just curious if chocolate milk is a good choice pwo. How much would some one recommend to drink? would there be a difference between powdered (or liquid syrop) and that 1L carton of milk?
I’m partial to considering powdered chocolate milk mix and add that to my whole milk. I’m annoyed by the 1% cartons.
Well… it isn’t optimal… but it’s better then nothing… you should try and get some Surge Recovery, or perhaps whey/malto and water… have that after instead…
I just remember reading in a few places that chocolate milk had similar nutritional properties as other pwo shakes, and that it isn’t a bad alternative.

You read correctly. Chocolate milk is a good PWO drink. It may not be as sexy as Surge but it’s got everything somoene needs as far as PWO nutrition goes.

Well the word ‘bad’ is somewhat subjective… kinda like asking:
How long is a piece of string?
Will it help? Sure… is it optimal… no… so if you are comfortable with mediocre/‘ok’ results… then do it up!
You forgot to quote Thibs on that one[/quote]
Touché… that was originally quoted by Thibs…
Well you’re using whey protein… which is a supplement… correct?? That’s what I mean… whey protein powder and quick isn’t too too bad… chocolate milk on it’s own… not so much…
Honestly I don’t think it matters all that much. As long as you have all your other nutrition dialed in, and are in a caloric surplus, I really don’t think you’ll notice a difference.
I use Surge on and off. I like the taste of it, but haven’t noticed a difference vs a whole food meal, which is what I’ve been doing lately.
Hopefully Biotest can have another 2 for 1 sale so I can stock up.
yea the fast carbs is what i’m thinking about as pwo. i mean, Nesquik is basically simple sugars.
as for the whey protein, i think it’s to do with the fast actin nature of whey itself. milk is 80% caesin iirc. and if you drink it with whole milk, my understanding is that the fat slows the digestion (which is apparently the opposite of what you want in a PWO shake.)
so whey + simple carbs. skim milk + chocolate milk powder + whey protein would (In theory) provide what you need, pretty cheap.
not to bash Surge or anything like that. i never used Surge, nor at this time can I afford to buy it. but, even the package itself says it contains milk products. just saying.
if my understanding is correct (feel free to correct it if wrong), pwo you want fast carbs and fast acting protein. so as much as I don’t like low fat milk, skim is probably an optimal choice (perhaps instant), combined with chocolate milk powder and whey protein powder.
also, you could substitute chocolate flavor for something like strawberry flavor. I think it’d work fine, since it’s just a taste thing, and I happen to have strawberry whey protein.

In that case, seeing as I have a pretty strong chocolate flavour whey anyways, would I just mix the whey with water and glucose powder(dextrose monohydrate-VERY fast insulin spike) for an ideal PWO shake…?(followed by whey)
as opposed to what it has in it that makes it optimal like Jareth127 asked, my main question is what everyone thinks “proper” post workout shakes and mixes have that make Them so optimal and so much better than the rest
if i buy hundreds of dollars worth of suppliments to get the very fastest carbs and hydrolyzed whey and all that shit post work out…why is that SOooooo much better than if i buy myself a 2 litre container of juice and a bunch of regular protein powder, or pasturized eggwhites or whatever pre/mid/post workout …i dont even see why a point second of a difference in digestion time is so important if you’re sipping it through your whole fucking workout and just finishing it afterwards anyways
Surge is much better. While chocolate milk looks just as good on paper, I am less sore, recover quicker, and progress faster when I have Surge on hand.
There was a thread where Bill Roberts talked about the differences between lactose and the sugars in Surge and their absorption qualities as well as the differences between whey and hydrolyzed whey. Search around for it if you want.
