Why are Americans so insecure that they cannot allow us to be proud of our own country?
I really can’t understand how people can be so insecure.
shrug
Must be low on testosterone.

You guys keep insulting americans and then when we say anything back you act like we are insecure.
Not only have you just assumed that shammy is insecure because he said america is better than canada but then you went on to make it sound like all americans are insecure and we must have low testosterone.
You assume alot of things and insult people as a country based on your asumption of one person.

That seems so odd to me, since the victory of the War of 1812 spawned the “Star Spangled Banner” as a testament to the US defeating the British. Doesn’t sound like a loss to me - let’s check the record: yes, the Treat of Ghent.
The UK abandoned plans to develop their proxy alliance with Indians, stopped impressment on American sailors, and effectively ended the British’s desires to gain control in American territories. A loss for America? Not exactly.

You also intended to impose “manifest destiny” upon us to “free” us from our terrible, terrible, tea-taxing British oppressors. Against our will, mind you. You failed in that regard. A loss for Canada? Not exactly.
Thanks for the attempted “liberation” guys, but no thanks.

And more besides, the credit for winning in the Canadian theater goes to British regulars and Indians.[/quote]
“British” regulars and Indians who spent their entire lives living in Canada. By your logic, the Founding Fathers were British.

The initial post was a joke and ya’ll are taking it way too seriously. Sounds like insecurity to me. It’s not our fault you can’t handle it.
Btw we’ve set up a clinic for people just like you.

For sake of argument I’ll use the original post as an example of National Pride. The claim of canadian greatness was being justified by comparisons of canadian and american products, with canadian products being superior. It then outlines past military conquests Canada has over the U.S. as further examples of superiority to its southern neighbor.
My reaction was more than likely one that the majority of Americans reading this thread shared. That reaction being rolling of the eyes and saying “yeah yeah, whatever. Have a Happy Canada Day.” And of course the reactions of more argumentative american members have already been noted, and argued some more.
If people from other countries want americans to stop puffing their chests out and being all “american” about national pride, stop trying to put americans and the U.S. down to make themselves prouder about their country.

A couple of notes.
Did I ever say it was a loss for Canada? The War of 1812 was between the US and the UK. I never mentioned Canada.
Kind of hard to pull of the “we fended off those that wanted to control us” when you were the subjects of your overmaster, the British monarchy. Canadians at that period weren’t the rugged, independent type -they were the work-monkeys of the their masters in powdered wigs across the pond.
No one buys the whole “American expansion into Canada” theory - annexation was not a war goal, just part of the tactic of waging war. There was no “Manifest Destiny” goal of the War of 1812 - that is per the readable history.

They were right up until they decided they weren’t. Canadians weren’t independent.
Seriously, you accuse others of having an “inferiority comples” when you can’t resist fabricating history to try and make Canada look better. Canada has plenty to be proud of, why invent a mythology that makes you look desperate?
Being a musician I was wondering, how’s the music scene up there? What contributions have you guys made to music in the 20 century. I know about America’s and England’s musical contribution to the world, but is there anything thats come outa Canada thats influenced modern music? I have a lot pride in my country’s musical contributions to the world Jazz, Blues, R&B, rock n roll, metal, country, blue grass, surf, alternative, electronic, modern classical, movie soundtracks just to name a few. Happy Canada day you hosers Peace.

Some that have come from Canada, should never have been heard, such as Celine Dion, Bryan Adams. But we also have put forth some talented bands, such as The guess who, tragicly hip, and nickleback in their early days. There have been plenty more, but at this point of the day and number of beer, the mind has slowed down

Ouch. However, I think I’ll pass as I believe that my American man-boobies are within the average range.
I love Canada, but I also love making fun of Canada. And besides, so many Canadians are just so nice. I’ll probably spend this evening watching ‘Canadian Bacon’ with some of my Canadian buddies and maybe telling some Canada jokes. But I’m sure that eventually well all just find common ground in making fun of France (just kidding)

Thank you, but I’ve taken offense to some of the America bashing thats gone on here. Although, I have to admit that our some of our pop culture gives other countries ammo to bash us with.
I believe national pride should come from things like “how’s my country positively contributed to the world” “positive aspects of the people’s personality and culture” “beauty of the land” and “successfulness of government (Cambodia would do so good here)”
I’ve never been to Canada but from what I can see Ontario looks pretty good so far LOL. I’ve met some great people from Canada, although one of my close friends was just in Quebec and he told me the people there were despicable. I guess they really hate us Americans. What gives Quebec? Did he just have a bad experience?

Because everyone knows that America is the best at everything, always. They have the best everything, all the best inventions are in America, all the best people are in America.
Therefore, America = The Best.
[/sarcasm]
I’ll tell you the real reason. A big ass ego. Arrogance.
