R.E.M vs U2 Best 80's Rock Band?

Both R.E.M. and U2 were great bands, both amazingly artistic, and both unique. I like R.E.M. more, just because U2 fell off harder. But both bands had a slew of amazing, consistent albums, and both bands had amazing songwriting talent.

EVH revolutionized (literally) the guitar, but his songs were very hit-or-miss–most songs were just generic crap. The art of writing an actual song kind of missed him.

W.A.S.P. is my favourite guitar band of the 80’s. Tipper Gore created the ‘tipper sticker’ because she heard her and Al’s kid listening to “Fuck Like A Beast”.

Soft rock/ AOR the title goes to either Marillion or Whitesnake.

REM and U2 aren’t rock in my opinion.

No wailing = No rock

U@ was awesome in the 80’s. They fell apart in the 90’s.

R.E.M. sux!

Finally, something worth discussing in this thread. “Get a Life” was great. I still laugh when I think about the spelling bee episode where he always had trouble spelling the word “pants.” Or him versus the Paperboy 2000. Ahh, they don’t make sitcoms like that anymore.

What a stupid fucking question. They’re both a bunch of fags.

did the guy named BADASS MENTALITY really suggest that either of the two least badass bands ever would be the best rock bands of the 80’s?

REM had their moments, but U2 is essentially the blueprint for musical mediocrity.
the guys who said husker du and the minutemen were far more right. basically anything on SST records is good answer, and if you’re into things that are more agressive, I’d say Metallica and GNR take the cake (despite their pathetic spirals into whatever they are now…).

as for me, it’s a tossup between hall and oates and black flag.

then define rock. And Van Halen was good in the 70’s. By the 80’s they had jumped the shark. Panama!—come on.[/quote]

I don’t think anyone would call Metallica a “rock” band. And VH only released 2 albums in the 70s, VH1 in 78 and VH2 in 79. They may have jumped shark, but they were on top of the world during the 80s. If not Van Halen than Motley Crue or Duran Duran. R.E.M really didn’t hit the peak of their popularity until the early 90s.

Joshua Tree (U2) best album of 80s. Automatic For The People was incredible album too (REM). But U2 gets overall win.

Then of course there’s my personal favorite, the band I consider the most overlooked/undernoticed band of the 80s-90s – Faith No More.

I only saw maybe 2 episodes back in the day, but I laughed my ass off.

By the way, Christmas is just around the corner…

I’d have to say AC/DC but I’d be more likely to pick any other band than REM and U2.

This thread has to be satire.

No love for G N’R? That’s my pick.

popular and good are two completely diffewrent things. None of their albums compared to the first. Even the second was a dropoff.

Metallica was still the best
AC/DC second

Why do I know–because I can go for 50 minutes on the treadmill listening to either. 25 minutes without.

OK, someone give me an explaination of “jumped the shark”, as I’ve never heard of it before this thread.

I know “jumped the couch” refers to Tom Cruise going nuts and jumping over the couch on Oprah, and marks a point where someone went crazy, but “shark” I am drawing a blank on.

Someone please enlighten me.

Yep. GnR, Metallica, Def Leppard, Poison, Duran Duran are all amongst the best of 80s rock.

Of the two though, I’d go with REM. Never really liked U2s music.

Besides U2 are a bunch of assholes with Bono being King Dick.

Agreed. Two of the better bands from that era were Husker Du and the Minutemen.

They both suck head.

Showing my love for Bono. Time Magazines person of the Year

Neither of those bands are anywhere near my top 20.
