Funnily enough, I was a Kid Rock fan growing up. Haven’t really followed the new stuff, but Devil Without a Cause still makes rotations in my training mix, and I appreciated a lot of the Polyfuse method.
I’ll be training later today, but biggest announcement is that they upped the Men’s Lightweight cut off to 200lbs, so I’ll be dropping a weight class to go compete in that. This means my static strength is now WAY higher than it needs to be and my conditioning is probably poor, so I’ll be working reps for the next few weeks and also no longer eating like a fat kid.
No one survived 1998 without getting that album, haha. Crazy how that was 20 years ago.
PM Workout
Buffalo Bar squats 275lbs
1x12
8x11
Notes: That’s 100 reps in 9 sets. It sucks even more than it looks. Rest sub 2 minutes for the first 5 sets, then sub 3 for the next 2, then sub 4 for the last 2. Lower back was the limfact; major pumps. Took my kid to the water park on Saturday and found out that 200lbs of bodyweight goes down water slides VERY fast, and landed on my foot at the bottom of the slide, jacked up my healing knee and bang up my wrist, and amazingly these squats seemed to even that all out, so that’s cool.
Woke up at 199.6. Going to slowly phase things out of the diet so I can enjoy myself while traveling for my competition and not worry about weight. After that is a cruise in august where I want to be lean, and then, if they ever announce nationals and it seems like it’s within my grasp, eating for that.
I was born in 93 and knew every word of those songs in the 2000s. He was my childhood. Hell, we put on that album closing down the restaurant I work at the other week. It’s a classic.
I went in LOOKING for grip shirts, haha. They’ll run $6 t-shirt clearance sales, and I’ll look through the racks to see what I can find that has a big screen print image on it.
Last time I got a SWEET Iron Maiden black and white leopard print tanktop that I’ve been using for my log work. You can kind of make it out in this video
And since I own like 27 different Punisher t-shirts, Hot Topic tends to have a supply of those as well.
Ahhhh, yes. I forgot about the graphic t-shirt collection. When I hear Hot Topic my brain instantly pulls up images of Marilyn Manson and his followers.
This is genius. What size did you order? I’m assuming you would want one fairly tight for stones. I’m going to be playing with my stones more this summer and was actually looking at the grip shirts the other day when I got an email about a sale, but this is much more up my alley.
I did a quick scan and it doesn’t look like the exact shirt is still for sale, but I’ll start poking around this hot topic site for something similar.
Thanks for posting, I’m all for saving a buck or 54.
I got a large, but if I was super hardcore about making it a competition sticky shirt, I’d get a medium. Basically 1 size down from what you wear day to day.
And yeah, the big print shirt is the old school solution to grip shirts, haha. Hit up Walmarts and stuff. I knew guys that used a big Cartman t-shirt for a similar effect.
Apparently the company “Lifters of Iron and Stone” (or Stone and Iron, I forget which order) make decent grip shirts for $30. They don’t have the bubbles, but just an aggressive and gritty screen print. Seems like a good compromise.

Notes: Now that the contest weight has been lowered, I care slightly more about my push press, and I’ve switched out the heavy strict press single for more chances to push press comp weight. It’s still garbage, but I’m remembering cues. Cleans were super slow. Significant contributor is that I STILL have a gnarly log hickey on my stomach, and I know I’m intentionally slowing down the clean to keep from pinching it again. Biggest thing is I need to approach the log with “speed” on my mind, similar to a moving event.
Woke up at 199.4. Making small dietary changes to ensure I don’t have to worry about making weight.
I know you mentioned the shifting of weight classes but have you posted what the events/weights are for the competition and/or what differences the weight class shift made? I’m curious.
265 log clean and press away
Truck deadlift
200-220-280 keg/sandbag/hussafel stone carry in 90 seconds
Things thrown over a 16’ bar
Stone series ending at 360lbs
Now it is
225 log clean and press away
Car deadlift
180-200-250 medley (same implements)
Lighter things thrown over 16’ bar
Stone series ending in 310lbs
I’ll be competing against 5 other guys rather than 6 as a result of the weight class shift, and guys much closer to me in weight. Realistically, if those guys were all super hardcore 175 athletes, they most likely walk around at the same weight I walk around at, whereas, if I was competing in the 231s, it would be against guys that walk around at about 250.
Still not light by any means, but I see what you mean about having to shift focus towards speed/reps over pure static strength as with the original weights.
I took a look back to a few stone workouts of yours and see your height was measured by the pin location, but for those of us trying to copy your every move, what approximate height are you trying to train for?
I have a stack of wooden pallets and just wondering how tall I should make the pile for my stone lifts. I played with them at 44" a couple weeks ago, but looking around the net it seems like 50"+ is the norm.
I legitimately have no idea, but for common competition heights, 52" for mens and 48" for women is about standard. In my case, I picked the pin height where I could consistently get the stone over the bar without it rolling down my torso due to it’s slickness. The 20 hole is also the hole I rack the j-hooks on for when I want to press overhead, so it’s nearing my chest height.
And yeah, my focus has shifted from “survive” to “thrive” in the 2 weeks I have left to train. I think I have a good show in me.
