wait a sec I just noticed the Topic was changed… I was asking specifically for muslim members to respond but… It appears a moderator didn’t like my title and changed it.
And just as a note…

this kind of attitude is partly what gives us “Muslims” a bad rep.

The hell is your crazy elf ass talking about? What part of that post can be seen negatively?

Did you convert so you can play the sympathy card, a la the dentist from seinfeld with the jokes, ??

I had titled the thread “A question for our Muslim brothers about Halal”, but a mod went and changed it on me, which was followed by obvious non-muslims who weren’t sure what they were talking about give random answers. I wasn’t trying to offend, just saying I had asked for a point of view from a Muslim, not just telling me to “Man up and ask him”.

The meaning was kind of lost when the thread name got changed.

I do have/have had several Muslim friends. One of my good friends growing up was Muslim, but we would mess with him all the time, like once on a cottage trip we cooked breakfast and the smell of bacon was driving him nuts, finally he couldn’t take it anymore and had a couple of slices, and we all laughed. Another one of my friends from Africa is muslim, but pretty much only eats pork “when nobody is looking”. But these friends were born and raised in America, its a whole different story when you are talking about someone who grew up in a Muslim state with near 95% muslim population.

I actually told the above story to another Muslim friend of mine and he was furious, not only mad at my friends but it seemed that he was mad at me for telling the story. I know people can be sensitive so I don’t exactly want to meet this guy at the station and offend him.

I can read brah

What, you’ve never been to a foreign country and someone has asked you a blatantly rude question, but you’ve remained civil because you realise that other people just have different cultural standards of what is polite and impolite?

I think it’s far worse to ignore the fact that he eats halal and try to get away with it than just acknowledging that, indeed, he eats differently than you do. And then asking him. Just be like “Hey I’m ignorant. What do you want to eat?”. Or make a joke about American food or some shit.
Yes. When I first arrived in China I had a few Chinese people say things like “So George Bush, what a moron/idiot/loser/tyrant/ect”. I was offended. I didn’t even like bush myself, but I felt offended that someone from another country would just make a comment about another country without thinking that maybe I support him. The second day in China a guy eating beside me struck up conversation and his third question after ‘where you from’ and ‘what are you doing here in china’ was ‘how much do you make’. I was offended. I thought it was rude, but later learned its not so taboo to ask how much someone makes here. I was uneducated about these things, and after dude asked me that, I stopped talking to him. Had he asked on a forum before hand “is it rude to ask a white guy how much he makes?” and had a real answer from a white guy, he would have saved that embarasment and maybe today we would have been friends.

I might have told you to man up, but do not presume that I am not a Muslim, either.

Plan your trip with him around going to non-food places. Then when it’s time to eat, ask what he feels like eating. He will likely tell you at that point if he cares about Halal or not. If he does care he’ll make a point to mention it, I mean you aren’t exactly in a muslim country.

Skank, Halal isn’t a type of cooking its what is being cooked. Just feed him sea food or poultry its the easiest thing to ensure its halal
Beef has to be slaughtered. When I used to live in VA Walmart sold halal beef, just ask the butcher.

CHeers
Don’t worry he’s a muslim not an alien he eats normal food…

That will be Mr.Elf to you.

and sir, the lack of kindness towards posters he felt were non-Muslims.

But yes, I missed the fact that he is not Muslim.

So yes, I are no sense. :frowning:

I’m on edge because of the book burning thing that will go down on the 11th. That shit has me worried.

Seafood really? I thought some of that was off the menu as well. My ex wouldn’t shellfish, since you can’t drain them of blood. Fish was fine though.

Really? That’s odd.

My wife’s entire family indulges on shellfish, calamari, fish , etc.

I have a friend coming over to visit me, we used to work together and the cafeteria we ate at was Halal, never really went eating outside that, but anyways yeh I haven’t seen him in a long time and he’s never been to this city so I was planning on giving him the grand tour of my favorite restaraunts here and what not… then after I had planned Brazillian BBQ, Greek food, ect… I realized… Halal. Which kinda throws a wrench in the plans. I don’t want to insult him, I know he is religious and probably won’t be willing to eat non-halal food.

Is it rude if I ask him if non-halal is ok? if he says he must eat halal, what type of places should I look for? Can he eat non-meat dishes that aren’t halal?

From a muslim point of view, if I just plan to eat at a bunch of middle eastern restaraunts, will he be insulted? Kind of like if I went to Egypt, I wouldn’t want my host to take me to mcdonalds, burgerking and kfc.
You say he’s your friend, then TALK to him; it’s not rude.

Anything that comes from the sea is permissible. Any beef/chicken is permissible provided it is slaughtered by muslims, jews, or christians. Non-meat dishes are also permissible so long as nothing haram was used in cooking it (wine, for example).

If there is doubt as to where the meat came from then it is better to avoid it. Remember, if you know it’s from muslims, christians, or jews then it is allowed.

That’s wrong. Poultry is not an exception. It also has to be slaughtered/come from a muslim, christian, or jew.

I recommend for your Halal friend that you take him out to a roach coach out off some highway and get him a snoot sandwich and a craft beer, if not home-brewed.

There’s no shortage of Halal food in HK. Don’t know what your price range is, but head down to Tsim Sha Tsui. Fucking everything restaurant that has a turbaned dude in it is Halal, along with many that don’t.

Also saw a couple in Mong Kok and I think one in Ma Ohn Shaa, but that could also have a lot to do with the fact that I spent a lot of time there, rather than their ubiquity.

Sorry I can’t answer your question directly.

When you mean “this city” I assume you mean HK?

Anyway yes, you should ask him if he can eat non-halal. He’s a grown man I assume. It’s not like you’re asking him something offensive.

If going Halal is a big deal then you should check each restaurant. I dare say HK will have very few Halal restaurants. I live in Singapore and that’s not the case because over 15% population here are Malays who are invariably Muslim.

I completely don’t get the Egypt fast food reference. Mind explaining that?

Thanks for the advices and funny comments.

He called me today kind of off guard and said he will be in town tomorow. I told him I knew a really good Muslim place here in town and he said sounds good. I then said ‘well… unless you want to try some western food…’ which he responded that he must go to halal restaurants only.

… OR KFC. lol. Serious.

So i figure one night xinjiang food, next night Extra Crispy 3 piece.

Oh… so you asked him anyway? Wow. You took my non-Muslim-brother advice then.

lol

Wait did he stick it in your pooper yet? What kind of Sammich you gonna make him?
