Philip Rivers may have deserved his selection if he had played in the NFC, but not the AFC. Tom Brady and Steve McNair are more deserving. Defensively, my only complaint is that Troy Polamalu had a terrible season. He’s been banged up since week 1, and he’s been out the past three weeks.
In the NFC, it’s even worse. Tony Romo should not be a Pro Bowler. If you’re going to let someone in for only playing half a season, then it should be Donovan McNabb. Marc Bulger has played horribly the past two months, and the Rams are now nearly out of the playoff race. Isn’t Michael Vick in the midst of the wild card race? Isn’t he primed to rush for over 1000 yards this year? I thought so.
Gotts disagree regarding Rivers vs. Brady and McNair, especially McNair. McNair’s been good, but his numbers are average. Other than a couple late game drives, he hasn’t been that remarkable.
Agianst Brady, Rivers has a higher rating, fewer interceptions, better completion percentage, and more wins. Brady only has him by 4 TD’s, but you’ll have to excuse Rivers, he has a record-setting running back on his team.
I would have liked to see Lee Evans get in, but I don’t know who you take out.
In the NFC, either McNabb or Romo, doesn’t bother me. Statistically, they’re about equal. I guess I’d go with Romo, because he took a talented team that was sinking and righted the ship.
Westbrook should definitely be on there though.
As a side note, I haven’t watched the Pro Bowl in over 10 years.
The one that bugs me (and yes, I am a biased Cowboys fan) is T.O. not being selected. Anquan Boldin? Are you kidding me? T.O. leads the league in touchdown receptions and has just as many yards on a very good team… and they pick Anquan Boldin?
And don’t get me started on Terrance Newman being snubbed. It’s hard to get a lot of interceptions when they almost never throw your way…
I don’t think Rivers should have made it either. Brady should definitely be in there. Look at the players that Rivers has around him and look at the players that Brady has around him. Brady has done the same or more with lesser players.
Cripes, I could manage a winning record with LT running the ball and throwing the ball to Gates. They are the two best players at their position.
Brady has to throw to who? Exactly!
And as far as NFC QBs go, who cares who gets in. Besides Brees, I don’t think any of them deserve a Pro Bowl spot. They all have had mediocre years at best.
The worst nomination would have to go to John Lynch. How the fuk does that happen? The guy has 48 tackles this year, no turnovers and has played every game. I wonder who he is sleeping with to get the Pro Bowl nod.
I don’t care if this is Tiki Barber’s last year or not, he shouldn’t get in over Westbrook. Tiki has what, 2 TDs this season? Wow, good work Tiki. Westbrook is more valuable to his team and should be in Hawaii.
And one more thing, how does a player who got suspended for four games because of steroids, make it into the Pro Bowl? I know that Merriman has had a great year but any player who is suspended for breaking league policy shouldn’t be allowed in the Pro Bowl. But that’s just my opinion.

This is the only one I don’t completely agree with. I believe Tiki is something like 5th in the league rushing this year, which counts for a lot. He’s gotten pulled from games a lot in short yardage situations for the bigger back they have, so he can’t help it if his TDs are so low.
Rivers without a doubt should be in the Pro Bowl. With the exception of both Kansas City games (the most recent win and the early loss), Rivers has been a pleasure to watch. The only reason the Chargers lost to Baltimore is because Marty didn’t let Rivers take over the game in the 4th Quarter. In all the Chargers games I’ve watched this season Rivers has been outstanding in the 4th quarter. And If you don’t believe me check out his situational stats in the 4th quarter.
Rivers has shown the his critics he could take over for Drew Brees and be successful, therefore he should be in the Pro-Bowl.

You do have a valid point. Tiki is 4th in the NFL with 1357 yards rushing. While Westbrook is 11th with 1092 yards.
I guess I just look at where each team would be without them. And I think the Giants would be about the same. While the Iggles would be worse.

Looking at the stats of Brady and Rivers, it really doesn’t matter which one should be there. Statics wise atleast. Their numbers are nearly identical.
However, I still say that Brady has done more with less.
And besides, you’re Canadian. Shouldn’t you be watching Ricky Williams and the Argonauts? haha, just kidding.

Yeah but he showed his youth against KC on sunday, making poor decisions and showing his lack of mobility under a steady outside rush.
San Diegos’ having a special year, for sure, glad to see as many Chargers nominated for the bowl.

It’s amazing that California has the best team in the league and the worst team in the league!

Other than the TD’s, they’re stats are almost identical. Of course Boldin is going to get the nod over T.O., Boldin’s not busy attempting suicide and spitting in players’ faces. Why would people reward that type of behavior?
I missed Lynch getting in. While I agree that Lynch isn’t Pro Bowl caliber anymore, there have been a lot of injuries at safety this year in the AFC, so who else do you put there? Polamalu was also undeserving, he’s having a mediocre season and has been banged up since week 1, but again I don’t know who else you put in at that spot.
As far as Zach Thomas/Al Davis over Lewis/Scott: I think you’re just being a homer. Zach Thomas is the anchor for a very good Miami D and leads the NFL in tackles. And isn’t Bart Scott an OLB?

I agree with you about Zach Thomas, he’s been a consistent LB for a long time, Spielman incarnate only less fragile.

And Thomas is 33. He’s only missed 13 games since '96, playing at an extremely high wear and tear position, and making over 125 tackles every year except 2000 due to missing 5 games. At this rate he could go 4 or 5 more years. Though I doubt he’ll do much walking when he’s 50. But, I guess that’s the trade-off.

Yeah, not unlike Dan Hampton. But look at Mike Singeltary patrolling the sidelines for the 'Niners and he seems to be doing ok.

I am Charger fan so below is obviously biased. (Except the numbers, which are factual.)
It doesn’t matter who a qb has to throw to. Should Montana not have gone because he was throwing to Rice? Brady finished 10th overall and 2nd in quarterbacks in fan voting. Rivers finished 3rd in qbs. The coaches and players thought Rivers played better this season and the numbers prove it. Brady has 2946 total yard, Rivers 67 yards less, but Brady needed 47 more attempts to do it. Rivers has a better rating, less INTs, and more yards per attempt.
Merriman paid the price by being suspended for 4 games. He has had another phenomenal season despite being suspended. The league decides the penalties for violating league policies and it does not include disqualification from the pro bowl.

I forgot about Rivers leading the comeback against the Bungles. I guess I’m guilty of going with a players’ rep instead of their performance. Point conceded, he’s worthy.
I fully agree with you about Merriman. He served his suspension and is still tied for second in the NFL with 12.5 sacks. That’s impressive.
