BJJ - Grappling Industries Comp
03.11.2024 (3.00 - 4.30pm)
Was a little nervous on making weight - woke up Sunday am and I was sitting at 65kg (on basic scales at home) so all good. Decided to drive to town to weigh in early, kiddo was still asleep at the time. Hit 144lb (65.3kg) - given they had a 1lb allowance (so 166 upper) things were all good!
Then I could carb up, plenty of fluids and treat the day like normal. The timeslots are always shifting (as matches finish early all matches - so things slide earlier and earlier…)
Our group was due to start around 3.30pm.
Got to the venue around 2.15pm and watched some matches. The plan was to warm up when they called us all to the mat to check in. Managed a quick 30sec roll with H just a few movements, then some light stretching in prep. Actually had more time than I realised as there was one more match before we started but I guess the refs’ want everyone there ready.
Match 1
Came in cautious, certainly noticing that a lot of matches start off with a heap of grappling. I was just looking for that leg takedown. Not sure what his plan was with the occasional head tap, he was tall too.
Cue first effort on takedown driving him off the mat. Within seconds of the restart I took him down again and had side control. Reset back on the mat. Then he’s locked me into ‘something’ not pleasant. At one stage pressure was building and sound changing in my right ear, but didn’t want to give up. I know now to get the loose arm in against his throat next time. Alas fought through this, got to mount, trying to get arm triangle then some leg entanglement. But still in a good position on top.
He’s turned the table slightly but I have one leg covered, then he’s ontop, but I have the ankle. Into single leg x (great coaching by my team on the side). Get the leg x, get the sweep! Fluff around on getting a better ankle grip then it’s all over, straighten and turn the head. Got him to tap, and my first ankle lock submission EVER (never get it right in training!), pumped.
Won - submission (ankle lock)
(video below)
Match 2
Another takedown early (46 year old vs 16year old), right near edge of mat. I remember having my other arm out to protect his head as we were perilously close to the wooden floor (edge of mat! - protective dad measures??? haha). Reset in middle with him in closed guard. Defended this well for what seemed like ages… but in no time he had me in a triangle and an armbar. I held on for probably too long but had to tap.
Lost - submission (armbar)
(video)
Match 3
Another young lad, I got another takedown early but before I knew it he had my right arm locked between his legs and had me in a crucifex. Man I fought this for a while - but not knowing what the hell to do made it tough. He had the choking arm around my chin/mouth = good as it wasn’t on my exposed neck, but not realising (at the time) I needed to get that arm free he basically had 2x arms vs 1x of my arms, eventually it slipped down to the throat for a hard deep choke. Again I held out but should have tapped sooner. Struggled to speak after that, bruised the trachea a bit…
(no vid! - I think the coach hit photo not video)
Lost - submission (crucifix/choke)
Match 4
Dominated this match. Both my coaches were nowhere to be seen! Again no video, but I had another early leg shot takedown. 2points. Side control (3points?). Mount (4points), then kept sliding up his body as he never got his arms down. I knew his was in massive trouble already early. Just kept my weight on him, got the arm up and locked around neck arm and just worked the grip to get tighter. Locked in and squeezed. Tap and another win. Fk yes! I think my coach made it by the end, but it was all over by then and he was really impressed. (we had multiple athletes on multiple mats all day)
(no vid!)
Won - submission (arm triangle - around arm/neck)
-still pumped after the comp, loved it. Great people there.
-woke up this am, elbow is pretty sore. Throat improving (doesn’t hurt to swallow today phew).
-so glad I put the effort in to drop some weight, the next group obviously bigger but being at the top end of this weight category paid dividends for sure.
-lots of guys keen to grapple, I’d rather be rolling around looking for points!
tl:dr
Won 2, lost 2, 5th of 9th. Great day and plenty learnt!
