda happened if I recorded it for the internet back then. All the form gurus and programming experts woulda exploded, haha.

Not to mention, you would have had nowhere to hide the obvious juicy jawline, making you even less trustworthy.

@oldbeancam The internet will never cease to be an amazing source of entertainment, haha.

Just wanted to document I did the ab work yesterday. 1 minute plank to 20 sit ups back to start for 3 rounds with no rest. Did the first plank with my kid on my back, so extra 45lbs or so. They then did 2 sit ups, said “Dad, this is hard” and left me alone to do the rest of the work. Sometimes I wonder if we really have the same genes.

With the exception of those rare people who enjoy pain or don’t respond to it I think we all have to learn how to deal with discomfort.

It is honestly one of the things I struggle with the most, not just with my kid, but people in general. I’ve lost all empathy there, because I lost that part of myself a long while back. Been great for training, not so great for interpersonal comm, haha.

I think I have a strange personality in regards to suffering. If I plan my own misery through training then I’m fine with it and don’t think twice. If someone else plans it then I get anxiety and I want to quit.

Back in my fifth year of college when I played basketball I skipped a pre-season workout because I hated having someone else in charge of my training. This was after I became a CSCS and finished my Exercise Science degree. I’d learned how to train each energy system and what the work:rest intervals should be. The school didn’t even have a strength & conditioning coach so we were at the mercy of our assistant coach.

I went and ran on my own in the morning and probably worked harder that the team session but it was on my terms so it was fine.

Hey man, a few weeks back I had asked you about the “Complete Sandbag Training Guide” that comes with the Ironmind sand bags. Mine came in yesterday so I took a minute to flip through the book. Aside from a couple neat conditioning workouts, there’s not much helpful info for anyone beyond a rank beginner. If you do happen to stumble across it, I’d suggest skipping right to the sample workouts, or putting it back onto the bookshelf haha.

@Frank_C I dealt with somewhat similar frustration back when I was doing combat sports. I’d sign up for a 2 hour class, think I was getting 2 hours of instruction, and find out we’d spend the first 30-45 minutes just doing calisthenics as a “warm up”. I’d get cheesed off because I was working out on my own time, and the whole reason I came to the class was to learn how to fight, not get a workout, but then, looking at some of the other folks there, I realized that THIS was the only physical activity they got, and the coach was trying to get them into good enough shape to even LEARN how to be able to fight. It’s what sucks about group training environments. Can’t tailor it, and usually have to reduce to lowest common denominator.

@theonecamko Don’t knock it, haha. Pickles are always a decent low calorie filler.

@mr.v3lv3t Good to know. I eventually got burnt out reading about training after a while, and I only return to my core classics when I get the urge, which is primarily just Powerlifting Basics Texas Style, The Complete Keys to Progress and Super Squats.

Fried pickles are my life blood, man. Combined with that chipotle ranch dressing, I dont think its very low calorie haha.

Man, if I eat any fried food I feel sick for the rest of the day, haha. Lost my ability to do that at around 24.

In hindsight, I don’t understand why I stressed about it. I was usually first or second in all of the timed sprints. I should have just slowed down and kept pace with the slowest guy. If one person didn’t make it then we all ran again.

This does remind me of a pretty funny story. I worked with Mike Tuchscherer for a while, who I’ll say is a great dude, really funny, amazing human and, of course, immensely big and strong. He was an Air Force academy grad, and was talking with another buddy of his that was on the football team at the academy. He said “Yeah, our coach would do a drill where they’d punt a football, and whoever brought it back to the coach didn’t need to do sprints for the rest of practice, as clearly they were fast enough.”

Mike was about 6’2 and 260lbs, and already a national champion powerlifter in the USAPL at this point, en route to being a world champ one day. He ponders the situation and says “I think I would just hang out by the coach and then, when the guy comes back with the ball, I’d tell him ‘give me the f**king football!’ and then give it to the coach.”

Gotta appreciate the outside the box thinking, haha.

The sad thing about that story is that a college coach confused being fast with being in good shape. Another great example of a coach not really understanding the human body and physiology.

Eh, I imagine it was more just a team building thing. Something to be said about training aggression and competitiveness among a bunch of college age knuckleheads. I’m sure there was a fair amount of scrambling and roughing around to get at the ball.
